M1 Pro and Max owners with 14/16 inch MBP's, with the announcement of the new M4 Pro and M4 Max models do you feel the need to upgrade or are you happy with your M1 based model?

Anyone think its still too early to upgrade or hold out for M5?

Thoughts, comments?
I would *really* like to upgrade from my 16" M1P, but it depends heavily on the family CFO ;)
I normally run 2-3 32" 4k monitors from my MBP, but it's quit supporting 3 (the third is 1080p), and it's a heavy laptop, too big to use on a plane. I travel 3 months of the year, and hauling that thing around.... I'd like to go instead with a m4 mini, and a 15" Air (once they upgrade to M4.)

Well I’m staying with my base 14” M1 MBP (16/512) for at least next 5 years. :)
Same, I will stick with mine until I no longer receive updates that actually peak my interest. So even if the first MacOS that comes out that isn't available to this machine has new features that I really dont care too much about (like this latest MacOS), I'll continue to hold off. After that, I will probably go with a 15" Air, since I only upgraded from the M1 Air to the 16" M1 Pro MBP for screen size really (15" Air wasn't available at that time). The base M1 suited my power needs just fine. But now I miss how thin and light that machine was compared to the M1.

Honestly, depending how things progress with iPadOS and iPad battery life - I may not even replace with a Laptop. I may get a Mac mini for my desk, and switch to iPad exclusively while traveling and what not. As it is, my iPad goes with me around the house, and MBP stays in clamshell on my desk, but I still take the MBP when I leave home as my portable workstation - and sometimes the iPad to have even more portable screen real estate while traveling.

Anyhow - I've got some time to see how things play out, and I'll decide what the best move is in a few years when it becomes necessary.

Just kind of throwing this out there. And I do realize there are folks doing intensive tasks that would benefit from every bit of additional speed. Someone mentioned in this thread that the improvement in single core performance was massive. It is, at least in benchmarks. But for most of the things most of us do most of the time it's completely moot. I'm generally the bottleneck on my M1 Pro. It generally doesn't matter if internal processing is at the M1 speed, or is twice as fast. It has no practical significance. Things like screen size and quality, ability to drive external monitors, SSD size, etc. are of much more practical significance for a lot of users. Again, I know there are folks who really do benefit from the processing speed increases. But ...

I have MBP 14" M1 Pro base model and it pretty much does all I need. I mostly use it as desktop with external display and keyboard/mouse. I however wonder if hugely increased CPU single core performance would make programs loading and using noticeable more responsive? Like when using Safari and browsing web would it appear loading pages snappier?

Looks like just M4 is even about 50% faster in multicore but RAM speed is only 120GB/s vs 200GB/s in M1 Pro. In M4 Pro that is again much faster than in M1 Pro, so I'm also wondering if it would make sense to get MBP M4 Pro instead?

But first of all, I'm wondering if there is any sense to update yet at all...?
I'm just a basic user but "upgraditis" is getting bad. :)
I'm also wondering how long my current MBP 14" M1 Pro is getting new OS versions. Obviously no one knows this for sure but I was hoping M-series CPU would get longer support but it might not be wise for Apple to do so if people just keep using their old ones instead of buying new.

I upgrading my 14" M1Max MBP to 14" M4 Max MBP as well.

I am retiring at the end of the year and this will be the last upgrade with tax write off.
I will also be selling my Mac Studio M1 Ultra, and replace my desktop Mac needs with the MBP.
I am still considering what to do with my 2013 trashcan MacPro - might end up as a server after an upcoming move.

That being said, the MBP M1 Max is a great machine. Opportunity is now for me though.

I am upgrading from M1 Max but mostly to use that machine as an upgrade for my spouse (who has 13" 2019 Intel MBP). Without that need I'd probably wait another generation or two.

Still this is a pretty sizeable upgrade. I'm moving to M4 Pro 14" 48GB/2TB.
I was thinking of the 14 inch as well but learnt that the 14 inch cause the laptop performance to take a hit due to it smaller size.. it gets hotter faster and gets throttle down. That perfomance will take 15-30% hit when peforming some tasks. Still I would prefer the 14inch as easier to carry than the large 16 inch like a giant desktop when travelling for safaris or mountain expedition coming up. I am still debating.

I have an M2 with plenty of RAM so I am more than happy. My guess is that the M1 folks who will see real benefit from upgrading will be those who run apps like Blender that take advantage of hardware ray tracing, etc. specific to the newer chips. Or those folks who failed to put enough RAM in their M1 Macs.

I expect to be tempted after the AI-puberty period... around the M7 is my guestimate. By that time I'll probably get by with a Mac Micro... 🤭

I need more SSD space.

So, I am thinking of upgrading my 14" Base M1 Pro with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD to a 14" Base M4 (non-Pro) with 16 GB, but 1 TB SSD.

I am NOT gaming or doing demanding GPU tasks with my Mac, but love the 120 Hz display, the overall speed and responsiveness of the Mac with lots of apps opened, the solid form factor, and it would be very useful to me more battery life. The better camera would also a welcomed change.

