What you are describing is Target Display Mode and you iMac does not have it. Although using screen sharing over a thunderbolt network connection could give you a best of both worlds with a windowed or full screen mac mini running on your iMac. You can use both computers at the same time using the same keyboard and mouse. You could also use something like Air Display/Duet Display or similar.I've read that you can use the iMAC monitor with the Mac mini and the keyboard and mouse, so that isn't an issue, what I don't know is can you have the iMac's drive also be set up as another Mac.
Just to make sure I understand, it's possible. I need to search out about "target display mode". Now what I want to make sure I clearly understood is I'd have a windowed or full screen mini running on my iMac (here I'm understanding what I thought may be possible that I'd have a separated Air Display/Duet Display(?) of my Mac mini while on my iMac desktop. What you are describing is Target Display Mode and you iMac does not have it. Oh well, Homy is right and I see later that he answered again (missed it). the Apple article here says not possible for newer MACs.Just to make sure I understand, it's possible. Thank sooo much! Haven't found any article or step-by-steps on doing this, but I'll look now with these terms. Much appreciated! God bless and stay safe (everyone).![]()
Thanks! You're right. Now sad though, but I have another monitor so I may still make my next Mac an Mac mini. Appreciate the help!As far as I know that was true for old iMacs. If you're talking about Target Display mode it only works with iMac 2009-2014. You can also start your iMac in Target Disk Mode to transfer files to another Mac but not to boot the system on iMac from another computer as far as I know. (Sorry for going off topic)
Your iMac does not have target display mode built in. But it can use Screen Sharing which is part of networking. If you Screen Share via a thunderbolt cable you can get a better connection and a faster refresh. Air Display and Duet Display are paid apps that do a similar thing (but better). It would be a compromise and monitor would probably be better.Just to make sure I understand, it's possible. I need to search out about "target display mode".
