And the other one is way too expensive (for my needs and budget). For that price I could almost replace all four of my internal drives with 2 6TB drives.

Were you looking at the model that is $150? Make sure the "color" is set to TS431U. There are many devices under the same listing and the way Amazon does URLs I don't know how to provide a direct link to the exact model. For me if I go to the link it shows the TS431U by default.

On the pictures, it looks like there are trays on the Orico.

I am looking for an enclosure. Three of the drives are in the enclosure permanently, with only one bay used for off-site backups.

Hello,

I work on a 2009 Mac Pro with an esata card. I'm using an esata external enclosure, but it's clunky and doesn't work very well. I get random disconnects while copying files.

Of course I could buy a USB3 card or a better esata card. Then again, I'm going to buy the next Mac Pro when it comes out in a year or two and don't really want to spend hundreds of dollars for cards I won't use all that long.

If I buy a USB2 / USB3 enclosure and use the USB2 port (until I can use the USB3 port with the next Mac Pro), will I see a significant speed difference compared to esata?

Thanks
Hi Loa,

No kidding - I'm looking at the Sans Digital TR8M I have sitting here. I don't use it anymore and was about to post for sale. I'm in Ottawa. It doesn't have hard drives. I had it connected to my older Mac Pros before I sold them. It worked fantastic. Hasn't been used in a year, but add some hard drives and it should be a-ok - it holds up to 8 drives.

If interested, PM and we can chat price. I'm not out to gouge anyone and wouldn't want to see it tossed in the trash. I'd rather someone use it.

Cheers,
Brian

Oops...just saw that you're looking for an enclosure. This does have trays with a door to cover them.

You can buy extra trays for many of the enclosures - would that be a solution?

I do this, and like the fact that the tray helps to protect the drive.

Its description is: (from the Amazon link)

"Easy to Connect and Setup
With this trayless removable HDD slots, you just need to pull out the flip open door, place drives into according slots and latch the door. Then turn the unit on and press START to enjoy the Super Speed USB3.0 data transfer experience."

There are a number of enclosure makers using true (no tray or faceplates etc. ) trayless slots, I have one using those . It's not a great enclosure ( Datoptic ), but the drive slots work very well and are solid .

Icy-Dock has some too, iirc .
