I am having following issues with the 3 days old M1 Max 16 Inch

1) I am only getting 600/700mbps download speed via ethernet port in thunderbolt dock instead of 1gbps. i have 1gbps data connection. apple support says it is a problem with third party thunderbolt dock. whereas i am getting max speed in windows/linux with the same dock. the ethernet chipset realtek 8153

2) When the thunderbolt dock is connected and when i restart the m1 max the magsafe led stays amber even though battery is fully charged. Disconnecting and reconnecting the magsafe turns the led to green.

3) Activity Monitor is starting up slowing. It takes 4 to 8 seconds to show up the contents. Even in safe mode it is the same. Apple support says this is normal. In the intel and m1 macs i had it was immediate

I tried erasing and reinstalling the monterey and it did not help out fixing the above mentioned problem.

Please share your experience. So that i can make a decision on sending back the mac to apple for exchange/refund.

Thank You

1 - What dock are you using? Any other devices connected to the dock at the time you test it?

2- Contact Apple support. There are incidents about this and some people get their macbook replaced.

3- My Activity Monitor shows up in 2 seconds. My other machines do the same (a hackintosh, M1 Mac Mini, iMac Pro, Mac Pro, and a 2015 MacBook Pro).

1 - What dock are you using? Any other devices connected to the dock at the time you test it?
The dock what i am using is Amazon Basics Thunderbolt Dock
https://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B086HDTJ4W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Connected Devices to Thunderbolt Dock
1) LG 4k Monitor
2) Youbikey
3) TEKQ Thunderbolt 1 TB SSD
4) Ethernet to Switch -> Router -> ISP Router
2- Contact Apple support. There are incidents about this and some people get their macbook replaced.

Apple is willing to do the replacement or refund. there is no issue in that. But i would like to know whether it is really needed. Because i need to wait 40 days to get the replacement.

3- My Activity Monitor shows up in 2 seconds. My other machines do the same (a hackintosh, M1 Mac Mini, iMac Pro, Mac Pro, and a 2015 MacBook Pro).

I do have some problem then in my m1 max.

Thank you for sharing the details.

1- That dock runs really hot, make sure it won't throttle when you run the test.
The max thunderbolt bandwidth is 40Gbps. In real world, it's about 35Gbps, so let's do a little math here:
LG 4K, I assume it's 60hz SDR, so it used up half of the bandwidth at 15-16Gbps. If it's 4K 144hz with HDR, then say bye bye to 35.83 Gbps.
Thunderbolt SSD needs at least 17.2 Gbps, so you have very little left for your ethernet ports.
I'm not sure if it's Monterey to blame or the Amazon basic to blame.
I personally run OWC thunderbolt dock + Razer dock. Both give me full Internet speed at 1Gbps (935Mbps, but that's my internet ISP to blame)

2- Not really needed if it doesn't bother your work. Tell Apple to send you one then once it arrives, you get to send it back to Apple. They will place a hold on your credit card. That way it won't disrupt your work.

3- What's your software config ? Try to Wipe it clean using recovery mode then reinstall Monterey. That speeds up a lot of things for my M1 Max.

I tried just connecting only ethernet to dock and it does not max out. this person also faced the same problem as mine https://discussions.apple.com/thread/253395967

I need to try other docks. But this amazon dock run quite well with windows/linux without any issues. It does not get very hot. It just gets warmer.

i should give a try.

This is what i tried first hand. It does not help. The problem happens with fresh install of monterey without installing any applications.

do you get this issue?

the ethernet chipset realtek 8153
This is a sad chip choice for a Thunderbolt dock. This is basically a USB based NIC chip and can be slow. Use a PCIe based NIC and you will even be able to get 10Gbit line rate. My Caldigit TS3 is using an Intel I210 and does not suffer from speed problem.

Not to state the obvious, but to suggest in the general direction:

1. How is the download speed without the dock?
2. How is that Apple's fault, again, when the dock is third-party?
3. That is normal. It takes time to populate. It may be a bug right now, but a software bug.

None of this is ground to return the machine.

