I was waiting for the new 14'' M whatever Pro. However, I can get an M1 13'' MacBook Pro 8GB ram with 512gb ssd and Touch Bar for $1100 before tax. Should I do it? I will only need 1 extra screen on occasion. I think I want the Touch Bar (rumored to be leaving the new ones). I hate buying a machine with a rumored refresh around the corner (latest and greatest envy). However, budget is tight and we know the new one will start out at $1399 or $1799 (512gb) as always. Yes, there will be a speed increase on the processor and probably 2 extra USB-C. Is it really work the waiting and extra money?
idk but i love mine. Its beautiful. its 8 cores. Its going to last a while and handle about everything. If you want a touchbar buy one now,

Agreed and the M1 macs are very good and support a great deal of needs. Wait only if a larger laptop is required or significant higher needs beyond the M1.

Also, separate from that, your avatar is really great. +1 on that.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger. The more I thought about it, for my personal needs, the Air is more than adequate. The redesign is still several months away. If I need a beefier machine for work, then work can pay for it. So far it is quite snappy. Getting used to the chunkier bezels and smaller screen will take some time.

Excellent choice! I received a 13" m1 MBP 16/1TB as part of a tech refresh at work. It's incredible! I also had my lab equipped with 13" M1 Airs, and they are incredible as well. I could have easily used one as my daily driver. The Air impressed me enough that I picked up a base model for my wife to use for her new job.

She's also a portrait photographer, and for her style of batch editing that thrashes the internal drives on her machines, the M1 Air will likely suit her better than her 2019 iMac. I don't think there's any amount of RAM that can keep her from swapping.

Enjoy the new machine!

You can still work that out with an external screen if you use it for work for hours straight. Anyway, I think it will be harder to get used to white bezels and white keys rather than that if the colourful redesign is true.
