I know there's tons of posts on Macbook whine, but I'm not sure if one like this has been posted, if so sorry
So I'm walking through my mall on my break and decide to check out the Apple store. I walk in there, and towards the front of the store were six macbook pros. As I approach the table I hear a high pitched whining noise (not owning a Macbook, I'm not familiar with the sound). Examining each Macbook and turning it over and listening to the side it was definitly that whining noise that I hear about. Now here's the kicker. Out of the six macbook pros on display, FOUR of them had this obnoxious noise.
Don't get me wrong, I love Apple, and if it weren't for this noise, I would own a Macbook right now. I've heard people say that the noise isn't really as common as people think, that the reason it seems so common is because Macrumors forums is where people come out with their problems, not usually their satisfaction. However, I believe there IS an issue if I were a consumer that wasn't familiar with Apple, and decided to peruse their display models, only to hear a VERY distinct whine noise in 2/3 of their product on display of a particular model.
I asked one of the employees why they were making such noises, and they said that it was because they had been on display for a while and it was probably just the fans. I told them to listen closer, that this was no fan sound, and they said they couldn't hear anything but the fan. Having owned a Powerbook and several other noisy computers, I know damn well the sound of a fan after much intensive processor use. This sounded more like a dentist drill than a fan, especially when four of them were making noise.
I'm definitly waiting until the next "Revision", I know they're suppossedly on Rev. D or E by now, but they clearly haven't eliminated processor noise. Maybe those were Rev A models, but after hearing about the other Macbooks that are recently bought still having this noise, I'll wait until maybe the 13.3". Maybe the 17" is clean too?
