I'm very tempted to upgrade form my 2019 13" intel MBP. I'm not a "pro" user, I would mainly need it for teleworking and travel, but the extra ports, magsafe, screen real estate and especially the purported cooler running of the M1 MBPs are making me jealous, as my MBP runs very hot and is nearly unusable when working and constantly switching out dongles is also annoying. Probably should have just returned it back when but I was lazy. Between Black Friday and a trade in, if I can shave maybe $700 off the list price I think I'll go for it.

It definitely *doesn’t* have 4 ports.

Regarding the bold bit, that’s also true of the Air.

The 2017-2019 Intel 13” MBP has 4 TB ports, I think the M1 ‘20 mode does as well. Yet none have an individual Thunderbolt controller/chip so each 2 ports uses 1 controller/chip and thus spreads the data rate between the two thus 20gb/sec when 2 ports are connected to TB devices. This is NOT Ideal at all.

Again, no.

Sorry the ‘2.0 MBP M1 has 4 TB ports. Ports. Yet only 2 controllers so when 2 ports on the same side is used it’s bandwidth per each port used per side (again 2 ports used at same time same side) bandwidth per port is 20gb/s.
I don’t know why you’re insisting on arguing this point, but you’re just wrong. The 2020 13” M1 MBP has two ports. Two.

I have a 13" MBP M1 on my desk and trust me, it has 2 TB ports. You are confusing it with its Intel predecessor, where you had a 2 port and a 4 port model.

If the 13 pro is sufficient the 13 air is better all around. Similar performance at much slicker size and shape. If u need performance new 14 is obviously better.

The 13 pro is a stopgap imo. Air was better on release day.

I'm sure they are. Apple actually list two 2020 MBP models as being released that, one being the M1 and the other Intel. The Intel offered 2 & 4 port configs while the M1 only offered 2.

Basically you can't say 2020 MBP and know what someone is talking about because there were two that gen.

Yeah, speed and performance is a non-factor for me (non-Pro). Single core performance is practically the same.

I've been working from home and expect to WFH for another 6 months. Even when returning to the office, I don't expect to take my MBP with me. I have the iPad Pro 11 for that. So the M1 MBP has been sitting on my desk for 85% of the time, and when it's on my desk, it's used as a secondary monitor as it is connected to my external display 90% of that time. The other 15% of the time, I take the MBP to my bedroom or living room and the remaining 5% involve irregular visits to friends, family and coffee shops.

So while the battery life is a key factor, in my use case, it may not be a big factor, nor is the added thickness and weight of the new 14 and 16, so my reasons for upgrading are really for the (1) better screen tech (ProMotion/Resolution/Mini-LED), (2) larger screen size, (3) return of the hard function keys, (4) return of the ports, (5) better speakers, (6) support for multiple monitors, (7) HiDPI/better scaling on my LG 34 inch 5K2K.

(1) is amazing, and with the 16, it's so large and immersive, I love it. I'll probably use this more around the house so having the extra battery on tap is a major plus. Regarding (2) the 14 is great too but the smaller screen size feels wasteful given the great screen tech. I also think between the M1 MBP and 14, there's a marginal difference in screen size. Upgrading from 13 inches to 14 inches doesn't make sense, despite the better screen tech. 16 feels much more like an upgrade.

(3) The touch-bar is useless for me so I am very happy to see hard function keys, plus these keys are the same size as the rest of the keyboard.

(4) The HDMI is useless. It's nice to have 1 more TB port than my version of the M1 MBP, I especially like having it on both sides of the laptop. Initially I was indifferent on the SD card slot but I intend to use it for additional storage space for random files. Just need to wait for a flush SD card to come out for these new MBPs. Return of the MagSafe is nice and will be used primarily when I'm not at my desk. It'll be a perfect charger when I use it in my bed.

(5) the speakers on these 14/16 are amazing, I'm pretty blown away and I probably will use my air pods a lot less.

(6) If I go with the 16, I don't think I'lll ever need another external display as my 34 inch ultra wide is plenty for me, but it's a nice to have in case that ever changes.

(7) the scaling and resolution on my external display that's supported by the M1 MBP is perfectly fine, but the 14/16 unlocks better scaling options giving me more screen real estate.

having said all this, I'm still undecided, but if I decide to leave my M1 MBP, I will be leaving it for the 16
Agree 100%

Anyone holding out for this rumored 13 mbp with the m2?

I read that there will be no redesign, but hoping maybe the slip in 2 extra ports like the i models had.

Almost ready to commit to the 13 mbp m1 because I don't need the pro 14" / 16". (Would like the 14" but not at that price).

In my opinion, they will likely redesign at least a little bit. Update will probably keep two ports, but add MagSafe, so effectively “adding” one port for non-charging.

It makes all the sense in the world to combine the 13” MBP and MBA into one new/redesign product to release the M2. I expect that to happen this fall after the rest of the Mac lineup has moved away from Intel. And, honestly, I would probably still land on the current 13” MBP or MBA for personal use because of the price point combined with the stellar performance.

I sold my M1 MBP 2020 13" before the release of the new 14" and 16" to maximize the value I would get selling it. It was the right choice for me. I upgraded to the 16" MBP M1 Max and could not be happier. Best MBP in a long time!!

Upgraded to a 16 inch M1 Pro base model and so far, I am in love.

I had the 15 inch Retina from 2013 until 2020 and upgraded to a 13 inch Macbook Pro with touchbar (the 2020 version) in early 2020. I was expecting an M1 Pro, but wanted a bit of an update to the Retina, which was showing its age at the time. The 13 inch was a great computer, as was the Retina. I decided to wait for the rumored redesign with a slightly updated M1 chip- thus the M1 Pro and M1 Max. I loved the portability of the 13 inch the best. I was going to grab the 14 inch M1 Pro, considering the portability. But when I saw the reviews praising the battery life on the 16 inch and then thought about screen real-estate, I jumped on the 16 inch when Amazon had the sale this past weekend. Thus far, I'm not disappointed. The screen is incredible. The battery life hasn't dipped below 70% yet despite using it for modest internet surfing earlier. What fans? Oh and the laptop has been the same temperature since I opened it. Very impressed, and I probably will stick with this for the next handful of years.

I feel like Apple will probably introduce a "new" Macbook in March- a cross between the 13 inch pro and the air. No touchbar and little redesign with the M2 chip- like rumored.

Do you think the 14 n 16” will go down in thickness as time progresses in the new few years or will this design be kept for while. Perhaps less weight maybe over time on components.

I doubt it will really become much thinner just because they added the ports back into it. HDMI ports are too wide to really taper off the sides like they do on the 13" models. And as much as I love the thinness of the 13", I do think that adding a few ports back in was probably a welcome change for the higher end models.

I wouldn't be surprised if they do manage to cram the Air into an even smaller form factor though. The ports aren't really holding the 13" models back from becoming even thinner than they are now.

If Apple sticks to crappy 2 TB ports, I will keep my 13“ 2020 Intel MBP. There is no reason why computers in 2022 only have 2 ports, and 1 of them is for charging even.
