they do allow free trials, but not many apps take advantage of it...
Thanks, this totally slipped by me. I read up a little bit and supposedly this change was a kind of half assed effort though. Basically, developers had already found a sort of workaround to simulate free trials before, and now (since 2018 I think) Apple allows it officially, but the workaround still has significant issues that don’t make it as beneficial as traditional free trials. I’m assuming that’s why many apps haven’t taken advantage of it. Looks like most of the issues apply to the upfront paid apps, and subscription paid apps have none or less of these issues, not sure.
Hopefully, the issues can be ironed out.

I sometime wonder what would have happened if the iPad was released before the iPhone. Instead of people being unimpressed that the iPad is like a big phone, they might be amazed the iPhone is like a small iPad.
I was one of the people who ordered the Gen 1 iPad on the first day of pre-orders. Owning one that early was interesting. People tried to make sense of it by comparing it to devices they were familiar with. Some comparisons I heard were “it’s like a big PDA” or “it’s like a big ebook reader”. The most common comparison was “it’s a big iPhone!”, with an exclamation point. Most of the people I encountered were actually excited about the idea of a big iPhone, even while the pundits online were dismissing it as a big iPhone.

I bought the first iPad too-- I don't think I ordered on day 1, but I do remember coming across a demo unit at my university bookstore and it had one of those stargazing apps that used the included sensors to show you the constellations and stars you were looking at.... and it was magical. There was something fundamentally different from either a phone/iPod touch or a laptop in how you experienced it and interacted with it. (of course, phone screens were quite a bit smaller then in 2010).