I am NOT using the Thunderbolt ports. Probably I will connect an external 4K display sometimes, but not two or more.

So, I am waiting for benchmarks to compare the base 2021 M1 Pro to the base 2024 M4 Non-Pro.

Well they have pitched the increased RAM and M4 with Apple intelligence, which means the M5 will need another selling point next year....what could it be?

apple says that the macbook pro laptops 14"/16" with m4 pro/max processor do indeed have thunderbolt 5 ports. just the 14" with m4 (non pro) doesn't. see https://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs/
Thanks for your correction!

Macrumors is saying T-5 supported! My error was from Apple's ordering site, where I configured a Mac Pro and it listed the specifications, including only T-4 ports. I configured a Pro with 64 GB ram ... all a bit strange!! I guess the Australian site was wrong when I checked. I will look at the apple announcement and also read MacRumors about the MacBook Pros ...

And now I am wondering ... can I use a MacBook Air as an external screen for a new Mac Mini? For more serious use in my boat or caravan rather than my desktop !!

The appeal of Thunderbolt for me is not about monitors. It is because soon, one will be able to plug in a Thunderbolt 5 drive - and in a year or so maybe even a compact T-5 thumb drive, and run the OS efficiently off that drive. Currently it costs US$50 for some 1 TB NVME drives. Because Apple doesn't allow upgrading the internal drive, Thunderbolt 5 is a game changer IMO. Apple introduced in MacBook Pros Thunderbolt 3 in 2016 - 8 years ago. Thunderbolt 4 did not increase data transfer speeds over Thunderbolt 3. But Thunderbolt 5 doubles data transfer speeds over Thunderbolt 3 and 4. It's a big step IMO. However external T-5 devices will be expensive for a considerable time ... but they will become more affordable, and they will extend the utility of Apple's hardware a great deal IMO, as Apple's devices seem to be all modelled on notebook design.

Finally upgrading to the M4 Max from my trusty M1 Max. Genuinely the BEST laptop I've ever owned and it more than makes up for the headaches of the 2016-2019 models. It's pretty much been the laptop version of the 2018 iPad Pro in terms of value and longevity.

My work involves a lot of 3D modeling and rendering so the raytracing abilities of the M4 Max are the biggest draw. Scenes that took nearly 10 minutes to render on M1 Max took only a little over a minute on the M3 Max. I can only image those same scenes getting down to under a minute with the next gen ray tracing hardware. The extra 12gb of Ram will also be nice. Apple is making some great strides in making Mac a good platform for us 3D folks.

With the purported 4.7x increase in the speed of the neural engine from my M1Pro, if this translates into real world speed increases like that on Topaz 3(the only application that I use that taxes my mac), then I will upgrade to the M4pro, 10/4, 48 gb, 1TB.

M1 Pro still chugging along just fine. The only reason I'd opt for a new device at this point would be a side-grade to MacBook Air or going back to desktop. Web dev isn't too demanding, Ableton Live and plugins have leveraged more power thus far.

Any Apple Silicon MBP with 16 GB RAM will be a good upgrade compared to the 2019 MBP. More RAM will always be better in your use case, but the M4 Pro should provide a very significant CPU and GPU upgrade compared to the 8th gen Intel CPU.

M4 Pro looks like a huge upgrade but no other reason to upgrade. I'll wait for Wifi 7 and a redesign. I'm happy with the display but I think OLED will make it much thinner.

Already preordered a M4 Max Macbook Pro to replace my M1 Max 16"Macbook Pro. My current M1 Max is really taking a sweettime just to perform prototype machine learning tasks and running larger LLMs !

I guess my upgrade cycle is whenever my machine's Applecare expiring soon !

Expecting my Silver MBP 14 M4 MAX 40 Core/128GB/8TB Nov 19. Consolidating from a Mac Studio M1 MAX 32 Core/64GB/4TB and a MBA M2/24GB/2TB to a single powerful device. Docks with 3 HP 27" QHD monitors. Will probably add another monitor or TV. Excited and can't wait to simplify. This should last a min of 3-4 years before I upgrade again.

The 16" inch costs much the same in that very high specification, and has two fans rather than one, and the 16" has been shown to have considerably better cooling. Despite the extra bulk, for desktop use the 16" makes more sense IMO. It would run quieter too because of its better cooling.

You might also consider OWC's announced and costed Envoy Ultra drive, with speeds of 6,000 Mb/sec. Apple's internal drive speeds with M1s were around 6,000, but dropped to half ie 3,000 with the M2 series, due to using more storage cards. So 6,000 external speed is pretty fast.
https://www.reddit.com/r/macmini/comments/10ns2jg
OWC is taking orders: "The First and Fastest Thunderbolt 5 Portable SSD", and 2 TB costs $399 and 4 TB costs $599. Apple's upgrade from 2 TB to 4 TB costs $600. Apple's price for 8 TB is $2,200. Yet 2 of OWC's 4 TB T5 drives would cost $1,200 - half the price.
