I checked my 30" Cinema Display and I have the 0x9921 version that apparantly can use the HDCP ON adapters. Which one should I get? I can't seem to find the cheaper versions with HDCP On. Thanks for any help or links to an adapter that would work.
I saw this one, for example, but it is 1080P and says it doesn't support the 30" Cinema Display.

That is 1080p. Not the right adapter.

Have you tried installing MonitorControl.app?

Everyone is getting this model with HDCP off but note that many people don't need it. If your 30” ACD is a later model with HDCP support, you may actually be better off getting the cheaper Club3D one with HDCP on.

Mine is a later model (2007 IIRC) which supports HDCP, so I got an HDCP-on CableCreation adapter (which looks identical to the Club3D one), and that works. The benefit of course is full HDCP support, with full 1080p support for Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime, Apple TV+, etc.

You can tell the date of manufacture from the serial number, but if you plug in the USB plug from the monitor and look under the USB section of System Report, you can also check the monitor's Product ID. Mine is 0x9221, which AFAIK corresponds to the HDCP-compatible model.
So which CableCreation adapter did you get? The only one I see on Amazon is only 1080P as you point out. Would you have a link to the one you got that is confirmed to work? Thanks so much.

I'm in Canada. The CableCreation one is no longer available here on Amazon.ca and I don't think it's available anymore in the US either. So you may need to get the Club3D one. CAC-1510 (They have an HDCP-on version and an HDCP-off version.)

However, there are other issues, so I just bought a new monitor instead: Huawei MateView 28.2" 4K+

It's a 3840x2560 monitor, but I run at 2304x1536. Other people might run at 2560x1707 or whatever.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I don't think we have Huawei monitors in the US. Can I ask what issues you were having with your 30" cinema display? While I was able to get it to work through an old OWC TB2 dock, when I tried running it and the newer Apple Studio Display on a Mac Mini, the color was off and dimmed on the 30" cinema display. When running by itself, it seems fine. Weird.

Thanks!

It's been a long time since I got the new monitor, but IIRC, there were issues with wake from sleep, brightness control, and video streaming DRM support (even with an HDCP-on adapter). Plus my 30" Apple Cinema HD Display now has significant image retention when warmed up.

Thanks for the response. Glad you're happy with the new monitor. It's a shame there are so few options for 3:2 or 16:10 aspect ratio monitors these days. I'll give the Club3D adapter a shot and see if I can get my 30" Cinema display to work for a bit longer. Thanks again for your input and responses!

Hello, it looks like this is a nice thread to ask about 30" Cinema and new macbook pro connection. I was wondering, would it be possible to connect the 30" to the HDMI port on the macbook pro? EDIT: With something like this: https://www.addonnetworks.com/products/a-v-cables-misc/industry-standard/hdmi2dvid
The product page for the adapter does not mention refresh rate or pixel clock so I would not trust it to be able to do 2560x1600@60Hz. It's probably just a passive adapter that supports single link only; it has a DVI dual link female connector so that it's compatible with dual link male cables. Since it's probably only single link, the 30" Cinema display will only be able to do 1280x800@60Hz. Other displays might allow 2560x1600@30Hz.

I don't think anyone makes a real HDMI to Dual Link DVI adapter. If you want to connect the display to the HDMI port and get 2560x1600@60Hz, then you need a HDMI to DisplayPort adapter and a DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI adapter. Chaining adapters together might not work reliably.

Hello, thanks for heads up about the refresh rate! I already do have the display port to dual link adapter, but is there possibly an HDMI to Display Port (female) adapter you know of that might work? I try to use the HDMI port to leave USB-C ports free for other tasks. Thank you!

I would use Club-3d CAC-1335 for HDMI to DisplayPort. The CAC-1336 can be used for HDMI to USB-C but only for USB-C displays or docks - doesn't work with USB-C to DisplayPort cable or adapter. They support HDMI 2.1 for future proofing, as well as DVI, HDMI 1.1,1.3,1.4,2.0 and width > 4096. HDMI 2.0 to DisplayPort adapters only support width ≤ 4096.
