M2X coming to Mac Mini also?

Any chance Apple will put a M2X in their Mac Mini? An iPad chip is a total waste of the thermal capabilities that the Mac Mini has. It can easily handle far more cpu and gpu cores.

Perhaps it will have fixed all the problems with the current M1 Mac Mini too if the Mac Mini gets the M2X like the 16” MBP.

M2X does not exist. So any question regarding this imaginary product does cannot be answered in a meaningful way.

If you are instead asking whether the Mac Mini will get the same upcoming prosumer chip Apple will debug in the refreshed MacBook Pros, that is almost a certainty. They still sell the Intel Mini which means they have a more powerful Apple Silicon update in the pipeline.

based on that it would get the M2, unless there is a mini pro released or something like that

I don't even understand where all this M#X rumors come from. Why wouldn't the next processor just be M2? Why would a new processor come out so soon? More importantly, what would an updated AS Mini add? eGPU support? I can't think of anything else it's missing. Its been an entry level offering for at least a decade now, why would they put a high-end processor in it?

Main reason is Apple's "AX" series of SoCs for the iPad Pro line (2015-2020) that added additional CPU and GPU cores.

Per Bloomberg, Apple is said to be working on an M-series SoC for at least the 14" and 16" MacBook Pro with more CPU cores (8 performance and 2 efficiency) and more GPU cores (16 and 32) under the "JadeC" family codename (which maps to an earlier report from The China Times stating that the codename for a "prosumer" version of the M1 SoC was "Mount Jade").

So from a marketing standpoint, calling the "JadeC" SoCs as "M1X" would make sense as they would be more powerful versions of the M1 SoC.

"M2" is expected to use the A15 foundation and would be the next generation SoC for the next generation of MacBook Air, 24" iMac and the 13.3" MacBook Pro (if it continues to exist past the current model). Then that would get the "M2X" treatment with more CPU and GPU cores for the more powerful Macs at a later date.

Because M2 will be the successor to the M1. M1X is a tier above the M1 with more cores. It’s a different line of chips for different computers.

Why? The M1 mini only replaces the i3 variant. Apple still sells the i5 and the i7 variants and the i5 is actually discontinued by Intel. Apple will want to replace those Intel models with something sooner rather than later. If Apple does announce an M1X in the fall for the MacBook Pro, I bet it will also go into the i5/i7 mini variants we still have now.

Personally I’m hoping for a pro event with MacBook Pro, Mac mini Pro and iMac Pro all with a M1X chip. Otherwise it’s going to be a long wait for an updated Mac mini and iMac Pro.

My thinking is they’ll get rid of the iMac 27” tier and run with a 30” iMac and call it iMac Pro and they’ll also release a Mac mini Pro to take over from the current Mac mini top tier.

I read the recent speculation from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman about an AS iMac to replace the current Intel based 27” iMac but nothing so far about another AS Mac Mini from the usual leakers.

I wonder if there is going to be room in Apple’s line up for a more “Pro” Mac Mini and also a rumored Mini Mac Pro if that’s true.

Gurman has talked about a higher end Mini in one of his reports and Prosser supposedly has seen a redesign and made a mock-up of it. Take the latter with a grain of salt.

That's because most of these so-called 'leaks' are people just guessing or making things up. If they'd had real inside information, then they should known about the M1 mini in advance. There is some truth to that. Except maybe the original rumors of Apple switching to in-house developed chips. That one was more than just a lucky guess

Not sure why the "M2X" moniker has become popular considering a "M2" hasn't been released as of yet. I think many people expect the chip that goes in to the MacBook Pro 14/16 refresh will also likely be used to replace the remaining Intel Mac mini offering.

There are a lot of armchair product managers on here that think they know a lot of things. Unless there are any Apple employees secretly arguing with trolls on Macrumors forum threads, none of us really know what we’re talking about.

No. Some people have legit sources and aren’t making it up, like Gurman and Kuo. Conflating all rumors and speculation with real reporters is silly.
