Yes
Very true, but also the comparison does yield some results of note… meaning that actually it showed that inspite of it all, the difference across 32GB variations is somewhat negligible.
Ok, i think I got that, but admit it was a bit long to sit the whole video through…

I am wondering about the 16" 32GB M1 Pro vs 16" 32GB M1 Max also. It seems my workflow would benefit from 32GB (I use Windows in VM for some basic apps) and I do Music Production which may benefit from the 32GB unified memory...

However battery life and thermals are super important to me... In truth I don't necessarily need M1 Max, but I'd rather spec up for future proofing plus there's one project I'll be working on that will rely on Blender and I plan to do some videos with multiple 4K streams.

I had a 16" M1 Pro 32GB / 2TB on order but just changed to an M1 Max 32GB / 2TB which I think I am already regretting... If the M1 Pro 32GB gets 2 hours better battery on light tasks vs M1 Max 32GB then I will switching my order back again, but if the difference is more to do with memory vs GPU cores than I will stick with M1 Max....

I'll be following this thread!

The notebookcheck review should give us a very thorough clarification.

Question.

I am a professional video editor, use After Effects at times.

Debating between M1 Pro and M1 Max, not sure. Battery life isn't so important and budget wise, I would make the leap if the M1 Max really makes a difference in the workflow..

Thoughts?

M1 Macs do not run Windows in the same fashion as Intel Macs though. If running Windows is important then you might have to think of an alternative solution (run Windows via a box like Raspberry Pi*/remote machine). And there are some issues with Windows on ARM licensing

* I recall someone posted the solution in this forum but could not find it. [EDIT] Here it is: miniPC

Another way to look at it is, what is the maximum battery you’re likely to need, and will the M1 Max give you that.

I get more than a work day of battery on my M1 Max, which is the most I would need in a given day.

So does this reviewer:

Just anecdotal, but for me battery life is great. I come from an Intel 16” (5500/64GB/2TB) and now have a 14”/10-24 M1Max with 32GB/2TB. Yesterday I worked for 6 hours including a 1 hour Teams call and at the end of the day, battery had around 30% left. The system was lukewarm after the call. My 16” would’ve been scorching hot and the call by itself would have drained the battery halfway.

Bit off topic here, but how is your experience with 32GB on Apple Silicon when compared to 64Gb on Intel? And what is your typical workload?

I got the 64GB expecting I was going to run several VMs simultaneously. It has turned out differently. So I definitely don’t need that much RAM at the moment. I got 32GB now to be on the safe side. For work, I mostly do office stuff with the occasional VM (Windows, Linux) so curious how that will work. After work I get going with Logic.

Do you ever use Teams in the web browser rather than the stand-alone app? I think it uses less CPU.

Interesting observation! I’ll try that. Not a big fan of web apps if I can avoid them but this is a pretty good argument in favour.
You’ll need to use Chrome or Edge to get all the features. I use Edge, within which you can create an Edge App for Teams, which then essentially acts like a stand alone app in the dock (and seems quite light weight).

That's rather a roundabout way! I have to say my new 14" has no problems at all coping with Teams. I'll be doing my first call with external screen later today but I expect no problem. That makes it less interesting to test this and more likely I'll just stick to the plain old app.

How did the Team app hold up with that usage? I’ve heard it’s a bit laggy in Rosetta.
I like the idea of keeping the software on my Max as Apple Silicon native as possible. Also, I figured, you need a chromium browser available for when safari acts up, and I trust Microsoft over Google any day, so why not kill two birds with one stone.

It works great! I was docked (CalDigit Element TB4 hub) but the 14" M1Max handled it like any other Teams call. A bit warm, but nothing to worry about. My Intel 16" would go up in smoke with either Teams, or an external screen. Good for heating the house. With both, it spontaneously transformed into a blob of plasma ready for a Tokamak reactor. Great for heating the neighbouring city as well.

Talking about efficiency. I just emptied my battery (M1Max 24GPU, 32GB/2TB). But I don't have my charger, only my iPad Pro charger. I read that's a 12W charger? I've got my Macbook Pro connected to it. It's powering a Satechi 2-USB port extender that's connecting a USB keyboard and mouse + HDMI to my 4K screen. It's actually charging! But really slowly. Not doing much at the moment and I set it to low power mode.

This is off-topic, but how well does the CalDigit Element TB4 hub work with the 14”? I’m currently considering options for a TB4 hub.

Working perfectly. Charges fine with the 60W PD (of course, if even 12W can charge it...). I'm using it with USB to printer, keyboard, mouse, audio interface, iPhone (lightning, for charging) and a monitor (USB-C to mini DP). Everything works as it should, except my particular mini DP adapter requires a disconnect and reconnect before the MBP recognises the screen. Everything else works just as well as it worked directly connected to my Intel 16" USB-C ports.

Thank you! I have read accounts of trouble with almost all TB3/4 docks so this is reassuring. I use a 30W charger with my 14” so 60W is definitely more than enough.

Yeah I have tried to use it but it misses critical functions that I use on a daily basis :/ Hope MS sorts their things out and release a M1 native version.. Better yet put it on the App Store...
