I've asked before when the handoff happens to your local delivery people (from the drop-shipment from China or whatever), and no one has answered, so I'm guessing no one knows how the final staging really works.

When I had a pre-order for my MacBook Air, it was shipped from China standard FedEx shipping and took 2 days to get to my door. There was no specific launch day for that though.

The same thing happened with my iPhone 3GS pre-order. They didn't need to hold it for launch day because they timed it properly.

Seems a bit sketchy to have it shipped direct from China and depend on a very narrow window.

I thought they might stock pile them in the US and then 'release' them to local carriers.

Do think bribery would work? Seriously, if I went up to him/her/whomever and said hey I'll give you $20 if you let me have it now... I think it would work.

It would work, no doubt about it. Not at $20 though. Start at $50's and work from there.

With the 3GS, I think I remember reading something about them building up stock at the carrier's hubs and then letting them go the day before delivery, but it wasn't for every order.
