I know there's tons of posts on Macbook whine, but I'm not sure if one like this has been posted, if so sorry

So I'm walking through my mall on my break and decide to check out the Apple store. I walk in there, and towards the front of the store were six macbook pros. As I approach the table I hear a high pitched whining noise (not owning a Macbook, I'm not familiar with the sound). Examining each Macbook and turning it over and listening to the side it was definitly that whining noise that I hear about. Now here's the kicker. Out of the six macbook pros on display, FOUR of them had this obnoxious noise.

Don't get me wrong, I love Apple, and if it weren't for this noise, I would own a Macbook right now. I've heard people say that the noise isn't really as common as people think, that the reason it seems so common is because Macrumors forums is where people come out with their problems, not usually their satisfaction. However, I believe there IS an issue if I were a consumer that wasn't familiar with Apple, and decided to peruse their display models, only to hear a VERY distinct whine noise in 2/3 of their product on display of a particular model.

I asked one of the employees why they were making such noises, and they said that it was because they had been on display for a while and it was probably just the fans. I told them to listen closer, that this was no fan sound, and they said they couldn't hear anything but the fan. Having owned a Powerbook and several other noisy computers, I know damn well the sound of a fan after much intensive processor use. This sounded more like a dentist drill than a fan, especially when four of them were making noise.

I'm definitly waiting until the next "Revision", I know they're suppossedly on Rev. D or E by now, but they clearly haven't eliminated processor noise. Maybe those were Rev A models, but after hearing about the other Macbooks that are recently bought still having this noise, I'll wait until maybe the 13.3". Maybe the 17" is clean too?

I plan on buying a 17" MBP soon so I really hope that they don't have this same problem. Maybe I should wait till they are in the Apple Store and go take a listen before I order one.

I went into an Apple Store recently to check out the MBP and it wasn't hot and didn't whine (I lifted it right to my ear)...

Do they keep the computers on all day in Apple Stores?

I'm not sure on that, I have a feeling they do, but I don't honestly know. I do know that it was significantly loud. The heat wasn't actually that bad, but the dental drill noise was definitly prominent.

I may be lucky...

I have a new 2.16GHz/7200RPM drive, with NO flicker and NO whine. So I think Apple is getting it all solved.

Were you there when they had 17" MBP's or before then?

If you did see the 17" MBP, did you hear a whine from it?

I really hope the 17" MBP has no whine- I'm hoping to get one (for free).

If they don't fix this 1.83 MBP, I'm thinking about complaining until they upgrade it to a 17" MBP for free. ;)

People at retail stores are trained to ignore problems and deny knowing about them. That's just how it works. I've been screwed by Apple r942042042 times, and probably will continue to be.

Haha, that is so true! They train the smart ones to be ignorant and the rest just come that way.

Almost all of the displays are earlier, and I mean EARLIER revisions of the macbook pro, some week 2-7 builds. But I'm not surprised that apple hasn't swapped the displays out.

Most all of the PowerBooks and some of the MacBooks in the Annapolis store are missing keys. I put my hand underneath a MacBook Pro and honestly couldn't believe that it hadn't burned a hoel in the table.

Glad I'm waiting until summer to get my MacBook. I wanted to ask though, were the display models you're talking about 15.4" or 17"? Has the 17" even been released for order and to retail stores yet?

Anyways, I'm planning on getting a 17" this summer. I'm gonna go check out the whine at my local Apple store not this weekend but next. If anybody wants me to call them and hold my cell phone up so the computer can whine at you for awhile, let me know.

Daniel.

What are the two digits that follow "W86" in your serial number? I ask because those digits denote the week of production. Possibly newer batches have been fixed. Also, possibly your specific unit is perfect. Also, possibly you haven't noticed the high-pitched noise.

Yet oddly enough, my MBP is only slightly warmer than my old iBook G3...

Apparently heat was more acceptable back then, go figure.

To your first point: You should have made an offer for that "rare gem" on the spot.

To your second point: If they don't, they should. That's what 90% of the Mac business users do. I don't think my ICD at work has actually been "turned off" in three months.

I agree with that, but I'm sure lots of customers bang it around and download crap and break stuff, so I'm sure there's some hardware issues inside that could deal with the fans... people always seem to not care about floor models with electronics. It's pretty gross IMO.

Just a small update, I went back again today (I work in the same plaza) and the Macbooks on display are the original revision Macbooks, so they were the initial release with the problem. I'm aware that they're suppossedly on revision D or E by now and they probably don't have the issues (as much).

I would have, except the Apple store doesn't acknowledge this as a defect or they just don't hear it, so to them it's a perfectly good display model. :)

I went into an apple store today and was putting my ear next to the MBPs and touching their casing, etc. An employee came up to "assist" -- I told him I was seeing for myself the issues I keep hearing about. He said that there weren't any; that "we" here we making a big deal out of a few isolated cases, etc. I belived him and told him I was planning to buy one then and there but forgot my credit card in the car. After getting out of there I realized that all the heat and hi pitch noises fried my cognitive processes for a second. I just went home and ate dinner instead.

I'm waiting for a 15" Merom MacBook Pro. That will be a bug-free machine.

And I have a pink elephant.

Nothing is ever bug free. And even if it was, people would still find things to bitch about.

If the 15" MBP currently suits your needs, and you need a machine now, I don't see a reason to wait.

All i can say is remember the imac G5 rev A. That thing was a freaking hot jet engine with sh*t loads of sound, heat and what not! All apple Rev As are lemons, period. Some people accept it and most of them live in denial. There is no point posting this any more as 90% of the people fall in the second category ... Let the pheonix rise and flames begin...

Irony is that atleast the apple store employees get paid to deny such things!

(They literally redesigned the whole board by RevB!!)
