I haven't used windows in years, (I jumped ship when XP came out) but as I work in tech and am applying for a tech teaching post, I feel the need to start keeping abreast of the Windows world. (will buy my first Intel mac this summer).

Can anyone tell me what are the advantages of this LHRL project? Will all windows software and drivers really work with it? (their site was very unclear)

Why wouldn't it be sued into the ground same as Linspire / Lindows was?

It's installing now :D

So Parallels looks like no graphics support from install... will mess around.

That really seems like typical "Mac is great, everything else sucks" idealism. Leopard is version 10.5, coming from version 10.4.9. If you really think "omg the new os will suddenly make everything else suck," then you shouldn't be using a computer. Go dabble in real life.

Its not like its a huge change. In fact, "as far as I know" (but respecting the rules here, I won't say why) the GUI changes are nothing to **** your pants over. A little more brushed metal here, a little less blue there. Whatever. Vista changed the whole look of Windows (whether for good or bad, thats debatable) - Leopard isn't going to be making any dramatic changes on the visual front.

I don't think anyone has the right to bash an unreleased OS like that, especially considering the fact that there are still countless hidden features. I would also say that a resolution independent gui is a big deal.

You know, with a title like "Longhorn finished", I thought you meant that Server Longhorn, aka Windows Server 2008, was complete.

This is what I thought this thread was going to be about, also!

So is there a featurelist of what this team wants to accomplish with this strange project? Are they trying to finish WinFS, or was that already out before this version of Longhorn?

its like a reverse engineered os thats widows compatable but in early stages (NT based not dos)

Well you'd b**dy hope so! DOS was a disaster. How a company like they kept shipping DOS based systems right up to 2000 was almost as embarrassing as watching Apple floundering around in the 90s trying to build their next generation OS. NT has a lot going for it. Windows 2000 was an impressive product I felt.

OMG WOW! Longhorn looked great maybe even better than.. dare I say it... OS X! but only for a split second.. the music distracted me! Please dont abadon me Mac community I didn't mean to say it!

No, no. I agree, it is more impressive than OS X. But it's just vapourware. Cairo blue everything else out of the water in the 90s. But never shipped. If MS had brought that to market it would have been good.

The only thing I don't like about that video is the use of Windows and "soul" in the same sentence.

Mac OSX is in my opinion way better than Vista, but that doesn't mean Vista is that bad, in fact I find it pretty good :p

All Microsoft products look GRRREAT compared to the previous version.

That's because the previous version was always terrible!

I can see it now...

i) CNN picks up the story and runs a fifteen second spot on it, or links to it on their homepage.

ii) A decent sized chunk of the world's hacking and programming community, being sick of M$, jumps on the bandwagon.

ii) Public awareness of LH Reloaded mushrooms.

iii) Due to the massive number of people contributing to the betatesting, LH RL becomes more solid than Vista within... a year, just in time for the majority of XP users who are going to switch to do so. In addition, it's fully compatible with Vista-only software and hardware.

iv) LH RL, being free, efficient, and stable, becomes MORE popular than Vista.

v) Microsoft whines and moans.

vi) No one cares.

vii) Court ruling: It's official, the US Legal System doesn't care, either.

viii) LH RL butchers Vista sales.

ix) Microsoft starts requiring "Vista-approved" products to have a software lock in them that allows them to work ONLY with genuine Vista PCs.

x) The LH RL team breaks the code and has a patch for LH RL available for download within 48 hours.

xi) Microsoft whines and moans.

xii) No one cares.

Come on, LH RL team... no pressure, no pressure. ;)

Unfortunately, it stops about about step 5. Microsoft moans, the courts are not going to see it as legal. The courts might not shut down the project, but if it's not legal, there's no way any large corporation will EVER install it on one of their machines for fear of Microsoft suing them, no manufacturers will ever preinstall it on a computer, no store will ever sell it, and thus it will never be used by anyone but hobbyists.

I get the distinct impression that the creative team made some...modifications...to the information displayed during install.

Read for yourself.

While we're at it...

EDIT: I installed Parallels Tools for Vista. One driver had an install failure (not sure which) but the others worked and I have full graphics support; Explorer.exe is being buggy though. But IE works fine, the GUI looks better than current Vista IMHO and it feels snappier than Vista.

So yeah, the Macbook Pro doesn't have a [Delete] key. (I don't think). And I'm stuck here:

MacBooks and MacBook Pro's DO have a Delete key.

Our Delete key is viewed as BackSpace to Window. If you hold FN when you press it, it registers as a Delete.

Just hold down FN. The key combo is Fn+Ctrl+Alt+Delete on a MacBook.
