She did follow my advice and purchased well below $2000.
Stay with the facts, not the feelings! 🤫
Nice try, but this is the post to which you responded with snark, in which she initially decided to buy new. The fact that circumstances subsequently changed for her, and she bought an NIB machine from a friend, is irrelevant. I'm the one that's sticking to the facts; you're the one trying to distort them.

That's not snarky, that's factual. For $2000+ you should already get a twice as powerful MacBook Pro with a beefy M1 Pro processor. And some upgrade options only exist to make the cheaper model look worthwhile. We can literally see her compare a $2200 with a $2700 option. That's how this sales trick works, regardless whether she fell for it.

Of course the following is snark.

Indeed, it exactly fits the definition!: "Critical or mocking comments made in an indirect or sarcastic way." [Source: Apple Dictionary] You are criticizing her here, and you are using sarcasm to do that ("Congratulations!"). If you can't understand that, you lack basic social awarness:
Congratulations! You've successfully rationalized paying twice as much as you should.
Then again, if you had that, you wouldn't have made that post in the first place. The point is you don't go after someone just because they don't choose to act in lock-step with your advice. That kind of poor behavior makes MR a less collegial place, which is why it's important to call out that behavior when you see it, which is what I'm doing now.

I'm guessing you were so eager to crticize her that, before penning your sarcasm, you didn't even bother actually reading her first post, where she clearly indicates she's using CDN, not USD; $2000 CDN = $1450 USD.

Thanks!

So, I did it, but things worked out a little different. I got a notification for an M2 MBA locally. Turned out to be a midnight, 8CPU/8GPU, with 512GB storage but 8GB RAM. Was purchased as a gift but the person it was intended for has one already. It was still sealed up in the cardboard shipping box, never been touched. Now I know we talked about RAM, 16GB would have been better for peace of mind, but I create podcasts and write things generally, and I play a few 2D indie games with friends once in awhile. I decided to do it, for $1600. Then I went and subscribed to AppleCare as soon as I got it home.

It's working great honestly. Can't believe how instantaneous it is compared to the MBP. I mean, I can, but it's practically supernatural. I realize I may have kneecapped its longevity with the memory, but I think with my usage, I'll get five years use out of it at a minimum, I'll push for seven. And for $1600 rather than $2700, I won't mind so much if it doesn't make it as long.

Thanks again for all the help folks. Cheers.

Why did you pay $1,600 when the retail price for a 16/512 machine is only $1,479?

Please tell me you made a typo.

I find it hard to rationalize spending 1.4k or more on the MacBook Air...There's a list of pros to just shifting over to the Pro line.

I'm one of a handful of people worldwide who don't live in America. CDN dollars. A 16/512 base model costs $2k here, a 16/512 with a 10 core GPU is $2150. :apple:

That's fair. I just don't think everyone needs a Pro. I wanted something light and small, but I wanted the new features the Air brought to the table like the return of MagSafe (which my old 2015 MBP had), better camera for video calls as I do a lot of those with doctors, and I dunno, it's just pretty. That's gotta count for something. I do some light indie gaming, I write, and I record podcasts and music, mostly. With the power of the M2 an Air is sufficient. Geekbench 5 shows roughly an 8X speed increase over my old MBP. I'll survive I think. :) The screen capture is from my MBA, the test results for 14,2 are this laptop; the 2015 MBP is a Geekbench average. Pretty hard to get two screen captures from two different machines, one of which is wiped and awaiting a new owner, to prove this point, but I digress.

You really do deserve a medal for the effort you're putting into my defence, friend. Thank you. Fun fact, I have my pronouns in my signature because I used to have another account on here which I'm not going to name outright, but on that profile, I presented as a guy. You know what happened? None of this garbage. People would disagree with me for sure, but not in the way some folks are just being straight up rude, as on here. Yes, I asked for someone to check my math, but that didn't mean I required the attitude of some folks. I'm not very good at diffusion of situations, in that when I get snark, I send it right back on the double. Would help if I could keep a cooler head, but that aside, rudeness shouldn't be tolerated in the first place. Don't worry, I've got a thick enough skin to weather it, just sad to see is all.

And anyway I'm going to tuck out of this thread now, I'm writing these responses on my new MBA, so any further debate is rather moot.

Its amazing the amount of hate these new machines get, its just ridiculous. This isn't new anymore, these machines are clearly capable and have their place in the apple line up that people love. I have a 16/1tb m2 air and I would never trade it for a pro for what I need. I value the design and portability and in a very fast machine, what's not to love?

And I agree, the amount of snark and rudeness in this forum is really uncalled for. And ive been suspended a couple time already for standing up to their behaviour instead of them being dealt with properly in the first place. I do my part and report, but more times then not, I get a response back saying they did nothing wrong.

These type of people are definitely driving good people away from these forums and its a shame. Didn't use to be this bad, ive been on here for over a decade and its amazing how far these people are allowed to go in antagonizing others with no repercussions. Many others including myself are definitely growing tired of these bullies.

Exactly. They haven't suspended me (yet), but I've gotten repeated warnings for calling out people on their trolling. The moderators are more than happy to have people act like trolls. They just don't tolerate anyone who stands up to it. Seems Alice-in-Wonderland backwards to me.

They're like a bar owner who doesn't mind if his patrons get punched by the local bully, but won't tolerate it if someone swings back, because that could start a fight that could damage his bar. I.e., he cares about his bar, not the people in it. Same with the mods here. Of course, it's not just MR. This type of mod behavior is common across many forums.
