LG V40 ThinQ

Well it appears LG will release a V40 in September. After trying a G7 I liked it, but was hoping for a little more like an OLED display and a slightly bigger battery. Anyhow the firmware was leaked and it gives more information about this phone. I had a G3 and G4 which I liked, but after LG "jumped the shark" on the G5 I left them for Samsung. The G6, V30 (V35), and G7 have been a good start trying to get them back in the game, but they aren't quite there yet. The V40 might be the one that brings me back. We'll see. I love supporting and purchasing from an underdog if they offer a competitive product.

I'm actually excited to try this out as I liked the V30 and my G7 was actually quite great. It may take a lot to pry this OnePlus 6 out of my hands, though

I don't understand why they would put a Notch on a V series phone though.

If I am not mistaken the Vseries is for Video and Media, which the previous V phones did very well, but now how will you enjoy the full glory of the POLED if it has a notch? Would be terrible if you have to force it to reduce the video screen size to make the notch disappear.

The LG V30 Design was damn near perfection, in Function, Looks and Ergonomics.

It appears the data sheet for the V40 has leaked. Highlights are 5 total cameras (3 on the back 2 on the front), stereo boombox speakers with quad DAC, a notched (for better or worse) 6.4" P-OLED display, Snapdragon 845 with 6 GB of RAM, 64 or 128 GB of internal memory, 3300 mAh battery.

No word on release date yet, but there are some people suggesting we could see it in October.

LG phones tend to have great battery life compared to their competition.

Hopefully that’s the case this time around but so far whenever I’ve watched those battery drain comparisons, I don’t see the lg phones winning them either. The aren’t last, but definitely not first either

Those tests aren't good for real world usage though. It doesn't take into account how good the standby times are on them. Like the iPhone, has great standby times, but it dies first. But I can go days if I use the phone very little. However, if I use a Samsung device very little normally it drains pretty good in standby too.

The LG phones have much better standby than Samsungs I have used.

It'd only be an issue if you like watching videos cropped whilst they're in full screen right?

I'm sure you're aware, the notch doesn't prevent you from watching videos at their Original Aspect Ratio. It'd be the same thing on a phone with bezels - if the screen resolution doesn't match the OAR, then you'd need to reduce the video size anyway.

I might be the only person who pre-ordered one of these, but anyhow I received it yesterday. I went with the Verizon Moroccan Blue version. I have to say the color is beautiful and I really like the finish they put on the glass. It sort of is a "grippy" or "brushed" glass for lack of a better term. The black one was just regular shiny glass so I decided to try the blue.

I am coming from an S8+ so I'll try to let you know how I like it after a few days. I tried a G7, but I just couldn't get past going back to an LCD screen after having an S8+ with the AMOLED. I'm happy to report the V40 has an excellent screen compared to past LG OLED screens. So far I'm liking it, but I have not had a lot of time to really mess around with all the features especially the 3 cameras.

awesome! aside from the screen tech, how does it compare to the G7? Is the software any more refined or "cleaner" (aka less LG-y?). I assume haptics and other things that were great on the G7 are similarly great on the V40.

Software is similar, however the overall phone feels more refined then the G7. I should also add that I saved $200 in bill credits over 24 months if you purchase it with monthly payments on Verizon. That makes it a much better deal.

The LG 2nd year guarantee is also a nice piece of mind as well. I suppose they had to offer it after the boot loop problems years ago.

T-Mobile employees can get the V40 for $349 with the employee purchase program. First time I've seen this. I'm guessing LG isn't selling very many phones.

I figured that considering the $200 discount and $200 or so value in freebies I received with the phone, but honestly so far this is a great phone. The display is every bit as good as the one on my S8. People either love or hate the LG UI, but I find it to be a much lighter and faster (no stuttering) skin than the Samsung phones. I also like the fact that LG pretty much sticks with Google apps and Google Assistant instead of duplicating everything. Why have Bixby and Google Assistant both running and using system resources when I use the Google Assistant most of the time anyway?

I haven't taken a lot of pictures yet, but the triple camera set-up seems to offer a lot of capability.

You have never compared it to a new LG phone. Trust me, LG will beat the Note 8 easily with battery life.
