I can get student discount and I'm considering the Air M2 and the MBP 14". Two builds with 16GB RAM and 1TB compared, I'm thinking the MBP 14" is worth the extra £79 although I'd prefer a fanless machine for that silent life.

The M1 Pro is silent as long as you are not pushing it. There are threads here where people discuss the fans being off 70% or more of the time.

I guess as someone who is sensitive to PWM, the MBP 14 is out of the race for me.
Yeah, the issue here is looks like not the PWM itself, but its' frequency - usual M1 Airs/Pros do have 122000khz, while this one has 10 times less, meaning that PWM would be more obvious.

Glad I found this thread. I am torn, but not by much. With a 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM configuration, the Air is only $200 less than the base Pro. I had an original Unibody and I remember it being very heavy. Is that less than 1/2 lb difference considerable? Somehow I doubt it. I think I have convinced myself.

Get the 14" MBP. The MBA will throttle under any heavy/medium workloads due to being passively cooled.

I was waiting for M2 air release then bought MBP 14 on sale.
My wife thinks my new MBP looks "ugly and cheap like dell laptop" and I do kinda agree.
I dont know about cheap but it looks like white plastic MacBook in 2000's.
All in all, Im happy with the purchase.
I dont think the interest and intrigue will be the same with M2 MBA in 6 months time.

The new design is ugly. The post-unibody design is still rock solid and has a better platform.

I just bought a 14" MBP just recently, like 2 weeks, and I have no buyers remorse.

The MBP has this going for it.
Faster processor
Better GPU? (I'm not sure about this)
More ports
Better screen (larger, faster, brighter)
Better speakers
Active cooling

The MBA has this going for it
Slightly better battery performance.
The color blue
the number 2 is higher then 1 in the name (M2 > M1)

The size difference is only a loaf of bread, are you really worried about such a minor difference?

Bottom line is if you're unhappy with the MBP, sell it and buy the MBA.

I'm not down on the MBA, its an excellent computer but spec wise the 14" MBP Either the Pro or max variant beats the MBA in nearly every category. The MBA and the MBP are aimed at two difference customers and the MBP is a more capable laptop able to handle sustained loads and processes due to the inclusion of the fan
I second all of this. Very happy with my 14" MBP. Air is cool but I'm already benefiting from the extra ports, enjoying the superior speakers and screen, and got it for around $1950 (that's the final price, including tax) with over 2 years of AppleCare+ on it cuz I bought it used.

I think the M1 Pro chip is gonna last a while and the extra power it has will make future OS updates run that much better.

About to replace my 13” MBP (2016). Big doubt between the new MBA or the 14” MBP. I want it to last long. Most use is stationary, so weight is a minor issue. Most work done on a 32” external monitor, so screen is not that important. But HDMI without dongle is attractive. Usb-c on both sides is useful. I guess Microsoft Teams and Windows in a VirtualBox are the most challenging tasks for the system. At least they are now, because they always get the fan running.
Either will handle those things fine, likely without the fan running in most cases, although Teams is a POS software-wise obviously.

I'm personally enjoying the extra ports without dongle quite a bit. Much closer to my 2015 13" MBP in terms of connectivity. You can save money if you are cool with less RAM and less storage with the Air. But if you want more of those, the base MBP is hard to beat. You're only getting a slightly newer chip that still doesn't beat the M1 Pro in more sustained loads and in overall GPU power, so that helped me feel at peace with my decision. I also got a sweet sweet deal on a used 14" MBP that saved me like $600, and I got 2 years of AppleCare+, so I'm happy.

I was thinking between MBA M2 or MBP 14 , so I got my MBP 14 today

M2 Air with 16gb ram and 512 ssd cost $1579 ( Apple Education Store )
MBP 14 base ( 16 / 512 ) cost $1849 ( Apple Education Store )

different $270 , but you will get 120hz XDR display and little more screen .

I'm giving my M1 MacBook Air to my daughter who needs to replace her Intel-based MBA. I was going to get the M2 MacBook Air, but at the last minute (last night when on apple.com) decided on the 14" M1 Pro (10-core/16-core) MacBook Pro w/ 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD.

I thought about it for a while, and decided that, while the thinness and weight of the MBA are great, >95% of the time it's just sitting at a desk, connected to an external display and other peripherals. So the svelteness of the MBA goes to waste much of the time. One of my iPads usually accompanies me to work instead as I've got a nice multi-monitor workstation at the office.

Additionally, the built-in HDMI port would allow me to skip the USB-C adapter that I always have to make sure I've got with me when taking my laptop for presentations. One less thing to worry about.

And while most of my computing needs are actually well handled by the M1 MBA, there is a specialized medical imaging application that would benefit significantly from the horsepower of the 10-core CPU/16-core GPU M1 Pro chip.

Lastly, I felt that the M1 Pro's ability to support two external displays versus just one on the M1/M2 would be helpful as I'm thinking about replacing my one 32" 4K with two 27" 4K displays. I think two displays at (looks-like) 2560x1440 would be kinder to my 52 year old eyes than one 32" at 3008x1692. And the 120Hz mini-LED display on my 12.9" M1 iPad Pro is so nice, having it on my MacBook's display would be great!

So, ultimately, while the super thin M2 (in that oh so pretty Midnight Blue, btw) would have been nice, I think the M1 Pro has some benefits that I would enjoy and I'd really only be losing out on a slightly heaver machine that doesn't even get carried around that frequently.

OP, I'm not sure why you'd have buyer's remorse in this situation, unless weight and thickness are the only two things you care about in a notebook. The M1 Pro offers you:

--a nicer screen
--active cooling for sustained workload
--a faster processor, despite the lower version number
--the new chassis design
--better audio
--more ports
--more supported external displays

I'm sure I could think of others.

The M2 Air looks about how I thought it would look and performs about how I thought it would perform. It was actually going to be my next notebook, but I ended up going for the M1 Pro MBP instead. Even with that being the case though, I'm still planning on making a pilgrimage to the Apple store next week just to see one and see what it's like to interact with in person. The MacBook Pro design but slimmer and lighter? If I wasn't so spoiled by the M1 Pro and only cared about physical dimensions, I would be DYING for it to be July 15th right now. I think these things are going to sell very well.

Being fortunate enough to have both sizes (one work, one personal), I agree here, especially when it comes to the 14" model. It's noticeably slimmer and lighter than the 16" model, and not that much thicker than the M2 MBA (as far as I can tell from pictures so far). That's the one I bought for my own use, as I think it's the goldilocks size/weight/feature mix for me.

The 14 inch MBP is superior to the M2 MBA in every aspect except portability. Don't do it.

Its worth mentioning that there is more of a difference in thickness between the M2Air and 14"MBP than there is between the 14" and 16" MBPs. But there is more of a difference in weight between then M2 Air and 14" MBP than between the 14" and 16" MBPs.

Yes, for sure--this is why I really want to just go look at one just to see for myself. I would never trade my 14" MBP for the M2 MBA, but I just have to see this beauty up close.
