M1 MacBook Air: External display not recognized after waking from sleep

My fix was plugging in my MacBook Air with power. Running off USBC power from the monitor was causing the issue.
 
i woke up today to my m1 mbp not detecting my second monitor. i tried the sleep thing, detect displays, restart etc. whats the fix?
