Today I was using my 11" M1 iPad Pro for reading news and watching videos when it started to feel warm and I got a warning screen that it was too hot and I could not use it until it cooled down. Granted, it was a rather warm day (31c), using it outside in an area partially exposed to the sun and the iPad had a thin case on it. I had used my 10.5 Pro under similar conditions and did not ever have a problem. It seemed kind of unusual given the relatively mild use and conditions. Has anybody else had a similar experience?

The thinner chassis results in less heat dissipation.

The difference is the 11" is running a more powerful cpu/gpu, and as noted above, the case is rather slim and if you're in the sun, it won't take long for it to over heat

My 2021 12.9 got warm but did not overheat outside in direct sunlight today (though only 68F). Had display at 100% brightness with a case on it and it seemed no different than my 2018 12.9 under similar conditions.

Partially exposed under an awning. I used to take my 10.5 to the beach and never had any heat issues in the past
Comparing two different products. If you think it’s faulty then contact Apple; otherwise, you have to live with it or return it.

If this happens in the shade, speak with apple. The operating temperatures for iPads are:

Operating ambient temperature:
0° to 35° C (32° to 95° F)

It cooled down later. I am guessing that all the extra M1 power makes it run hotter. Some regret here in that the 10.5 seemed a bit more efficient for running basic activities like video and web browsing. I just wanted to confirm that the hot running is considered normal. Beware the tradeoff of all that power!

I hope this isn’t too far off topic, but does anyone else notice just how aggressively the forum kills your device’s battery? Is it all the annoying ads?

I was having issues with screen brightness dimming because of the thermals since I had auto-brightness disabled on my 12.9”, but once I turned auto-brightness on and kept it at max brightness it hasn’t done it ever since. I actually sent my first iPad Pro back because of the issue since I thought it was a defect, but I was so, so wrong.

Isn't the M1 supposed to run cooler?

I think the thermal headroom went into improving performance.

At full throttle, it needs fans to maintain peak performance (M1 MacBook Pro, Mac mini and iMac). Not to the same extent as Intel but it's not just designed for purely fanless anymore.

Since this incident, I have been paying more attention to the temps in cool rooms and I definitely think the M1 runs hotter. Nothing scientific, but just anecdotal observation at this point.

I'm sure there are probably some controlled tests out there.

It’s not, but it has a more powerful SOC in it,is the heat causing issues? Or just feels hotter?

I would say that simply my 10.5 never felt hot no matter how I was using it. With the M1, you can definitely notice it in extreme conditons.
