I don't see it coming back though, since the original had it, then it went away.

Remember Firewire? It has come and gone in various incarnations on the Intel Macs. The first 15" MBP didn't have FW800 nor did it have the Dual-Layer Superdrive, both of which were present in the 15" PowerBook and have made appearances in subsequent MacBook Pros. The 13" MacBook (Aluminum) also dropped FW400, but it remained in the 13" Poly MacBook and appeared when the Alum. Macbook was moved to the Pro family.

So to say that Apple has never added back features that it has taken away would be incorrect.

I'm not sure I understand why people still treat this as an issue. People all over these boards and other places have been saying that a backlit keyboard is the ONLY thing stopping them from buying a MacBook Air right now. Is it really that much of an issue. I've never had a backlit keyboard so I guess I don't know what I'm missing but it really is just a luxury feature. Personally the screen on my MacBook is bright enough for me to find the nubs on the homerow keys. Did we stop teaching keyboarding in middle school now? If a tiny little luxury feature is all that is stopping you from buying an expensive macbook air, and none of the other features are an issue you should probably, A) stop whining about it and just buy a computer, or B) go buy a pro that has better specs than the air and is still a pretty light computer that has your precious backlit keyboard.

I feel the same way, and I have a backlit keyboard. ;)

Actually, I keep the backlight off because I don't need it when the ambient lighting is only a bit dim. I use it when it's dark, but I could easily see the keys due to the brightness of the screen when I'm sitting in a dark room.

It's a nice feature to have, but definitely not enough of an issue to change my mind about buying the computer. The 11" MBA is the best ultraportable out there, and if the lack of a backlight means you will NOT buy one, then you probably don't need it. ;)

Keyboard that glows in the dark? like green neon color? heck no..
1. Lame in the dark..
2. Enemy in the dark while watching movies..
3. Alien in the dark..

Cool?
1. Turn off all your lamp, and open your MBA.. Even it's turned off, you get yourself a lamp (GO GREEN yeah), just like a lamp that some people use while they're sleeping.

So are you backlight fans all vampires? I'd think that even with the glow of the screen you'd be able to make out where the keys are without said keys advertising themselves as little night lights.

I had an MBP with backlit keys. Felt it to be more bling than function but I also don't work in an environment that could ever necessitate a glowing keyboard.
