Hi MR,

First, I am huge apple head and unlike the general consensus, I really appreciate and I am completely enjoying the new M2 iPad Pro. It is definitely more snappy, loads even faster and a much more refined product. Do not get me wrong, I really enjoyed the M1 iPad Pro, it is still a fantastic piece of tech.

The reason why I writing this is because the M2 received such poor reviews and "hate" towards the product for not having any additional revolutionary changes made to an already great product. We are basically comparing (for all the care people) a Lamborghini SV to a Lamborghini SVJ. Both great cars, they look the same, have the same engine, single clutch transmission, and the SVJ has minor changes that separates it completely from the SV, just like the M2 to the M1 iPad Pro.

Bottomline, the M2 iPad Pro is better than the M1 iPad Pro. I upgraded and I love it and I appreciate it and it is one badass iPad. For anyone that is on the fence, you will not be disappointed.

All the best.

People are mad I think mostly because they want Apple to concentrate more on software now than giving “useless” spec bumps. There’s nowhere for that power to go. The M1 is already overkill and has nothing that pushes it to its limits except maybe a few games.

If you put the M1 vs M2 iPad side by side using it like you would everyday I doubt you’re going to see much, if any, visible difference.

I think it's actually pretty likely most people upgrading from M1 to M2 will be disappointed. On the other hand, if you're the type that just needs the fastest/best tablet out there AND you know what you're getting into, then yeah ... you'll be happy!

I upgraded for M1 to M2, but wasn't disappointed, because I knew what to expect in the first place.

I see absolutely no point in upgrading my 12.9 M1 to M2 unless I wanted more storage, RAM etc (that is to correct a mistake I had made in buying the M1...)
The only reason to get a M2 for me is if it comes in a bigger size, but I think that will not come before M3....

Genshin could be the reason I upgrade. That game is so demanding I think I need 100% speed bump to play it nicely. Outside of that though, not much. M2 doesn’t offer 100% GPU performance bump, so I think the diffeence would be rather minor.

Regardless, people are mad because Apple can’t realistically take advantage of M1’s decent power (not great, btw, just that iPadOS is more limited, masking the lack of capability of M1 on more generic and random tasks). Except, Apple would easily created bloated iPadOS with some seemingly super cool features that can take advantage of M1 (stage manager for example. easily max out M1‘s performance). They are not done yet I suspect.

I think it is a misconception that M1 is too fast. It depends on the software you use and the document you use. Every time you have to wait more than 1 sec for loading, processing or exports is the same as the computer is too slow. Loading Civ IV takes minutes on the 2017 iPP and there is a long way to instant! Exporting keynote to movie takes tens of second for a short clip of a 1-2 minutes in a A12Z. If you do lots of these heavy processing the M2 will be better than the M1. If you have more mainstream usage pattern the M1 to M2 will likely be a waste of money.

The disappointment was actually that the M2 did not come with the 3nm process and that the M2 potentially used more power than the M1. The iPads are not famous for their battery life especially not if you play some heavy games like Civ VI... and by the way chip in a larger screen than 12.9 and it might be really interesting. 2024 I guess.

You can justify the purchase all you want. It’s still not worth it going from the M1 Pro to the M2.

I went from a 2018 11” iPad Pro to a new 2022 M2 11” iPad Pro, and I didn’t know what I was missing. I’ll keep it short the WiFi 6 upgrade alone was worth it. Videos stream so fast. And a 10 Core GPU. Ames Diablo Immortal play better than Diablo 3.

For those uses it probably is worth the upgrade. I bought my 12.9 M2 to replace my M1 primarily because I planned to give my wife the M1. She’s using the 2018 12.9 iPP. Plus I just wanted it. But it turned out she wasn’t interested and I wound up doing the trade in and recouped a fair amount of the cost. But with my uses the M2 does not exhibit anything the M1 didn’t, and would not be worth replacing an M1 for people like us. Also as being reported in that big smearing while scrolling thread in the iPad forum there is a significant display issue with Safari and other apps with 16.1. But to be fair that issue was also there on my M1 with 16.1 before I traded it.

Well I traded in my 4 year old highly used 2018 11” iPad Pro for $255 and walked out with a new 11” M2 iPad Pro for $550 that’s crazy.

Interesting thread. People have to go back-and-forth on why they bought this or that particular iPad, and whether is worth it, or not. The question and following arguments will never cease. For me, I don’t care what you buy, I don’t care what size you bought, I don’t care the reason you purchased it. I purchased mine because I wanted to. I personally never ask anybody if it’s worth it or not because this is a personal thing, and you may have other needs than me. We are all different. Unfortunately, some people need handholding and cannot make a decision on their own. But on social media? You’re going to get all kinds of answers. Grow up and make your own decisions. If you can find a use for it, bravo, but to go back-and-forth, and ask if it’s worth it or not to a bunch of strangers, You’re gonna hit a brick wall. Some will say yes, some will say no. Personally, I don’t give a flying hoot what other people think if it’s worth it or not. it’s my money. 🤐

Procreate, Affinity Suite (Designer, Photo, Publisher), DaVinci Resolve; five apps that are not games but can use all the horsepower the M1 & M2 SoCs can provide...?

You can justify the purchase all you want. It’s still not worth it going from the M1 Pro to the M2.

This would be true, except the thread is about the iPad Pro tablets, of which there is not a M1 Pro SoC variant...

(...with the M3 SoC, on one of the 3nm processes, maybe Apple can get a M3 Pro SoC into an iPad Pro tablet...)

The only reason to go from the M1 iPad Pro to the M2 iPad Pro would be if one is editing videos, a use case where the Media Engine (not present in the M1 SoC) would help...?

People shouldn't feel the need to justify their purchases to others. Worth/value is subjective and other people's judgement on your purchase is irrelevant.

This is great thread with a huge signal/noise ratio for me.
Does anyone know whether the cellular modem on the M2 iPad Pro is an X65 like the iPhone 14 or if it is an X60? I could not find any teardown that gave this info.
I own the iPhone 14 PM -- on yearly upgrade was an owner of 13 PM and the X65 is significantly better for weaker and more challenging signals than the X60 in the 13 PM.
I have the M1 Pro 12.9 cellular and I am thinking of upgrading, desiring 16 GB RAM instead of the 8 GB RAM I have today.

Also, if anyone is interested in purchasing "nearly new condition" M1 iPad Pro cellular, 128 GB, please let me know...
A lot of used units on eBay are without a known history.

Like what and what are the measured outcomes that lead you to this statement?

Most normal people aren't OCD enough to "measure outcomes." They use it and say "hey, this is better." They don't need to back up their purchase with a statistical analysis.

Someone who throws around the word “incredible” (where in reality it’s very much the opposite, a credible spec bump) would have to explain their conclusion a bit more in depth to be taken seriously, otherwise we’re just at poorly defending our purchases. And coming up with some sort of measured improvement would be the logical first step, and is not OCD btw.

A friend picked up the M2 11” yesterday and I felt it was indeed snappier than the M1 variant. Can’t quite put my finger on it, but it feels faster, at least in terms of opening apps!

10% faster single core, 20% faster multicore, 25-50% faster GPU. It's not world changing, but also not meaningless as some seem to believe. Personally, not enough for me to upgrade.
