One thing I just remembered is that Lion should've had an uninstaller, I know theres third-party applications for that, but I think a native one would've been great.. Dragging to the trash doesn't delete all files..

The operating system should have had an uninstaller?

Running the developer GM on my macbook air 11" 4GB ram. Run's as fast as snow leopard which I am delighted with (although if there was a hint of a struggle I was going to use it as an excuse to get one of the tba new models - so now I have to find another excuse).

Not ready to install it on my MacPro at the moment as I have too much work to finish in case anything goes wrong and an iOS app in development that I want to finish before I update my main box to Lion.

Only bug i have found in the GM on my macbook air otherwise is...

Launchpad - not being able to remove apps is a bit of a pain in this GM release and it is surprising that it is there 'all of a sudden' since in the last version you could with CMD/ALT/OPTION and clicking......

Personally I suspect this could be a 'apple imposed' bug at this stage (as it wasn't in the previous 2 releases) to make sure those downloading the leaked GM from dodgy sites & torrents are given an incentive to make sure they update to the proper AppStore retail release in a week or two's time. (or it could just be a surprisingly late bug ;) :D )

Yeah a Application uninstaller, similar to whats found in Windows, again like I mentioned you cannot remove an application completely by dragging it to the trash, files are always left behind, there are third-party applications like AppZapper, but it's not free and I don't see why Apple hasn't included one.. :p

Just my opinion of course..

What's wrong with having an uninstaller? For example, simply trashing Adobe apps doesn't get rid of all the other related junk scattered about the System/Library folders. And no, not all apps have built-in uninstallers.

Fortunately, deleting apps purchased via App Store does get rid of all the associated files as well. So that's a step in the right direction.

I had mistaken what he wrote as uninstaller for the OS itself, the wording threw me off.

Finally some positive words!

People have been mostly negative towards the whole Lion thing, but I guess it keeps Apple on their toes... still gets me down a bit though!

But yes, good to hear some positive words :) You've got me even more excited for it! (I swear down, I'm checking the AppStore and MacRumours at least 15 times a day...)

Just my opinion of course..

Most apps only leave a few files behind and they are very small. Apps like Adobe that put files in other locations usually have un-installers built in. I personally don't really care about the small amount of data left over. I don't install and delete thousands of apps either.

Only thing that is keeping my from updating is customization. I don't know why, I'm just not ready to leave me SL theme.

I'm waiting for CandyBar to receive an update as well.

Does GeekTools work on the GM?

I freaking LOVE Lion! It's not a major overhaul, but there's so many little tweaks throughout the OS that are just amazing. My favorite new thing is the full screen web browsing. I also am loving the gesture based OS as well. Flicking 3 fingers left and right to switch screens is pretty awesome.

Having gone through all the developer previews, and now running the GM for the past few days on an early '09 24 iMac I'm finally convinced that I will for sure be upgrading to Lion.

I've submitted 12 bugs so far. With the GM, 11 of them have been fixed. On three occasions, Apple software engineers contacted me and we had a good discussion about the reported issues. The only outstanding bug for me that hasn't received much attention, and it's a minor one, is window-state after Resume.

I remember when we beta tested Vista for MSFT, all our bug reports fell on deaf ears. What a difference it has been with Apple.

It works the first time you open it but if you close it in system preferences it will crash the next time you try and change the preferences for geektool. Whatever scripts and other things you set for geektool will still show up, you just won't be able to change the preferences.

Damn.

Ah well, I guess I'll wait. I tried Candybar and couldn't get it to work so I'll just keep Lion on the small partition and stick with SL for now.

Thanks.

Ah the dramas.

Ok... lemme share what my experiences are, as my girlfriend definitely ain't interested... (but I guess payback is the bitch... I was so not interested in Sex and the city...)...

So.. Signed for developers on Saturday just so I can get Lion GM.. Yes, I know.. I know.. But I just could not bloody wait any more.. This is the first time I am waiting for the new OS with Apple and its been doing my head in with all the wait and tease...

After I signed I was freaking out as I read that there were people who waited months for the approval.. I mean I couldn't develop an app if my life depended on it (note my Login name... and no... I have all thumbs and digits).. If it took weeks, the Lion would have been released anyway... So.. I was kinda restless.. $119 AUD is not a lot... but it is if it is wasted.

Anyway.. got the approval this morning..

Decided to split the HD into the new Lion partition (yes.. the King gets his own.. ohh how cute he is.. all cuddly...) on my MBP...

The partitioning wasn't working (it was going for some 1/2 an hour and only 1/2 disk was verified) so I quit the partitioning and then found that the HD needed restore from the disc.. so.. an hour of fun right there... Although the bloody system seems so fast after the install.. maybe its me.. not sure...

