I think it would be hard to do my job (IT development & design, cloud infrastructure management) without *a lot* of reading and research, and my "approach" is to get lots of data sources in order the understand the context of a problem.
I used to work in very similar roles before transitioning into more senior management roles where I was "off the tools" so to speak so I totally appreciate how much research and planning etc is involved. I too wasn't judging, I was more just shocked I guess! ?

But then I'm the type of person who keeps their OS desktop as absolutely clear of clutter as possible. I have a directory designated to the project(s) I am currently working on at that exact time and then subdirectories below that as required. When I move onto something new, the directory gets moved from the desktop and archived somewhere. NOTHING else is ever on my desktop! Now that I have typed this out, reading it back I feel like im the crazy one! ?

I don't have a problem with my desktop - just my browser :)

All my work project hierarchies are in a combination of DropBox, Google Docs (via FileStream) and MS OneDrive for Business.

Couple of related points on cloud storage on the new Macs:

1) Google Filestream (which syncs Google gSuite docs to desktop) apparently doesn't work on the M1, and can't use Rosetta because it uses a kext, which is upsetting a lot of people!

2) MS OneDrive is as awful for sync speed and responsiveness as it was on Intel MacOS....takes <minutes> to login and start syncing, becomes unresponsive often, and is really slow to sync. I use it for archiving only.

3) DropBox works very well as usual on the M1, but I was put off by their pricing model (they force you to have 2TB at an inflated price compared to their competitors), so I only use the free-tier for my current projects.

No offence taken!

The job also involves team working, task management and documentation, so I have to work with multiple systems every day on lots of different sub-tasks. It all leads to a lot of data, and if I had to find, open, search, read & close every time I needed some information, it would take longer (at least I think so!)

I'm actually not a great multi-tasker, so this is quite a mental overhead, and I love the idea of being able to focus on just one task, in one window :) I guess I'm in the wrong job for that!

i hear ya, i use to do scientific research and had around 20 windows open from just the resources lol

You are not alone. I have absolutely no icons on my personal computer desktops, and the only reason I have icons on my work Windows desktop is because I don't have enough access to delete them.

I also move stuff from my Inbox to a folder, both for personal and work email, once I don't need to immediately do something about it.

But I absolutely respect that others need or want multiple tabs open and lots of stuff on their desktops. We all work the way that makes sense to us and makes each of us efficient and happy. :)
