You're not required to get LTE service if you buy an iPad with LTE. You can just enable LTE as-needed. Similar to insurance, you may not use it all the time but when you do need it, it's very helpful.Good to know having the luxury of LTE on the go a few times a year is worth the extra $20 a month or so. To the vast majority it is not and tethering will more than suffice. To say it is a necessity and not a luxury is pure ignorance.
Edit: Missed the comment about it being a necessity. Yeah, it's definitely a luxury. Not necessarily one that costs $20/mo though.