In the mean time.. I partitioned the HD on my iMac, this took seconds (I made sure my MBP was close by so it can see how iMac did it and be ashamed of its piss poor performance...).

Started downloading it.. but then wondered how I am actually going to install the King onto the new partition given I was downloading in Snow Leopard..

Stopped the download and I found the necessary answers. Anyway.. the Code was shown as used in App store.. Bloody hell.. I know I am an idiot when it comes to computers.. but even idiots should have more luck.. Damn you Goddess of Luck... I hate you...

So.. call Apple... after explaining what happened and admitting that I was an idiot et al... the sexy sounding girl from the Dev Team emailed me a new code..

Downloaded the Lion which took some 20 mins or so and installed it (ah yes, the dialog box comes after you're downloaded it asking you which disc you wish to use.. I am so special).

It is running now on my iMac and I am writing this on the new Safari.

Anyway.

The GM version I have runs well..

No problems or bugs noticed (so far)..

It is extremely fast.

Everything is in order.

Not sure if I can get used to the Mission control, but will not whinge as it would't be fair.. I will send an email to Apple and recommend a couple of things and if the critical mass reaches the point they will do something about it. (Hopefully, they can arrange the desktops into grid (spaces like) arrangement and the gesture can navigate in all directions and not just linear).

Apart from that it really seems nice.

Interface is smooth, actions fast and motion clear. The natural scrolling is an interesting thing.. I totally get em (finally) what they mean by it.. And it really is natural for trackpad, but not for scroll wheel mice... Its gonna be an interesting one to see which setting will win (i.e. which setting I will end up using, because my opinion matters.. ehm.. to me).

I tried all the apps and utilities and they seems to work much better and much faster than they did on Snow Leopard (again, this could be me loosing the plot but it seems so).

Love the spelling check in Safari, as well as the Reading list.

Mail interface is nicer... much nicer... I love it tbh...

I am not sure if iCal leather bound top can be changed... it is bit not my style, but as a calendar it looks nice.

Good to see that the window can be resized on all sides.. Ah I remember how much abuse I copped from "Applefan" mates at work who told me: "Oh, but we just do things differently "... (Note to self: bring this point up at work)... Also the full screen apps.. just as I got used to not having them full screen :)

So far the King cat seems a nice OS.. I think that Apple has done a good job with it.. It will take some time to twist their arms into giving a couple of more options. Apart from that super. I was afraid that this might be Apple's Vista, but there is no danger of that. This cat is nice, purry, cuddly and here to stay.

Cheers.

Boy you can tell iTunes isn't quote Lion-friendly yet. Old scroll bars, little bit sluggish etc.

Aperture 3 has the old scroll bars but it's still nice and quick.

I just want to chime in and say that I love Lion. It is a fantastic upgrade to OS X, and Apple was very careful in choosing which features to take from iOS. It was very well implemented and there are so many very much needed refinements to the OS.

That said of course there are gonna be bugs, of course people will complain about them or hate the changes, people will whine and want their money back when it comes out, some people will swear by Snow Leopard and refuse to upgrade, etc etc.

But at the end of the day, by the time 10.7.1 comes out and more 3rd party apps support Lion's new features, all that complaining and whining will go away, and the people who swore by Snow Leopard will start to realize how nobody is listening to them anymore. This is the cycle of every new version of OS X, from version 10.3 all the way to 10.7 now.

The first 3 versions (10.0, 10.1, and 10.2) were during a time when the OS was still too new and a lot of Mac users didn't start using it until at least 10.2 came out so I won't count those. But every new version since 10.2 has had their groups of people complaining about changes or new bugs introduced (before they got fixed). The only difference between now and back then is the voices are a lot louder (more Mac users now).

But enough with that, I am just happy to see so many people enjoying it like I am! :)

iTunes won't be Lion friendly until iTunes 10.5 comes out in the fall. Aperture 3 might not ever be Lion friendly, as I suspect Aperture 4 will be coming out before long bringing the Lion goodness.

I completely agree, I'm loving Lion! I've even managed to find LaunchPad useful, when it was announced I thought it was useless and pointless and that I would never use it seen as I use spotlight for the majority of my app launches. But when you actually use it, it's great for organising your app's, much better than stacks!

So true. LaunchPad is terrific. In LaunchPad all my dreams came true when it comes to stacks. It brings the apps to you, right in the front.. Superb.

Yeah 10.5 seems good, keeping the beta off my day-to-day though - don't trust it with my iPhone just yet.

Aperture 4 can't be too far away now I agree.

iTunes isn't ready for this decade, let alone Lion.

Apple will probably push an update out on or soon after Lion's release to enable full screen support. It'll most likely be version 10.3.2 or 10.4.
