Mmm a 4k 55” oled tv is around the same price

Which means a 12.9 iPad Pro with an OLED screen sold by Apple will be at least $3000... LMAO

My 65" LG OLED was $2500... and worth every penny. It's amazing in my home theater. Honestly though I don't really care about it on my phone because OLED is a tech that is best viewed in a dark environment. Most of us use our phones in bright/lit environments. Losing some OLED benefits there.

Not sure yet about how I'd feel about it on the iPad...

its an LCD screen. the led's are just the backlight.
Are you okay with a 300$ premium for an oled model?
64 gig 11" iPad Pro starting at 1100$...

LOL! OLED would have added another $200 to the Pro, if not more. It is all gimme, gimme, gimme but do not charge more!

I have no problems with the LCD screen, they have been very nice.

And yet Samsung can put an OLED in their tablets and keep them priced reasonable.

I don't even know why I visit this forum. It used to be generally good discussions, but now it is 90% full of Apple apologists. (note I have an iPhone, Macbook Pro, iPad, and multiple Apple TVs, but I will be more than happy to point out where I think Apple went wrong)

If Apple included an OLED screen, they wouldn't HAVE to up the price by $200 or more, but you can bet they would.

And you realize they are charging $150 more than the last gen right? Almost got that $200 "difference" right there without an OLED.

Couldn't agree more. I'm a huge Apple enthusiast (not a big fan) and own more Apple products that I would like to admit, and I can't believe what I'm reading in this thread. These people are absolutely zombie-fied. You think that because Apple does something that in general costs more money, that the product would HAVE to cost more. That's not the case. Don't let the big fruit company make you believe that they're only making $100 on a device when I know for a fact that they are raking in the profits (even on things like the iPod shuffle, the profit margin is absurd).

Apple would have to at least double the current iPad Pro prices for an OLED screen iPad Pro. I do not think I can afford a $2K+ iPad Pro!

maybe next fall but my guess is they skip OLED all together next year and in 2020 go for microled.

Doubtful... OLED is just now starting to see price drops and still out of the price range that most are willing to pay. (I'm talking about big screen TVs, most will still settle for the $239 LCD from Walmart before paying $1500-$4000 for an OLED even though the LCD pales in comparison as far as PQ goes) MicroLED for big screens is definitely out of the question in the next year or two... and if the tech was available for phones/tablets you can rest assured it will cost a fortune. Literally.

You don't think the huge price increase would have covered it? Samsung has had their full size tablets with OLED for similar prices to competing LCD tablets for a while, I can't think upgrading to OLED for Apple would be that much more, although I really have no idea.

We should be used to Apple by now. By the time they use OLEDs on these, they will call it something like it’s new technology...like “Super Dooper Frajalistick Screen”...and then charge a premium for it.

yeah sound about right, and i think they are going to start off at $599 Microled screen with 12gb of ram with 512GB storage....

Agreed. I have a pair of 49" Sony 900E's for daily watching and a small home theater with DLP projection. I don't need the deep blacks of HDR and 4k on my telephone. I'd never watch a movie on my phone, ever, so OLED is pointless to me and not anything I want to pay for. Just keep developing the LED, retina, whatever, on small screens it is excellent. I'd like to see some maturation and I think we are coming into it now. Any device I buy (S4 + IPP this year) will see extended timelines for upgrades compared to the past and I'm usually at a 3 yr cycle prior to these price increases. Might be time to start running devices into the ground. I can justify adding something like a MBA to spread out my use (current is mmini, pad, phone) to skip the upgrade cycles. It's cheaper than upgrades long term. Next phone I buy (currently using a i7) will probably 4-5 year device. I'm tired of it. I want edge to edge display and something small. Waiting.

it's quite simple. there are none to very few 120hz OLED displays and I don't think Apple will compromise that because drawing is one of the bigger use cases for the tablet right now.

