I recently picked up a d70 for 185.00 just to have a backup body. I'd say look around for a used d70 (or even better, a d70s) and get a 50mm lens. That should keep you under 300.00.
I think the D70 was (and still is until you get spoiled by a d300 or better) a great camera.
