Anyone with newer M1 iMac’s have this problem? Can’t say I can hear it on mine tbh, maybe room too noisy, not sure.

If you go near the ports do you hear a buzz? Then you would probably hear it in a quiet room too. In a noisy room, no way.

I read elsewhere of people with just built iMacs which still have it, but I would love to be wrong

So, it looks like mine is getting worse over time. I'm editing some videos on iMovie and it's crazy how much it whines when I'm just hovering over the strip now, it wasn't like this some months ago. It also seems to whine more toward the left side, not much on the right side where the ports are

Is this at a certain brightness or anything? If was this bad and noticeable, I would take to an Apple store and show them. So you have AppleCare? Or even record it and go on Apple chat to see what they say.

If there is a specific way to test I’m going to as well.

Yeah in these cases brightness doesn't matter. Just make a iMovie project, move a video in the strip down and hear if it does any sound when caching it or you're moving the cursor over it. It also does it on some websites (like reddit when it blurs nsfw image posts in javascript). Like, when you go here: https://context.reverso.net/traduzione/italiano-inglese/auto do you hear a tickling buzz suddenly appearing?

Is this the noise you’re getting?

That sounds like a different issue - ? My M1 iMac has the whine noise but to be honest I haven't noticed it for months. I don't know if something has changed or I've just failed to notice (it was only noticeable in the still of night), but it certainly hasn't got worse.

I don't use iMovie.

Yeah, mine has the white noise too, I don't notice it much. Do you also hear the chirping noise on the context.reverso page?

If you don't use iMovie/Photoshop you'll probably only ever get the subtle white noise. I hear stronger whine in some websites (like when hovering in some video previews, not YouTube though), so it's hard to pinpoint the source of the problem

I hadn't tried before but yes, if I go to that page I can hear a sort of 'chirp-chirp-chirp-chirp-chirp-chirp-chirp-chirp-chirp-chirp-chirp-chirp-chirp' noise that seems to come in sets. It is different from the screen brightness noise which I can't hear at all right now (on just under 50% brightness).

I remember on my 2010 iMac I used to hear noise from the screen on certain webpages, so I would say that is not unique to the M1s.

SOLUTION

A solution for this is to set the brightness to max so the buzzing is not present. Then use software to adjust brightness (e.g. the app Shade).

I just replaced my device and the issue still !!
Thanks for letting us know. As I suspected, the "problem" is present and will always be present on all iMacs (and other Macs). By swapping a device you only incur in other possible issues (dead pixels, uneven screen, out of focus camera etc.)

What app do you recommend because the above now is not working? thank you
Try QuickShade. That's what I'm using and it works fine. Main display brightness set to max and then QuickShade has a little slider at the top right of your screen.

Consider that with those programs it's possible you lose a bit of color accuracy. I'm a graphic designer and I can't trust what I see when using those programs. But for everything else is fine, you are consuming more energy of course. Luckily I can only hear the whine at night in complete silence. And my Ikea Smart bulbs whine even more anyway

It will be interesting to see if they quietly fix this when they release the M3 version.

Wow, I’m happy my launch day M1 iMac has no buzz at all at any brightness - from the computer. The PSU buzzes like crazy when the machine is in sleep mode though. I have the PSU shoved under my desk wrapped in a towel to cut the noise.

I hope apple will fix this in next software update bec I think its a software issue?

what do you think guys if we resetting smc ?
I reset the SMC every day (I unplug all my electronics at night and that's how you reset the SMC in the iMac). It doesn't change a thing. Alas it's a physical, very common problem. All Playstation 5s do too