I am getting 940mbps without dock(using usb dongle with the same realtek 8153 chipset). In wireless max 830mbps
2. How is that Apple's fault, again, when the dock is third-party?

This is monterey driver issue. people are having issue with realtek based ethernet dongle from big sur to monterey. having disconnect issue(in both intel and m1). it seems to be fixed in 12.0.1. but introduced speed capping issue for this realtek chipset when it is present in thunderbolt dock. the same gives max speed in windows and linux. the driver is supplied by apple. Am i missing something?

Driver: com.apple.DriverKit.AppleUserECM.

even i though of so. but i dont have this issue with the other macs i have. and other fellows not complaining about this.

Thats why i am sharing in social media to know about others experience to know whether they are facing the same issues like me. so that i can make a right decision.

1. If this is on the Mac, with the same chipset, this should point that the fault might lie with the dock. Frankly, compatibility with third parties is just that - a hit and miss - sometimes.

2. I am thinking if this is a Monterey driver issue, how is it that the same chipset dongle gives better speeds?

3. Activity Monitor was populated immediately on my Intel MacBook Air 2017 with Monterey 12.1 betas. Leads me to think this is a bug in Monterey on Apple Silicon. Nothing show-stopping, at least to me.

This is not only with dock the ethernet port on the monitor

U4021QW

has also the same problem.

So this is not very specific to the dock what i am mentioning here.

I also tried 12.1 beta it did not fix the problem. pity on me and the gear i got. :)

Thank you for sharing your experience with me. It really helps in making the decision.

I don't have this issue at all. The MagSafe works just fine for me.
In regard of the ethernet speed, I suggest you either get a dedicated ethernet adapter and plug it into the dock. I'm running a 10 Gigabit Ethernet adapter through my thunderbolt hub OR try out new docks to see if this continues. I think there's something really wrong with your MacBook.

On another thought, I think anything that's not running off thunderbolt bus on the M1 Pro/Max will get their speed slow down a bit compared to other window systems. Monterey is to be blamed.

I've noticed Activity Monitor is slow to populate, M1 Max 16" 64GB, 12.0.1. Takes a good five seconds.

10 Gb. I wish i could have for my local network. But i cant think of that infra setup. (router, cabling, nas etc etc i need to upgrade costs fortune to me). i have already placed an order for anker dock to try.

Could it be your USB-Hub (or like) chip in your dock/monitor capping your speed, not the 8153 itself then?

I cant take a wild guess. Only apple can answer this. They have come up with an incredible top performing machine. Finding answer for this is not a big task for them. I am just a consumer and dont know the os and hardware level details.

Switched to using ethernet usb dongle directly connected to m1 max tb port and i had a first kernel panic during sleep.

Try resetting your SMC. By the way, looks like the driver is f$Cked up. That’s Monterey to blame

FYI M1 macs does not have smc. I contacted apple about this and they told me to revive the firmware. Does anyone know whether i can revive using mbp mid 2014 since thats the spare one i have. Or can i use hackintosh to revive apple m1. In which way reviving makes difference than erasing and reinstalling from recovery or usb disk?

Thanks

I mean the firmware controller. Old habit of the old age. You can use recovery mode, revive from the internet image. I heard that’s possible
You can use hackintosh if your build is using open core.
Revive leave the hdd alone and target only the firmware.

I did that already from recovery mode. The only thing i need to try is put the m1 mac in dfu mode and revive/restore ipsw as we do for iphones and ipad.

Update:

I just revived the firmware using 2014 mbp using usba usbc cable and the keernel panic on sleep is stopped happening.

But all other problems remains the same.

as and when i would like to check the processes and memory when i am doing some heavy multi threaded tasks to make sure that the processes are exited when it is finished. in addition to the slow updating i am getting beach balls in activity monitor window and it is becoming unresponsive and i need to force quit. what a disaster.

I should get my max in about a week now (wishful thinking). CTO configurations takes time. I will test it myself. However, when I was playing with it in the store, it worked nice and fast. It might be some SW installed that is causing issues.
