I was just curious on this topic. Do you think Lion will be the last major release before apple introduces the next major major OS ex: Mac OS 11... etc?

What are your thoughts?

Yeah I think the next step should be OS 11, honestly it's about time for some substantial changes, the icons haven't been changed much since Tiger release, the desktop is also pretty much the same, although I love Lion, I still think the next step is to make some drastic changes...

Agreed, that's how it should be. However, I'm guessing there's going to be one more release ("Snow Lion," you could call it) that will tune the performance and add a bunch of polish before the move to the true next generation.

Either way, the next release is probably 2.5-3 years off at this point. Anything could happen in that time.

Unlikely. OS X is based on NeXt. So the X will remain in the future.
But iOS X could be happening. :)

When Steve Jobs announced the switch to Intel Processors I think he said something about OS X serving us for the better part of 20 years. Either it was at that keynote or at the intro of OS X itself...

Somebody quote me on this please?

Definitely this is the last OSX. Why? Microsoft will present Windows 8 Beta in September OS for ARM and X86 machines, so I am sure that Apple also will follow this way with one common operating system called just iOS. Who knows, maybe Apple will have diabolic plan to migrate to ARM architecture in the future. But they probably wait for much better performance ratio.

Now they have a big problem to advertise their product on keynotes i.e. Ultrabooks (Asus UX21) can be thin and sexy as MacBook Air with lower price. Also made in Unibody chassis technology.

i'm all for improvements, but there is no reason to completely overhaul the system at least UI wise. I don't see what huge change you want. it works fine how it is.

But if the Apple engineers can/have come up with a way to IMPROVE the user experience, why not release it?

I'm not saying they have, and I'm not saying that I think the UI desperately needs an overhaul, just that if they can improve it, I'm all for it!

I believe that was the intro for OS X he said it would be Apple's OS for the next 20 years. Of course plans could change, but I think they will keep the OS X brand for a long time still. There is no reason to change it.

I think they've probably run out big cat names, but I still expect them to go to 10.9.x :)

OS XI would be cool though!

I sure hope Apple doesn't think this way. This would mean we would still have this interface in 25 years "because it works fine".

They don't have to do this right now, but at some point in the future, I'm pretty sure they have to radically change things just to keep the Mac interesting.

Where is this discussion going?!

Every release will be better, groundbreaking, new,, some releases will be major, some minor, etc. The *name* is mainly a marketing tool to sell us the goods.

What drastic changes?
There's much more to an OS than "teh iconz".
OS X is rock-solid. I personally don't see anything that needs to be drastically changed. Evolution yes, revolution, most unlikely.

Unlike Windows which declines, OS X is a platform that grows. Macs sales grow at tremendous pace (which makes me wonder what gives you the idea Apple has a problem advertising their products???); it suggests they are probably doing something right with the OS AND the hardware.

Btw, that Asus UX21, looks nice, indeed (actually it looks a lot like a MBA :D), but it will be reportedly priced 'under $ 1,000' ... like the MBA 11. The problem is that the Asus will have Windows on it :(.

I do agree with that , however, I hope they keep a MAC OS X style and NOT turn OS X into a upscaled version of iOS. A few features coming from iOS is totally fine , but they should not take it too far. I hope you will agree.

This question has been posed a couple of times now and seemingly never answered.
What should OS XI entail, considering some people are apparently clambering for something new?

Actually as was posted elsewhere, Lion is called "OS X" and the previous versions were all called "Mac OS X". It's more likely that iOS will wind up being called OS X as well.

That's not a bad theory at all sir. I just hope they differentiate Mac's and iOS devices.

I think that Snow Leopard is the last real OSX.
We have now moved into the iOS era, for better or worse.

I would say that if Apple moves more iOS features into OS X in the next iteration of OS X.

I do buy the whole 'back to the mac' thing that Steve mentioned.

Well, changing icons is far from 'substantial changes.' If you are bored, try this: http://www.panic.com/candybar/

To make drastic changes just for the sake of change is ill advised. Look at Win 7, it was glitzy and 'eye candy' compared to XP - now all the aero stuff looks overdone (to me). Looks like a photoshop noob went crazy with drop shadows, transparency and 'Outer Glow'. I think the average user is more concerned about 'apps' selection, trouble-free operation, and device integration rather than a jazzed up desktop.
