I ordered the M3 over the M3 Pro as the latter overkill for me. I actually canceled a M2 Pro I ordered a few days ago. I do wish I could have gotten the black though. I really wanted more ports than the MacBook Air.

if the mac laptops doesnt have great battery life , then you should check windows laptop for 1 year and come back
Naaa. the Air is to the go-to laptop, and will be for some time. The screen and a fan aren't worth the additonal cost for most people.
Now that I've had a fanless Air, I'd pay MORE for a laptop that didn't need a fan.

If I bought a MacBook Pro I’d spring for the M3 Pro at least and also because I’d want the Space Black. But I think at $1599, the base 14” M3 MacBook Pro is a heck of a deal. You’re getting the display, ports, speakers, add $200 RAM upgrade to $1799, and you’re getting a lot of computer for sub $2000. At that point, I’d personally rather go with a base 14” M3 Pro with the space black but still nice to see the 14” model now the entry level MacBook Pro. Having a 13” MacBook Pro was weird.
what are you talking about? the 14" Mbp with M3 you probably never hear the fan....that chassis and SoC are more than enough in most tasks to keep the fan under 1000rpm, probably off
The screen, the fan, the speakers, the ports probably will make up since now the upcoming 15" M3 Macbook air will be almost the same weight and dimensions as this one...so the advantages of the Mba are gone, only disadvantages (besides the price of course)
From what i can see is you go with the 13" Macbook air for its purpose of portability or go with the 14" the 15" it has no more purposes besides the price
EDIT: now i saw you have the M1 air so the 13" Mba...as i said, the Macbook air now, makes sense only in the 13" size as you have
So maybe for you is the best to wait until spring 2024 to see the 13" M3 Mba
This reminds me of the time in the late 1990s when my dad was considering getting a Mercedes Benz S-Class. The short wheelbase model with the six cylinder 227hp engine. Sure, it’s got S-Class looks and gravitas, but the back seat was ‘roomy’ rather than ‘cavernous,’ and that inline six struggled to get the 2.5 ton S-Class (remember, the 1990s model that looked/felt like a bank vault on wheels) up to 60mph in less than 10 seconds. Acceptable performance? Sure. What you expect after dropping $$$ on a big Benz? Ehhhh…

I prefer portability over everything else, so I'm sticking with the 13". When I need a bigger screen, I have an external monitor.
Either way, I'm keeping my M1 for a long time, if possible. I hope to keep it as long as I did my 2012 MBP; eight years.
Because by putting it in the same line, they can claim a lower starting price for the whole line and influence buyers to ladder up.
Take advantage of—probably. Enjoy—I think anyone can. Whether that’s worth it to a large segment, I don’t know. I guess we’ll see how well it sells.
A better deal, IMO, is to purchase Best Buy's $179 TotalTech plan. It more or less pays for itself right out of the gate if you want one of the new M3 laptops. They are giving a $100 discount on pre-orders, and like with any Apple product you buy, AppleCare+ is included at no additional charge. I had purchased an M1 MBA for $749 before the announcement but will be returning it in favor of the base M3 Pro 14.
This is on top of any other TotalTech benefits there are, which includes two-year GeekSquad warranties on most other purchases along with a 60-day return policy.
11-inch iPad Pro is good example. It uses conventional LCD due to cost. Serious content creators will go for the 12.9-inch mini LED model.
Maybe granny likes the better Pro display and the better Pro speakers but can suffice with (cheaper) 8 GB RAM.
You do know that MBP fans do not kick in unless the MBP is used more aggressively than an MBA is capable of, right? And that MBPs have more ports and superior speakers as well as displays.
Do music production as a hobby, I don't need a mega-cpu or gpu, but when I'm working with sampled audio files I can't bring myself to buy an 8gb laptop, nor can I bring myself to drop £2000+ on a laptop just to get more than 8gb of ram when my kid is still using my old windows laptop thats 7 years old and will do music production fine plugged in with 32GB ram and was cheaper to buy at that spec 7 years agio than the 14inch macbook pro is today with 8gb.
I'd love to try MacOS and the lovely form factor/screen/battery etc, but not that much. I get theres the apple tax and so on, but surely for people like me this memory strategy is shooting themselves in the foot.

This is basically how Apple works, though. I have experienced it many times - I look at what they offer and the next step up is always tempting enough to push you several price points higher than you originally thought. It works better the worse the base model is, because it makes the expensive models they really want you to buy (because it costs them $5 more per $100 of additional sales price) more attractive by comparison.
Yes, I am very puzzled when people argue that fanless designs are somehow "better". A fan doesn't need to be on, it is only a net positive when you do intensive tasks (considering the Air throttles).
They've been selling those since the M1 was announced. All this is is 13" touchbar Pro moved into the 14" chassis.
I've had my M2 Air for over a year now and have only felt it get warm once while transcoding like 65 iPhone videos at the same time in Handbrake. While running Xcode, Affinity Photo, Apple Photos, editing video, etc, I've never even felt it warm up. The throttling thing is greatly exaggerated and only really happens under synthetic loads or completely unrealistic workloads.
Yep. Battery life and fanless design for the amount of power provided are the only reasons I ever left Thinkpad for m2 Air. It has delivered above and beyond my expectations.
I've despised fans since the 486 days. Now that I have a fanless computer, I'm never going back; I don't care if it's so quiet I never hear it.
This is a 25+ year wish, resolved.
