Is it just me that thinks Nokia needs a little more than re-designed old hardware to keep up with Apple, HTC and Samsung?

Whilst it looks like a nice phone, it doesn't offer much if anything over rival flagship devices.

It reminds me a lot of Nokia's old designs.

Not necessarily a bad thing, but maybe you're right they need to modernise a bit more.

And, no surprises here, the Verge hating on Windows Phone for no reason again. Is it that time of the day already?

I loved the N95. Easily the best Symbian phone I've ever owned (and one of the best I have owned altogether to be honest).

I was expecting more from today, especially with all the PureView chatter we had coming up to the event.

A lot of people are identifying Windows Phone 8 as restrictive with 720p screen limitations and such but I can't imagine a 1080p screen would have bought much more to the device.

Pity we didn't see some N8 style colour options.

Yeah I loved Nokia's N series phones back in the day. They were the Android phones of their time.

If they're putting the emphasis on the phone having a very good camera, a 1080p screen might have been nice. Still, not exactly a major oversight.

Clearly the best windows phone, and I'm sure the camera will be astounding. I'm even fine with the older processor (though wish it would've been a Snapdragon 400) and lower-res screen, but not with Windows Phone. It's a decently promising platform with probably the best home screen of any, yet the app scene is really dragging it down, and I think they overdid it with Metro and threw all visual flair out the window. It looks really boring to me now.

Consequence of MS being so slow about iterating WP8. Nokia can only do what you said, rebadge old hardware to try and keep pace with the market. Its sad and pathetic to see but thats usually what getting in bed with Microsoft gets you. Lots of promises but no delivery...thus leaving you with blue balls.

Not crazy about the design. Tech sites like the Verge were hyping this all metal design when in reality it's just an aluminum band around a plastic back and glass front. Probably would have looked better if they left it all plastic. And maybe as thick as the camera so there wouldn't be a hump in the back.

I have to agree, I was really excited about this device but "all aluminum" turned into "aluminum chassis with a 4S-esque band." I actually prefer the 920's full, matte polycarbonite to this. The 928 had promise (being a thinner/lighter 920) but of course Verizon had to "VZWify" the design and turn it into a rectangular box of hideous.

I want Nokia to succeed so badly, but it's like they're TRYING to fail.

EDIT: Just saw the black variant on the Verge (had only seen the silver/gray/white versions on other blogs) - I could get behind one of those. I look forward to NOT getting this on Verizon!

Yup. First time I spent $$$$ on a smartphone. It was truly ahead of everyone else at the time.

same here. It was waaayyy ahead of everyone else. The price was just insane, and it was never advertised in the US.

Yup. I remember looking at the spec sheet and going DAMN at that point.

5 mp Zeiss camera, GPS, stereo speakers, A2DP, dual slider, etc. Nothing came close.

back on topic, Nokia has gotten so lame. They were spec sheet kings. Now they're sold their soul to Microsoft and make mediocre devices.

well they probably got a lot of money from them, so they are not regretting it.

The previous ones looked better, the cover was more uniform and felt pretty good in the hand too. I don't see aluminum being the material to aim for - plastic can be just fine when done right (which Samsung doesn't do IMO). The Lumias have generally felt good in the hand and have been a good size. Their main drawback is Windows Phone, which in my experience is dreadful for both the user and developer.

Reason for the redesign is each phone is exclusive to a carrier. Here in the US:
920 = AT&T only
928 = Verizon only, which I wish they had months back because I would've picked it over the 8X
925 = T-Mobile only

Anyway this helps Nokia a lot. The 920 was the best WP8 phone on the market but limited to one carrier. Every other carrier the choice ended up being between an 8X and a midrange/budget Lumia. Nokia's sales should go up once those phones hit the market.

I'm still waiting for that Nokia EOS though

I like it. And I've had a soft spot for Windows Phone since the dawn of Metro. This is Nokia doing what they've always been good at: great industrial design. As for Windows Phone, it becomes a stronger contender by the day, and it's a strong enterprise OS, thanks to Exchange's dominance.

It's sad that Microsoft ducked out of The Mobile OS market for a while. My HTC TyTn was a great mobile phone for work.

Seems to me the tech sites drool over anything that has any bit of metal on it. The HTC One and iPhone 5 are beautiful phones. This one, IMO, is not. Just because it uses an aluminum band doesn't make it beautiful. I do wish the tech sites would quite calling it an aluminum or metal unibody phone when the back of the phone is plastic. The colored Lumia plastic phones are really nice. This looks a bit unfinished, like a prototype not quite ready for prime time.

That pretty much sums it up. It's the first Windows Phone that's actually somewhat attractive to me, but it is launched with subpar specs at a less ideal time. Within 6 months you'll likely see quad core, better GPU and and 1080p screens on Windows Phone, when MS launch their update later in Q4.

Agreed, mostly. The Lumina is still quite attractive to me though. I worry that it'll feel disjointed between all other devices though. That's how I felt with my Droid.

What size is the camera? I remember seeing a couple of early reviews that said the low light performance trounced the HTC One, which is no easy feat. If it had higher megapixels and had the low light performance I might be tempted to get one just on that alone.

Camera is 8.7 megapixels. It's above average in low light.

But if you want the ultimate low light smartphone camera, wait for the Nokia EOS. Same tech as in the 808 Pureview - 41 Megapixels and all

it does looks dated. but only the sides is aluminium, I've been spoiled with apple offering, if it's not all glass or aluminium, won't have interest to look.

the only interest for me right now is the HTC one.