Samsung makes their own displays so they can put them in their devices for cheaper than Apple. Apple also always charges extra then on top of that becaus they ‘need’ high margins.

i think people always miss the point. Samsung ships like peanuts compared to the iPad. There's a reason why Apple always needs to diversify their suppliers. They need to make sure they have enough supply and a single supplier can't strangle them because consumers like some poeple on this board will take ANY single issue with apple products and dig steve jobs out of his grave.

Yes, but a 55” 4K display has a pixel density of 80 PPI.

iPad displays are 264 PPI or something like that.

Not sure if manufacturing facilities even exist for producing 11-13” OLEDs at that PPI and the scale and quality that Apple requires.

Laptops and tablets with OLED displays are very rare.

I would have bought it if it had OLED. Knowing Apple, they're doing this because they are squeezing as many people as possible to buy this one. Then suddenly, they'll have a retina display and everyone will get rid of their 'yucky' retina display.

I love OLED, but people need to realize that it's not always the better choice over LCD.

For one, because of the way OLED works, it can consume more power when the screen is on (current-driven vs voltage-driven of LCD).
Two, the longevity of the screen is an issue, as organic substrates will fade with repeated use, not to mention that is the main reason for the increase in image retention with OLED displays (pixels with more use will be less brighter than surrounding pixels, leading to ghost-like images).

I'm not an EXPERT on OLED, but I just want to point out that there are pros and cons to both OLED displays and LCDs.

Look I agree after owning every iphone since the 3GS that Apple's prices are getting a bit to the point of maybe getting out soon as the phone is the only Apple ecosystem device I own.

But let's not pretend here. Yes Samsung tablets have OLEDs; Samsung makes the displays for the vast majority of OLED smartphones/tablets.

For one, 3rd parties like Apple have to buy them from Samsung at whatever price Samsung chooses to charge. It's nearly a monopoly, especially after how poorly LG screen performed in the Pixel 2XL. And obviously Samsung isn't marking up its own panels for its own devices, they are put in their devices nearly cost and built into the device profit margin, so Samsung has the advantage there.

Second, Samsung doesn't NEED to make huge profit margins on mobile devices. It's mobile device segment is only 12% of their total company profit. Unlike Apple where Id say a good chunk of its revenue comes from iPhone/iPad sales.

Hell Samsung's semiconductor division is bigger than mobile by FAR and bringing in 77.7% of total profits. It's display unit brought in 6.25% of its profits. Divisions Apple doesnt have to make up any slow device sales quarters.

This is all in Samsung's Q3 financials: https://images.samsung.com/is/content/samsung/p5/global/ir/docs/2018_3Q_conference_eng.pdf

So no, it may simply not be practical to buy OLED tablet screens from Samsung based upon price versus what Samsung puts them in their own devices from.

I can only imagine how much iPad's would be if they had OLED screens; especially since the Xs starts at $999.

While I agree that price hikes suck, I do believe that Apple won't use a hardware technology until they're sure it can be produced at scale and with the right specs. Scale is the most important factor, I believe. We tend to forget that these things sell in the millions.

Look at iPhone X, how long were OLED screens around before it? Once Apple knew they could produce it at iPhone scale with the right color specs and who knows what else (like the folded lower screen part for complete edge to edge with no chin) they released a phone with it.

I'm guessing the same thing is the case with iPad-sized OLED screens.

If (when) they do get them, I doubt Apple can get away with a price hike like this.

This time around, they got a whole new design, Face ID, usb-c, and such. Also, who knows how inflation and tariffs have affected the prices (probably related: bloomerg article).

You guys really think Apple couldn't have put an OLED screen because of price? lol

They aren't scared of pushing the prices, they probably save that for another upgrade or skip directly to micro led like some people mentioned.

For this iPad to be perfect it really just missed OLED screen and thunderbolt 3 USB-C in my list.

From what i’ve heard Apple will never make an OLED iPad. They are waiting for MicroLED to be ready for prime time. That won’t probably won’t happen until 2020. Anything could happen, but if you need a new iPad now, I wouldn’t wait for a non LCD version anytime soon. Buy now and upgrade later if you want. But I think it’s gonna be awhile.
