I didn't have it using Panther but now have it with Tiger. I was using "Highest" processor performance and it would chirp when running the slideshow in iPhoto, amongst other things. Changing to "Automatic" reduced - it's now very faint, but why should I have to reduce the performance? Hmmmm :(

Yeah this is something that bothers me as well. What was very disturbing on the PM G5 I sent back for exchange was the sound continued to get louder everyday. First it would only happen in CPU intensive apps and then it got to where it was a constant high pitch whining all the time. It was getting to the point where I would hear ringing in my ear after I left the room becuase of the computer haha. I hope the next one does not do this or at least not as freakin' loud.

Where do I change the CPU setting to "Highest"?
I would like to hear how loud does it get.

Apple --> System Preferences --> Energy Saver

You should find it in there :) Good luck.

Im on my second one..

I got a clearance Dual 2Ghz G5, the rev B. models they just cleared out (1699 student not a bad price...) It had a drop in TIger install DVD, so I never even ran it with Jaguar. It had the chirping, squeeling, radio frequency noise so I immediately called apple they exchanged it for another one, and damned if this doesn' t do it too.. The worst part is I do pro audio stuff and use a M-audio firewire audio interface, the sound is transmitted out of my audio interface!!! The only way to make it stop is to use CHUD and disable napping but I am concerned about doing this long term. So do I understand people are still having this trouble even with the Rev C version?? THIS SUCKS I saved for a long time for my new mac.

Yep problem is still there on the Rev. C models. I just got my replacement and it still does it :( The only way to really avoid the problem is to go with a single processor powermac. I would do this but the graphics card, RAM, system bus, hard drive and superdrive are all outdated on this model... oh well I guess I will just run folding all the time to keep it quiet.

Well the more I think about it the more I don't like it. It is very hot in the room the computer is in during the day and by having folding running, the computer runs 20 degrees or more warmer :( up from a Die temp of 135 to 155 to 160. Without folding running I get the same high pitch sound now as before and it is actually LOUDER in games than the old system was . I am going to wait until after WWDC announcements to see if a new SP unit comes out and if so I'm going to return the system for one of those. No more dual processor troubles for me ...... apple obviously just can't get this one right

you can use the mac 68k right from our team hear at macrumors it is here: http://calnet.sdsu.edu/mc68k/

This way it boots up at startup.

I'm now folding with the macrumors team :) I can tell the sound is coming from the PSU so I will just deal with it for awhile until apple comes up with a power supply that does not do this. When that happens I will have them change mine out. For now... lets fold!

Is your name for folding Chrispy? You should be moving up the ranks with a G5. You might make the top 100 :)

I'm registered under my e-mail name which is had500. How do I keep tabs on what my rank is anyways? This is actually becoming kind of exciting haha. Glad I can be of assistance to the world of science.

Ok, now I'm under the name Chrispy haha. Do I have to complete a protein before my name will start to showup anywhere? Thanks

I mentioned this problem to the owner of a dual 2Ghz PMac who said that it could be the fan bearing squeaking. I'd like to have someone who has this issue replace the stock fans with stuff from www.silenx.com or the like and see if the problem goes away.

Thanks for the info. I have tracked down the source of the sound and it is definitely the power supply unit. Apple has assured me that this will not cause damage or loss of performance in the computer but if it bothers me I can have it replaced. However, having it replaced does not mean the problem will be fixed for sure soooo ... I'm just going to leave it for now.

here you can keep tabs on the team: http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=3446

Then at that same site you can search for your users once you complete your first work unit. If you are using the script type "work" into the terminal to see your how far you are on the current WU. If you have any questions come on over to the Distributed Computing section of these forums :)
