Since I don't have any credit being 19, my friend told me who works at Best Buy i'll probably have to pay a 500 dollar security deposit since I don't have a credit score. He said I bring my dad and put it under his name since his credit score is 807 but I would rather have it under my name. Damn this sucks, looks like it's time for a credit card.

Ok thanks for posting?

BTW, I'd probably refrain from posting details such as your parent's credit worthiness online. If you were my kid I'd probably be pretty annoyed.

But your not my kid, so you don't have to worry about anything. Just wondering if anyone else had to pay a security deposit. I love how no matter what a person posts there is always negativity in a thread. Example above^^^

I can't be your kid ... just sayin'.

Kiddo, what I said was not negative. Your post reads like an update to your facebook page or blog. It had absolutely no question in there so perhaps in your attempt to defend your post you could have tried a little harder to post the very question you just asked. Let me help ... "I'm 19 with no credit and found out from a friend that I may have to pay a security deposit to get an iPhone. Has anyone else run into this problem?"

But like you, I like that no matter how obvious it is people will post threads that read like blogs, lack questions or basis for discussion, and then whine when they don't get the response they want. Example above ^^^^.

My answer, btw, would have been a link to other threads where people asked that very question. I would have then said that you may want to call or go to AT&T because your friend may be wrong. And then I would have made the comment about your parents.

Now, if you take that as negative then you're hypersensitive and no one will win with you. Unless of course I posted "OMG WTF BBQ that is HOOORRIDD! No wayz man! That suckz!" In that case we'd probably get along better. ;)

Good luck finding out from AT&T but you'll likely need to pay a deposit for the very reasons you stated above.

Thank you for clearing things up. I hope for the best come June 2010.

You'd be surprised, sometimes even people with no credit get approved.
You should walk into an AT&T store with your ID and social sec number and they should be able to tell you if you qualify or not.

I will hopefully qualify, one thing I always do is pay my bills on time. I give my dad 2000 the day it's due for car insurance and pay some other bills. I'm good with my finances but I know that won't change anything when I walk into the store. Would it be possible to go in tomorrow and check how much a security deposit will be or should I wait til june?

Sure

you don't know for sure untill you ask. at least they will have a better idea then we will. only other thing if you decide to wait till june. you can start building your credit a little now. a secured credit card or places that will let you make small loans. build at least a 6 month history with them or if your dad does cosign it's still under your name, just pay on time.

If you are going to wait until June, why don't you pick up a credit card. Pay it off each month, and build up some "good" credit. I'm not saying that it will eliminate the security deposit, but who knows.. it just might.

oops.. sorry labman.. I didn't read your post before I submitted mine.

I had to pay a security deposit recently with my iPhone replacement. There are literally NO service providers in my state here in Australia so Apple had to send me a new phone and once I received that I had to send my old phone back - only once they got my old unit would they 'give me' my deposit back. Kind of makes sense, stops people from screwing them over.

If you're going to go in before June, don't walk in and ask about the security deposit. It may never get brought up. But if you ask, that might prompt them to give you one.

They don't just arbitrarily decide if you have a deposit or not, your social security number and your credit score which they run with a new activation will decide if you have a deposit or not.

I thought the same too, but I've heard about 18 year olds who have no credit not being required to make a deposit.

I was thinking that. I won't say a word about it. Just go along with the business lol

did you call them?

I also thought I'd need to pay a security deposit since I know what my credit is but for some reason I was approved for four iphones.

Call and see if you get approved, only takes a minute 1-888-333-6651

it is all dependent on your credit score, and there are a lot of factors that go into that that number, it isn't just about credit cards and paying them off on time

when you go to get a cell phone they run your credit, they won't deny or make you do a deposit based on age.

That is the number above? I'll call tomorrow thanks.

I'm 19 (since July) and I have just 1 credit card I got when I was 18 with a $1000 limit and I did not have to pay a deposit with AT&T when I opened a line a week ago under my own name with my SSN.

Is that the citi student credit card? I'll look into that. Thanks

One little tidbit I've heard on some other cellphone/AT&T-centric forums is that credit requirements sometimes get relaxed somewhat near the end of the month, and particularly near the end of a fiscal quarter (end of March, end of June, end of September, end of December). This is because some regional markets will try to boost their new subscriber adds to make their results better, and they can get more signups if they ease up a little on credit restrictions. So, you might want to give that a try.

In any case, you can try signing up now if you're ready. it's near the end of the month, and right in the holiday shopping season, particularly in the midst of AT&T getting a marketing beating from Verizon. So they might be more motivated right now to sign people up, get some iPhones out the door, and that means lower deposits. The worst thing they can say is that you need a deposit, in which case you can just try again later when you've got some credit established (or saved up for a deposit).

So what your saying is go and get an iphone toward the end of June possibly. So I wouldn't get a security deposit if possible.

I'm not saying it's guaranteed, but, you may stand a better chance of low (or possibly no) security deposit.
