I've experienced this intermittently as well for some time now (I get "swooshes" and "dings" like mail is being sent and received). It's concerning, because you think perhaps you've been hacked and someone has hijacked your mail program.

It just happened to me now (which is how I found this thread) and so I checked the Console for anything suspicious. There was nothing obviously Mail-related, but this error from Glims (Safari extension) appeared about 8 times right around when the sounds occurred:

2012-08-11 2:43:01.964 PM Safari[9283]: Glims Error: BrowserWindowController not found - Unknown Safari Internal

This may be entirely unrelated to your problem, but perhaps some apps are configured to use these sounds for errors? It's worth taking a look in the Console, you might get some hints as to what's going on.

As for me, I can't see any reason why these Glims errors would be related to these sounds, they just occurred around the same time.

I just recorded my computer doing this, since most people in this forum don;t seem to understand exactly what the bug is. I put my computer to sleep for 2 minutes, woke it up, and then

ding
ding ding ding
swoosh
ding ding ding
swoosh
ding swoosh
.....
....
ding ding swoosh
etc

I can post the video if anybody is interested. Otherwise, I hope somebody figures out what the hell is going on.

I have this same issue as well. It seems to happen when I wake the laptop up from sleep and goes on continuously... ding ding ding swoosh etc. The only way I know to stop this is quit mail and launch it again. Which is annoying to say the least but not the end of the world.... anyway would sincerely appreciate if anyone could offer an explanation/fix :)

swoosh error with headphone use

This has happened to me when plugging in headphones to view a webinar or video. The swoosh-ding-swoosh-ding is troubling because it does sound like the Mail program is doing something on its own. I have always responded by quitting Mail, which is easy, but frustrating...because I shouldn't have to...

Same event on an iMac, OS X 10.7.5, Mail 5.3

I can't see any messages in the draft or sent mail folders of Mail that indicate something was actually sent when the "ding ding ding swoosh" event happens on wakeup. Very strange!

Own a 2-month old r-MBP w/ the newest version of Mtn Lion - usually put the machine to sleep @ night and have not noticed the issue described in this thread until this morning - same problem as quoted above - quit Mail from the dock, sounds stopped, re-opened Mail w/o a problem. I really use none of the other messaging/notification apps discussed previously - will keep an 'ear out' the next few days - :)

Cool! I'm a dev and I've been putting off installing those dev builds for some time now. Looks like it's time to do it. I was thinking of reporting this bug to Apple via the developer bug report tool but I hadn't got around to it. Looks like somebody else already did.

I still get the sounds on 10.8.4 just not as many as before. I might get one or two pings/swooshes vs. hundreds previously. I guess that is an improvement...

Just a note, this has just started happening to my AFTER upgrading from 10.8.2 to 10.8.4 about 4 weeks ago. It did NOT happen before I upgraded.

Also on a side note, after the upgrade to 10.8.4 my laptop would not sleep when closed. The screen would go dark and the front LED would come on, but the laptop would remain hot, and immediately available after opening. Found it was likely Internet Connection Sharing was enabled, but I'm not sure why. Disabling that fixed it.

I'm running the mavericks developer beta and I haven't noticed the issue since I installed it. So maybe apple finally fixed it in mavericks.

My wife says she gets this same exact sound on her MacBook Air. Been happening to her for about a year or so. Even on one 2011 MBA and two 2012 MBA's so definitely not limited to hardware.

I have never noticed it on my MBA's or MBP. Must be some software setting? We both use Gmail through the Mountain Lion Mail app.
