You let them get their way and watch them fall flat on their faces when they are clearly out of their depth and don't have the required experience to back up the grandiose claims. Or someone complains about it and they get called out by someone higher up (because said person didn't listen in the first place).

It's a huge waste of time and effort and really impedes productivity.

What you’ve said there is playing politics to an extent. I have a knack of pointing out projects that are going to fail and offering solutions, they often get ignored, they fail, and then I inherit the project. I’m lucky in that very few in my company are capable of doing my job and I’ve been promoted and had salary increases to keep me whenever I’ve handed my notice in.

Where I work certain people are very good at suggesting ideas that you came up with!
We don’t have a good working environment at all. Lots of people who really are nasty pieces of work.

Oh yes I’ve had that too but I love it closing people like that if they’ve nicked one of mine. Lost count how many times that’s happened over the years lol. Yeah my employer is quite a toxic place to work too, hence why it’s impossible to stay out of the politics of the workplace when I’d rather not get involved.

I’ve seen that happen as well, but it’s not so easy to do now. Everything is documented clearly. If I have an idea for something that is needed then I’ve written the story for it and or the epics.

If someone tries to pass it off as their own I’ll call them out on it.

All of my jobs have been in the tech industry. As they required very special skills we were treated like royalty - taken to plays, Christmas parties with major stars performing, etc.

Never was boring. 50% of what you knew last year had to be replaced with new stuff from this year. Quite challenging. Locations ranged from windowless room to window office 13 stories up or an open office by a huge glass window that ripples during an earthquake.

Sadly one of the most important parts of working somewhere. If you don’t get involved in the politics you don’t get promotions or get your sway on changes, sad but true.
Unfortunately, you need to be at least aware of politics, if for nothing else just to CYA. Because often “the pieces of work” that play stupid office political games are often also adept at finding others to blame when they “fall out of the sky as a flaming wreck”.

Cover your a**

That’s an absolute must and something I always teach to junior colleagues. Important verbal conversations need to be followed up with recap emails and document any actions from meetings etc. I’ve sat in meetings where other departments have blamed mine/ or me personally for something they haven’t done and then I’ve awkwardly pulled up the conversation history to show everybody our last communication. Whether it’s sat in the boardroom or on a Teams call, watching that person go bright red and start to stutter carries quite a bit of personal satisfaction lol.
