Yeah. The improvement is nothing to sneeze at. I was pretty frustrated with redraws, lags, stutters and force closes. Apps are running properly in the background now regardless of how many I have open and they are not redrawing.

Call me a happy customer.

I cannot wait for 5.1 then on my Necus 6 as I am disheartened by refreshes when my Moto X 2014 is fine.

Can one get an apk file to update to 5.1? I do not root or do android sdk, I would not even know where to begin.

I am not exactly sure how it works on nexus because ive never owned one, but you should be able to 'sideload' the OTA with the stock recovery. There should be some kind of button combination that gets the phone into recovery that you hold while booting

I dont think you need a pc / android SDK installed, but I'm not positive,
on my phone (gs4ge) you do need the SDK because the OTA file must be sent through it, in older android versions I could have it installed from the sd card, but they took it away for some reason with kit kat. My recovery wont install OTA's located on internal storage so sending from pc through sdk-tools is the only option. Lame, I worry it may be that way on nexus too.

this is possible with total stock, unrooted etc, it is a legitimate process

On a Nexus device you can just boot into the recovery and flash OTAs from the internal storage. I did this many times on my Nexus 7.

I would do a fresh install using the stock Nexus images. It's easy and the phone will be as new.

I've heard terms like Wugfresh that people have used to install the OTA but I am not familiar with those. I just used ADB to sideload the OTA. It was fairly straight forward and requires no root or anything of the sort. QBKing on youtube has a video on installing 5.1 with the links to the files you'll need.

I wouldn't go that fat, but I do have to wonder why there were so many. Was 5.0 such a big change under the hood?
Yes.. A lot under the hood. Two major components really.... Imbedding material design in the android OS and ART runtime. ART is the biggest culprit as google went away from Dalvik which is a runtime based on the Java Framework. Android Run Time is Java based too, but the frame work was developed from scratch by Google. Kind of like how they created their own JavaScript framework (Angular.is).

If ART was the prime culprit how come all those people on 4.4 devices that have switched from Dalvik to ART in settings are not experiencing the same issues. ?

Thanks folks for the info and I'll definitely look into it as I need it as straightforward as possible.

The Nexus 6 runs fine primarily no lag but I just don't like app refreshes. I know it is Lollipop and Nexus per se as my Moto X 2014 doesn't do it.

Heck I have smartphones with 1GB that don't do it on Kit Kat. Not running ART though.

ART is optional there. And yes, I have had issues with 4.4 and ART on my M8. Also, ART is experimental on that platform. You just don't hear too much about it because there is the option to go back. Can't do that on 5.0+

Isn't ART in 5.0 an updated version?

It is, yes, but that doesn't mean art is to blame off the bat. Would be interesting if he had evidence for that claim. From what I've read on the speculations on xda , they claim some problem with boot and screen off animations.

I'm at 240 hours now and just checked system ram usage at 249 mb, spikes to 350ish occasionally. Two days ago it was up to 450 and I thought I was leaking, but it settled. I don't know what's going on but that's pretty good.

I've ran art since kit kat was first available and have had a great experience.

Wugfresh / Nexus Root Toolkit is THE BOMB for the skidish.

It wipes your device so everything is deleted and boots to a factory fresh latest version. Be sure to back up your photos and such before starting. It walks you through the process. It has embedded videos to let you know the (very few) steps to get you to what you want.

It gives you piece of mind that the code uploaded to the phone is accurate and streamlined. Update, on top of an update, on top of an update can make you wonder if a gremlin, or two, has gotten inside the code. Wigfresh frees you of that concern.

Funny thing yesterday is my Nexus 6 did not refreshes apps at all, nada!

Kind of strange but it was acting like I already installed 5.1 which elevates refreshes for the most part.

The only thing I can thing of was that I was at a location that had very strong wifi, apps updated very quickly and then I began to check for refreshes with apps that were opened. No problem!

I go elsewhere and the problem with apps refreshing happened again, especially webpages opened in chrome. It has to be a network thing and speed as part of the equation, cannot think of anything else.
