The first time it was used was on iOS 3.2 for iPad, as scratch texture for unloaded pages in Safari... then it was the background of folders in iOS4 then in Lion ;)

Actually, try to flip any Apple widget (like Stickies, Clock, Weather) :D ;)
 
That Galaxy is the Andromeda Galaxy (M31)!

Maybe, just maybe, they'll name all the different versions of Mac OS 11 after astronomical objects?

OS 11.3... Horsehead Nebula
OS 11.6... Ring Nebula
OS 11.9... Supernova!
 

That clearly isn't the correct image. It's far darker and has weird spots everywhere. Not at all crisp like the real one.

I've taken a smaller image and tiled it into 2560x1600 resolution. No lines, tiles perfectly. So use this one instead of that previously posted!

I suppose it would all have to start with OS 11.1 ... the Big Bang.
