Everyone seems to be recommending buying the M1 iPad Pro for $200 off at Amazon instead of paying full price for the M2 iPad Pro. I get the desire to not spend for something you don't need but is it really that advantageous?
I suspect that the M2 iPad Pro can be had for $100 off by Thanksgiving Black Friday sale. Combine that with the probable higher resale/trade-in value of the M2 vs the M1 and that $200 advantage disappears. I would bet you would get $80-$100 more for an M2 than an M1 come 2024 when we all want to upgrade to M3/OLED/new design.

I have the 2018 12.9" iPP and while I am not planning on upgrading, I'm also not looking forward to another 18 months with an iPad that is already sitting at 689 battery cycles. If the M2 Pro gets discounted early, I would consider purchasing. If the M1 Pro goes even lower than $200 off, I would also consider.

If I was a betting guy, I would bet that you will NOT see any sales on the M2 iPP this holiday season.

No one knows what discounts the future will hold. So if your gut is telling you the M2 later on will be a better deal then go with it. It's your money. You certainly don't want to take advice from some internet rando (me!) who thinks that both M1 and M2 iPad Pros are overrated and overpriced. 😄

Depends on how soon you need an iPad upgrade. The M2 will go on sale eventually. Probably not this holiday season, though.

I don't think the M2 will fetch $200 higher in trade-in/resale than M1 by the time the next iPP is released. I'm expecting just around $100 or so difference. The longer one keeps their iPads, the gap in trade-in value drops as well.

Personally, I have no plans of upgrading in 2024. These things have gotten too expensive to be upgrading every generation.

This isn't a joke - if I can get for $200+ off each generation - and I'm an 11" user; do not buy keyboard case etc. - that means that every ~4 generations I get one "free" (not really).

But I can't justifying buying full price every time - and as posted elsewhere (I think), I know someone who had an absolutely fully loaded 2021 iPad Pro 12.9" 2TB w/ Smart Keyboard case swiped from an airplane. Oh, and he had AppleCare+, and hadn't turned on "notify when left behind" because it just came out...

That's $2400+, which is 3x what I spent.

I just got the M1 for $325 off at Costco. $50 normal reduction + $200 off sale + $75 off if spending over $500
That extra $75 off (online orders only) is what did it for me. I was waiting for the M2 and though pencil hover is kinda neat and the speed is a decent bump in graphics, the savings on the M1 (512 version for me) was a better option.

I don't mind paying full price if it's something I need ASAP. That was the case for me in 2021 since I badly wanted to upgrade from my crash-prone, needed to be restart 2-3x a day 2017 iPP. I would've upgraded in 2020 but ended up delaying since the 2020 iPP was just a rehash of the 2018.

Ouch. My M1 iPad Pro 12.9 (1TB 5G) was $2200+ including tax so I can kinda relate. No Smart Keyboard though. Granted, I haven't had the chance to travel by plane recently.

Refurb market is another option. A few days ago Amazon had the M1 12.9 512GB cellular for $985 and the 1TB cellular for $1059. I grabbed one...all good so far.

Yeah. Alas I only trust Apple certified refurbs even if they cost a bit more.

If I could've waited until this year (or next depending on when Apple starts selling M1 iPP refurbs), I would definitely go for Apple refurb M1 iPP over the M2. They've historically had great pricing on those especially at higher configurations (e.g. 1TB cellular).

As it is, it didn't make sense to me to spend $1300-1400 (with tax) on a refurb 2018 iPad Pro last year only to spend another $1300-1400 to upgrade to a refurb 2021 iPad Pro this year.

So after I wrote this i noodled on it a bit more and convinced myself that I didn’t want to spring $1400 for an M2 iPad Pro to replace my 2018 iPad Pro. I really want some kinda of upgrade but didn’t want to pay a ton for it - 2024 for the OLED M3 version is a long time to wait.
Yesterday, I pulled the trigger on the $845 2021 IPP refurb from Amazon. A much cheaper option than $250 off a new 2021 that Amazon offers. I am totally skeptical of refurb but at least it‘s 100% returnable if it doesn’t come as advertised. Most of the review complain about the cheap charger or cable that comes with it but I don’t care about those. I am most concerned about getting a unit that was returned for faulty display or getting a unit that has the cellular IMEI blacklisted (that has happened to me before). I’lll check it out carefully when it arrives and decide whether or not to keep it. I am looking forward to the bump from 4gb RAM to 8gb RAM the most and battery that doesn’t have a gazillion cycles on it.

AppleCare+ for the save.

Honestly unless it's some crazy deal like the MacBook Pro 14 being 400+ off I cant see myself getting the 12.9 M1 iPad Pro. Im pretty sure next years model will have a redesign and might come out with bigger screen sizes.

They won't last long if your contemplating it.....😬
Amazon UK M1 went to retail price when M2 was released (maybe £50 off tops).

Stock today is running thin, mainly WiFi and cellular or WiFi 512gb and above only left.

Amazon has the one I was looking at (12.9", 256GB, cellular) for $250 off the $1399 list price now - up from $200 the other day.

So I got my 2021 refurb iPad Pro (12.9", 256GB, Cellular) from Amazon yesterday. I was amazed to find that the unit appears to be completely new - no signs of any use and the battery cycle count was 2. I got it all setup and tested speakers, cameras, flash, bluetooth, wifi and everything appears perfect. Did a deep inspection of the screen and no hot spots, lines, or any other anomaly. Also got the cellular activated (T-Mobile) so it wasn't on any blacklist.
Overall really happy I went this route and only spent $848 compared to the $1149 that the new one costs. Also a great alternative to spending $1399 for M2 version.

Keeping this going, just because I am interested in getting people's thoughts. I am buying an ipad pro sometime in the next month. Waited for the M2 and am a little underwhelmed. I get money through my job for the ipad, so I am trying to decide between using ~1/2 my budget on a 12.9 M1 or an 11 M2. Not sure I want to use 75% of my budget on a 12.9 M2. Thoughts?

Unless you need the max power from an M2, an M1 is still a massive leap from previous models.
As I have mentioned earlier, in the UK supplies are pretty much gone unless you want 1TB or 2TB models.

Amazon and most other high street retailers, stock has vanished quickly.

If it were me, I'd go for the latest from a future-proofing aspect, but it's also because I don't upgrade every year like some of the enthusiasts here. I'm going from 2018 A12X to 2022 M2, and that was a nice leap.
