Likelihood of iPad shipping before scheduled?

No chance it will be delivered prior to April 3rd. They will probably ship the day or 2 before from China.
There might be two people that get it a day early but the iPad will arrive the same day it goes on sale.

I sure as hell hope they ship before the 3rd. Apple committed to deliver on the 3rd and I live in Connecticut.
Only hope is that they ship them out early and have them set on a delivery date, so that your iPad is sitting at the local depot and you can get someone to give it to you early.

Shipping dates will vary -- obviously, FedEx can't handle 300K+ in one day.

Well, in the cases of games or media, these items are usually in stores several days before the sell date and the store is the one that breaks the street date, not the shipper.
In this case, Apple will be shipping directly to the consumer. The only way it will come early is if Apple ships too early and the local distribution center doesn't hold the item (mentioned earlier). Even if this happens, it won't be a wide spread situation.
I have a friend that works for Fed-EX Ground and the only two divisions that deliver on Sat. are Home delivery (which are sub-contractors which don't always go by protocol) and Express delivery (which are actual Fed-Ex employees) so if it is sent Home Delivery which is what I believe it will be shipped I think some people might get them early, but Friday 4/2 at the earliest and that's only because the drivers want to get home early as possible on a Sat. especially since its the day before Easter, but if Apple sends them Express, which I think is highly unlikely due to cost, because they are Fed-Ex employees they have no choice but to due what management says, however typically in most cities Fed-Ex Express has more drivers/trucks/resources
Sorry, I should have been more specific. I know about places like Walmart breaking street date, I meant people who pre-ordered for home delivery (often from Amazon, as I recall), who were supposed to receive on street date but got orders a day ahead of time. I guess Apple exercises more control over the actual delivery? When does the actual handoff to the residential shipper (FedEx?) happen?
In any case--when this did happen it seemed more of a fluke than anything, so since it's essentially hoping for the shipper to screw up it doesn't seem worth getting your hopes up.
On the flip side, I've had Fedex Home Delivery show up at my door after 8pm and sometimes not at all. It's a flaky service in my experience.
Is that common in the US? Over here when I ordered Leopard and Snow Leopard, Apple sent it on the day so of course I didn't receive it until later (and since both releases were on Fridays, I didn't get them until the following Mondays).
Well, it depends on the situation. Prior to the pre-order most were speculating that we may not see the iPad until that monday. However, Apple specifically stated that the pre-orders will be delivered 4/3 as long as Saturday delivery is available in your area.
If any of those drivers delivered before Saturday, it would be last time Apple uses Fedex.
Alright, lets think back. When has Apple EVER shipped a product to people earlier than scheduled, at random?

Even if they ship before the 3rd, they will be held for delivery by FedEx per agreement with Apple until the 3rd.
Yeah, i'm pretty much expecting my on 4/3 and not a minute sooner. I think most people are excited, and we can expect similar threads in the next two weeks. I'm sure the stupid "iPad PREPARED FOR SHIPMENT?!?!?!?!?!" thread didn't help things either.
I dunno, I ordered a damn Apple VESA adaptor for my iMac. Basically a piece of metal, it was set to Home Delivery and I HAD to sign for it, therefor leaving a trail of who and exactly when I took delivery.
The day before, I received my Ergotron arm, $100+ dollars, FedEx express and they just left it at the front door.
So I'm guessing Apple could just run the tracking # and see who the delivery guy was -> shift leader -> boss <- let the chitstorm begin. (Worst case scenario of course)
