It is just hard from a psychological stand point to go from the "King of the Jungle" to a Lynx. Though you are probably 99% correct.
Just because Apple trademarked them doesn't mean they will use them. Companies trademark names all the time just so competitors can't use them, or they believe maybe one day they'll get some use out of a trademark.

Next up:

9.8: Sea Lion
9.9: Dandi Lion

Hahahaha. :)

It's just a name. Besides, lions are far from the "king" of the jungle anyway. Elephants are far meaner, rhinos, hippos, crocs.. just to name a few. If they wanted to save the biggest and baddest cat for last, they wouldn't have used Tiger yet. :)

Let's not forget the most beloved cat of them all

My vote is that they will use Mountain Lion, just as they did with Snow Leopard to transition to the intel tick-tock cycle in OS development.

The move from Leopard to Snow Leopard made sense, as the Snow Leopards are smaller than Leopards and strong enough despite their smaller size. And that was exactly what Apple did to the OS, make it smaller in size.
So what would be the next move for the OS after Lion?

White Lion?

iOS integration is obvious.
Music, Videos, Games....basic work office stuff...media printing/web...still the same needs out there.
What else:
3D?
Holograms?
3D Printing?

No idea what a good name they will use..but it will be magical...revolutionary...

Honestly, I see Lion as the last OS X release. Lion would be a good name to go out on, as they are considered the king of the large cats. I think the next major release will take quite a lot from iOS and probably be rebranded with that in mind. I'm not calling the end of the desktop OS, but it likely will be the end of the traditional desktop OS. Hopefully I'm wrong though, because such a transition executed poorly could really decrease the life span of my summer 2009 MBP. Especially if the new OS relies heavily on a different scheme than a mouse (or trackpad) and keyboard input.

Maybe 10.8 will be an incremental update, Mountain Lion.

Then 10.9 will be the last OS X release and will be known as Sabertooth.

Firstly I must say I absolutely love all the box mockups!

However I think that it's definitely the last of the big cats. Everything that Apple does signifies something -- from the 9:41am in every iPhone screenshot to the 4 clocks on Apple's homepage just before launching The Beetles on iTunes (if you remember).

I cannot wait to see what follows Mac OS X, and how it changes the industry. I could only guess that "XI" will introduce the world to touch computing, Steve style. Then, I hate to admit it, but I think that Steve will then say his goodbyes.

This subject does come up quite often and while apple will only be at 10.7 with Lion. I think you can make an excellent case for this being the last. We're seeing a lot of the iPad functionality being built into OSX. Its quite possible that apple will merge it further and rebrand the OS.

I think it'd be better if Apple drops the cat naming scheme..

From a marketing perspective it might make sense, but look at MS when they tried to drop the windows name. Of course they picked a really lame word "vista" which only exacerbated the system.

This actually is very plausible and will probably end up happening...albeit without the Sabretooth thing.

For the love of god people who cares? The OS X 10.8 might as well be called "Bananas", as long as we all call it "Bananas" so we know what we're talking about we should be all set.
