I've been doing a lot of reading on lollipop for Samsung Galaxy devices. Can anyone running lollipop touchwiz confirm they are not experiencing the memory leak that's so talked about. I've read that touchwiz lollipop is the only stock rom that fixed the memory leak, right at version 5.0. Even before Google fixed it and Google is yet to release the fix.

Samsung never rolled out 5.0 to devices, they eventually rolled out 5.0.1

Not sure however if it is fixed in touchwiz, I suspect I may have a memory leak. Did a clean factory install yesterday due to my device having to refresh background content.
Im not rooted; not disabled anything, have official device running official firmware, knox and everything else is 100% ok and whilst app refreshing seemed to be initially sorted, it feels like it's slowly creeping back and I don't know why.

So yeah I'm not sure whether it's the lollipop issue but my ram usage seems to just creep ever higher despite me killing apps regularly.

Also I've read reports yesterday that Google have acknowledged that all 5.0 5.0.1 5.0.2 and even 5.1 have it and it will be patched in next latest 5.1.2 / 5.2

So that would indicate the issue is in the core framework of lollipop. So not confident Samsung or anyone else has somehow fixed that and Google hasn't ?

All i can say for certain personally is that my N4 is not handling memory as efficiently as others here running 4.4.4 that's for sure.

But what is also strange is that whilst I'm having this issue and I've read others over in the xda forum are, some users are not. Likewise the 'contacts has stopped working' bug that seems to be plaguing some users but not others despite them running same firmware.

That being said, my Moto X 2014 which is running 5.0 for a good while now has never exhibited the memory issue (though again have read of others who have).

So yeah I'm not confident to say yes or no in regards to this.....

But if it does creep back into my N4 as bad as it was pre-factory restore I will downgrade back to 4.4.4

Do you know if there is more than one source for the memory leak? The guys at xda think it's in the bootanimation. Hence the reason why touchwiz isn't affected.

BTW, don't think you can just downgrade back to kit kit. Since you installed lollipop, you would have the new bootloader. Then again, I may be wrong.

I posted over on the XDA thread for lollipop to see if others were experiencing similar. They don't think it id memory as much as just a buggy lollipop release - others experiencing similar.

Yeah thankfully I can just download 4.4.4 DBT firmware and flash with Odin to go back without upsetting Knox or anything - so I will likely have to do that sooner rather than later.

I feel like we are all crazy when talking about this memory leak :p

I'm running 5.0.0 on GS4 GPE and from what I can see, the memory leak does not seem to be effecting me. Here are some screens after 94 hours uptime. I would imagine system would be larger if I had issues?

It only seems to effect certain devices, and even then only certain users like MRU has stated. From what I have read, Nexus is most effected, but that may just be because the user base is larger/louder on the websites I read, I dunno?

Ive read that same thing about the boot animation, also something about it possibly being the screen off animation.

Wow your system usage is so low compared to the 5.0.1 build on my freshly factory restored Note 4

Then when you compare it to lollipop usage on my Moto X 2014

Massive difference between ram usage.

Massive difference between ram usage.

I cant believe how lean it seems to be - it does kick up to 350ish mb at times, but it will go back down - which I think is the problem with the lollipop memory leak. When system takes ram it never lets it go (until reboot). Or at least that is one of the theories.

regarding the comparison to the MotoX, it really makes you think what on earth is going on in the background that requires that much on TW..

I'm running a 5.0.1 GPE ROM on my S4 and I've not noticed any memory leak at all. Can't comment on TouchWiz but if it's even half as bloated as it used to be then I imagine it uses a lot more resources than vanilla Lollipop.

Since downgrading my Note 4 back to Kitkat 4.4.4 I am not having the excessive app refreshing problem that it was having in lollipop and standby memory with no other applications running seems to have dropped by upto 500- 700 mb lower. Lollipop isn't fully ready it appears on the note 4.

Here's a screenshot of my running apps screen since all the cool kids are doing it. Galaxy S4 on 5.0.1 GPE.

If you are having memory leak issues I recommend moving away from TouchWiz. It's a bloated mess anyway.

Since I went back to KitKat on the Note 4 it has free'ed up around 500-600mb just standing still, which makes it perform so much better than it did on lollipop.

Still compared to my Moto X 2014 ram usage, yes it's still comparatively extremely bloated.

What device ? Nexus 6 I presume ? :)

Yeah. The improvement is nothing to sneeze at. I was pretty frustrated with redraws, lags, stutters and force closes. Apps are running properly in the background now regardless of how many I have open and they are not redrawing.

Call me a happy customer.

Samsung Canada has delayed lollipop in Canada. Rogers pulled the update for the S5 as it was getting rolled out. So hopefully they go straight to 5.1 for all devices.

That would explain a lot. Hopefully 5.0.2 or indeed 5.1 sorts out the issues Sammy is having.

Many people (including myself) are experiencing the memory leak issue on the S5.

It's so annoying I'm thinking about buying another phone.

I hate having to deal with memory leak related bugs in 2015. I just can't, can't, understand how Google released 5.0 with such a HUGE bug.

Apple probably would have fixed it way sooner.

Now I have to wait like 6 months for the fix to arrive to my S5? Even if I had a Nexus I would still have had to wait 6 months! Unbelievable!

Interesting, are you running Samsung's Touchwiz lollipop?

I experienced terrible memory management / performance when I updated the Note 4 to lollipop. My iPhone 6+ rang rings around it memory wise despite having 2gb less. I posted a video showing what was happening in the N4 threads.

Now some claim Samsung's Touchwiz doesn't have the specific memory leak as the Google nexus devices, but whatever is the actual issue Lollipop on my Note 4 was from a memory management perspective truly awful.

The S5 having less ram than the Note 4, if the same issue is built into its Lollipop update I can only imagine the frustration.

Are you able to rollback to KitKat ? I was on the Note 4 and now it performs as it should.

My understanding is that the memory leak will be addressed without an OS change in non-Nexus devices.

It would still likely have to be some form of OTA firmware update from Samsung unless the issue is isolated to a specific app that updates via PlayStore.

Problem is that can take forever, they already have brought the lollipop rollout on N4 to a complete halt and it's over a month since they ended its rollout and still no fix or new lollipop update for existing users on 4.4.4

So yeah I assume they will jump to 5.0.2 and even existing users who did get 5.0.1 will be getting firmware update to fix it ...... The big question though is when ?

Install CyanogenMod or a GPE ROM, I doubt you'll regret it. And in the future don't buy TouchWiz phones.

This kind of crap is why the public has a poor perception of Android I guess. Clueless OEMs ****ing the OS up and taking forever to fix it.

I hate to be that guy, but stock Android has\had a memory leak of its own.

It's was fixed pretty quickly by Google and any device that has stock Android will get that update without much delay.

I got two Moto G's and an S4 running stock Lollipop and not noticed a memory leak on any of them either. In fact the RAM management issues caused by Moto were fixed in the new Moto G update.

OEMs are seriously Android's big weak spot.

Eh, I am reading reports that 5.1 has the memory leak as well and Google has a fix, but it isn't merged with ASOP yet.

I think some of the issue is memory leak and some of the issue is overly aggressive background app killing. I had the same problem on my Nexus 5 going from 4.4 -> 4.4.4. On 5.0.1 currently and not noticing any issues, but I have read that the N5 has issues with 5.1 and to avoid it. On the N6 I have noticed that the sudden reboots (kernel panics) have stopped (so far). I hadn't seen the same reloading issues you were seeing though (granted it is a different phone).

5.1 has a memory leak that Google has already fixed internally. No fix has been issued, though.
