Am I mad....but...in every screenshot of the iphone it showed Loopt which seemed a killer app for the iphone, yet I don't see it in the iTunes AppStore was it not released at launch?

I'm in the UK btw....and its the middle of the night so I suppose officially the iphone launch isn't for another 6 hours....

Loopt is out.

It's just that it is only for the United States. I emailed them way back asking whether they're internationalizing it.

They're trying to.

So apparently they just haven't gotten there yet.

I have a question about loopt and whrrl. Do your friends have to have GPS in their phones for this to actually work? Can someone just explain to me how it all works? Thanks!

Hmm, it shows up for me. Weird.

What I want to know is why it needs SMS to function. Using SMS to confirm a friend or something is OK by me, but it seems like that's not the whole story. I'd try it out myself but I'm lacking 2.0-toting friends.

Can anybody fill me in?

edit: See the fine print at http://www.loopt.com/phones/iphone.

i know you don't have to have GPS for Whrrl because it can work on the ipod touch. loopt however cannot work on the ipod touch so i'm not 100% sure about that. but you can tell which apps work/don't work for the ipod touch by looking at the requirements to the right of every app page. apps that work "for ipod touch say "for iphone and ipod touch". those only for iphone will say "for iphone"

sounds like a great tool for stalkers...seems like a rather bad idea.

Hope it doesn't work out that way though.

EDIT:

Pretty cool app for parents keeping track of their kids though.

I just downloaded it. Pretty cool app, except I don't know anyone on there. I have almost no friends w/ iphones, and i know no one on loopt. Anyone in Chicago?

I have the same problem. I hope that the new iPhone 3G release will fix that.

Works for me and 2 of my friends, they don't have to use an iPhone as it works on Blackberry phones as well. Keep in mind when it tells you where someone is, it's only if that person allows it and it doesn't tell you the name of the location, just the streets near it.

Example, if I am somewhere on Main Avenue and the closest street near me is Central Avenue, then it will say "island is near Central and Main avenue", not "he's at Starbucks".

You can add pictures and details to where you are if wanted but it's totally your option, not the phones.

Loopt was great for the first two hours... now it crashes my iphone everytime i open it and restarts the phone. GRRR. Anyone else having this problem? I cannot get the damn app to even open now.:mad::mad:

looks like a great application. too bad I don't have hardly any friends with the iphone/smartphones.

I was excited about this application, but it's completely useless until it's capable of handling information from less advanced phones.

I can count on one hand the people I know with iPhones, and I may need the other to include Blackberry users.

I suppose I'll just wait until Facebook implements this.

I like Loopt is pretty neat app, but it seems you have to ping or text your friend to get their new location. Is there anything out that will give the location without ping or text, or is this the way it works with SMS? Maybe an update button to press instead?

Agreed, I did a test with my buddy and I waited on the map page for him to login. It still showed him at home. I had to go back to the home button then log back in then it updated.

Also, can anyone confirm if it tracks you while the phone is sleeping. If not, then that's kinda goofy since you won't know where anyone is until they open loopt. So you have to open loopt everytime you get somewhere new to keep your position up to date???

Same thing with me. If your friends have not opened up Loopt you have to ping them first to get their location, then it sends them an SMS which they have to reply to by clicking reply, then click the link, then log in and then it shows up in Loopt. Pretty dumb if you ask me.

Oh, does anyone know why when reply to a SMS you have to log in all the time?

Umm... Loopt already ties in with Facebook.

Loopt is the best social networking app for the iphone (At least right now).

Whrrl SUCKS... how did they possibly design that application without the ability to zoom... LAZY LAZY programming. The only problem I've had with Loopt is that if you manually set the location to a restaurant/etc... how do you get it to go back to updating your location from the triangulation/gps?

ive yet to receive the confirmation text..

ive deleted and resynced a couple of times...

anyone else have this issue?

Same Here

I have tried at least 10 times and can not get a confirmation text. And there is no one to actually talk to to fix this issue.

Glad this program was free.

So what is the difference between Loopt and Whrrl? I like how with whrrl, you can look at the map and get restaurant reviews/recommendations. I live in NYC and for some reason, I can never think of any good places near me. Does Loopt have this functionality? If so, how is it implemented?

Shame..

That SMS requirement just killed it for me. With only 200 a month, I wouldn't want to waste it on this. :(

You can turn off all SMS notifications in settings. I turned them all off except for friend invitations.
