There is however something slightly off about auto-brightness on the new M1s
Auto Br used to work very well on macs.
It seems to misbehave at times on the new M1 where it will suddenly get very dim even with a minor drip in the ambient light and require manual adjustment.

I have never had a need to disable Auto Br on erstwhile macs until now.

Hopefully (and very likely) a minor software glitch that gets fixed in the next OS release cycle
I have been having this same issue with my new M1 Mac. The screen brightness drops all the way down whenever I open the lid as well. It has been very annoying and I hope apple fixes it with the next update.

Just noting that I have everything "automatic" turned off and the brightness on my M1 MBP 13" keeps going down to 50% on its own. It's hurting my eyes because I don't notice right away. Kinda frustrating. I hope they find a fix for this soon.

Mine continues to have this issue. I already disabled auto brightness in Sys Preferences → Displays. It just has a mind of its own and keeps reducing the brightness to about 50%. It always defaults to that same level.
