Well folks, I've spent the weekend playing Eschalon Book 1 and having a blast. It is a very good game, in the style I was hoping to find. The demo I downloaded is very extensive, and after over 7 hours of game play, I've only come to its limits once. I will have to buy the full version by the end of the day, I'm sure. :)

I also played an hour or two of EOB (many thanks to doh for the trilogy package...that's just way cool). Even the short time I was playing was great fun. I forgot how I missed these little games.

Thanks again, everyone!

I may have to try out Eschalon myself. I've heard some good things about it, and the screenshots I've seen reminded me of Baldur's Gate a bit, which is right up my alley. I've got a few others to finish first, though...

I'm not sure if it's the sort of thing you're looking for, but the old Fallout games are also available on OS X. The setting is more post-apocalyptic science fiction than medieval fantasy, but the games are great. Again, though, I'm not sure how easy they are to track down at this point, or how they do with the newer Intel Macs.

Hi there, try Good Old Games website, it's a fantastic place to go and get all your old RPG favorites for next to nothing. I have bought Planescape Torment from there as well as picked up the Diablo II Warchest at BestBuy for cheap. A TON of games for under $10!

Good Old Games has a great variety of not just RPG's but they also have most any genre you can recall for sale completely DRM free (digital rights management). Good Old Games guys essentially went to the rights holders of those games and made them an offer to buy the game title outright. Here is the link to the RPG's they offer:

There is 1 RPG for iOS I saw that the interface was very much like EoB called Undercroft.

Undercroft is great game in the old school RPG tradition, but it's somewhat limited by it's platform. I wish there were more like this on iOS.

Elderscrolls 2 Morrowind, and Elderscrolls3 Oblivion both need Windows which can be run in bootcamp.

Of the games I mentioned, Oblivion as an open world RPG is the best. The others have the typical restricted world alleys and invisible walls which I have never liked.

The community port of Oblivion ran great on my 2008 MBP (8600M GT/512MB) when I played it. Running Oblivion mods is another matter. Pain to keep track of everything by hand.

Misfortune

There is an eye of the beholder inspired browser game called "Misfortune". It works on mac as well. It's really nice - hand drawn by a children's book illustrator, and the story is quite charming.
You can see it in: www.loadingames.com

If you are looking to play the old, old games on your new(er) Mac, then the DosBox emulator Boxer is just the ticket...that, and a search of abandonware sites, and/or the Good Old Games website at www.gog.com.

If you enjoyed RPG's, and want to re-immerse yourself in a newer experience, then you will likely have to get a copy of Windows and run Bootcamp on your Mac. I am finicky about my RPG's, but I absolutely *love* Morrowind (Elder Scrolls III). I had enjoyed Baldur's Gate on my Classic Mac's, and I tried to get into Neverwinter Nights, but it just didn't grab me. YMMV.

Keep us posted as to what you find...

Hi

I tried a GOG game in Mac boxer and it requested something to do with MS, and would not work.

Is there a compatabilty list for GOG games for Mac Boxer ?

Ha!
Cool thread.

I have Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II for Mac. All original materials, too. BG came on 5 CDs and BGII on 4, I believe. BGII actually runs in OSX, but not BG.
I think keeping the ol' 12" PB around may be a good idea. : )

I finished BG once but only got maybe 20/25% through BGII.

I finished Neverwinter Nights on my 12" PB. I've played maybe 15% of Neverwinter Nights 2 in Windows.

The characters and story in BG and BGII were great. Finishing Neverwinter Nights felt a bit more like a hack n' slash slog, but I was determined for some reason.
Neverwinter Nights 2 has felt richer with story and characters (having actual party members and not just a Henchman helps a lot), but I just haven't devoted that much time to gaming in the past few years.

Not sure

Could you provide more info? What game are you trying? I'm sure it would be more than one could wish for, for Boxer to work 100% with every game. Are you sure it is a DOS game, and not a Win95 or later game?

while that would be awesome, it would have to be a total remake, as source code isn't available.... it wouldn't be easy. They would be great though.

I love old RPGs.

I also have Might and Magic 1 - 5 all in a single app
Ultima Underworld 1 and 2 in a single
Lands of Lore I
Betrayal at Krondor
Wizardry: Crusaders of the Dark Savant
Daggerfall
Dungeon Hack

I have all these up in the DOS section at Portingteam.com forums for anyone who wants to download them and play... they are ready to just download and double click in Finder and play them :)

Hi

Thanks for these :)

the Windows versions ported with Wineskin or Cider still run just fine in Lion.

It's funny how that works, eh?

This is already true for Classic games versus their DOS versions. A couple years ago, I played through the old Gold Box series. Easier to run a DOS emulator than the old Mac versions.
