Be really disappointed if it is just that considering the 295x already suffers from down clocking due to thermal issues.

I have the 5K M295X model, and haven't noticed thermal throttling by the GPU in over a year of use.

Get the best GPU/CPU for the machine, as I don't think they can be upgraded (GPU certainly can't). I went with 256 Gb SSD as I decided to used external drives for storage.

4 Gb VRAM vs. 2 Gb VRAM makes a big difference to games. If you have too little VRAM it hurts performance as it is always transferring data across the GPU bus rather than from GPU memory.

I'd like to hear from users who actually have the M380 graphics card in the 27" iMac. How well does it run? Do you regret not getting the higher spec model?

Seeing as the 390 runs 30% to 50% better (according to benchmarks posted in this thread ) than the 380 for not much extra I cannot see benefit of the lesser card.
Beyond the 390 is only of limited benefit to gamers and tbh this computer not aimed at gamers per se.
Buy the 390 with the cheapest i7 and 512gb ssd. Best bang for buck. If u buy the cheaper graphics card you will always kick yourself whenever there is a slow down. And the i7s all turboboost to very similar top speeds of 3.8gh anyway (ie to the same thermal boundary) .

But 395 is only $50 more. The big cost jump is 395X. If I were ordering our new iMacs today, I would go go i7, 512SSD, 8GB (use cheaper 3rd party to go at least 16MB), and 395.

But I will hold off to see what will be in the next generation of iMacs.

I went for M395. For me it was no brainer as you not only get the GPU, but also faster CPU (i5 6600 vs i5 6500) and 2TB fusion as standard in that configuration. M390 configuration isn't that competitive once you add 2 TB Fusion into the order.

I don't play games, but hope hope the extra GPU horsepower can help to get Adobe CC apps faster as they keep doing more and more stuff on the GPU in every release of apps.

M390 vs M395

The difference is the processing power. Memory bus is same, so not much advantage for pixel pushing. There's a new lossless compressing algorithm for textures in M395(X), but I don't know if El Captain can use it yet. In Metal v2 in macOS there is (it seems) a support for that, so in future M395 could be some faster than today in Mac games. In Windows this feature is already supported, so there is a big difference between these two GPUs.

For Mac desktop use, M395 doesn't make that big difference. Going from M380 to M390 is a huge leap.

M395 vs M395X

Even more processing power with double ram. Still, memory bus is same as with M390.

Summa summarum: M390 is the best choice for general 5k desktop use from current options. For demanding 3D or video editing, M395 is better. Apple really is milking with the M395X. It might save you from couple of hiccups in video editing, and 4Gb is needed for gaming... but for the extra 300€ you'll get PS4 / Xbox / Wii U system. But it is up to your preference (and wallet) of course. :)

This and the stats posted in this thread by other members made me confident m395 is the right choice for me. And i5 (i7 too expensive) and 500GB SSD (never any HDD again) and upgrade Ram myself (16 or 32).

The only bad thing about it is that the new Imac may come soon, but that is OK, I can't wait. Ordered today :)

I did the same thing. :)

Congrats, I opted for the M395 model as well, but I stuck with the 2TB Fusion drive, the 500GB SSD was too small for me and I didn't want to pay Apple's outrageous prices for a 1TB SSD

I bought a refurb'd 27" with 1TB SSD and it was not bad price wise. Unfortunately, refurb'd can be hit or miss.

The price point brings the cost of the iMac to close to 3k, and for that, I struggled at justifying the value I was getting for my money. Heck, I struggled back in 2015 at spending 2k on a computer, never mind, 3,000

I have no regrets, and while the 1TB SSD is a great product, I've been very happy with the Fusion drive.

No argument that the iMacs can get expensive pretty quickly. The Fusion drive is a great option in how they are optimized to work. Close to SSD performance.

Hey all this is getting a bit long to read through so I just thought i would come out and ask,. I currently have the iMac 27 with the M390. Ram I'm going to do myself later, the Fusion drive is 1 TB and is a moot point since I have external storage. My heaviest use of this machine currently would be to learn apple motion. comparing the 395 and current 390 would the $100 difference be worth it. It sounds like for non gaming, the cards aren't that big of a difference.

Thanks Other then that I would be video editing with 1080p as the max resolution, or doing screen casting with screenflow.

If you already have the M390 model, I don't think it's worth the upgrade. Better to wait for the Kaby Lake models which should come out this year.

I just bought this iMac last Friday so I have time to return it or exchange it that's why I'm asking . I know Apple is going to release new models Burt I bought this one so I know I will have a machine that I can at least upgrade the ram in later. If apple does something with the iMacs to make them non user serviceable like the laptops, then I'm going to change platforms so I can have a user serviceable machine.

I hope it doesn't come to that as I've grown up with Macs, and it's mainly about the software. Even so, I don't upgrade a lot, but it's just having the option that's nice. So my goal at this point is to get a Mac desktop that will last quite a few years until I can make a better choice down the road after I see where apple is going this year.

In that case, I'd say it's worth the extra for the 2TB fusion drive with the 128GB of SSD that includes. The M395 is probably the sweet spot between price and performance, but I don't think that's really a factor based on what you said you were doing.

The 2TB M395 model is the one my partner uses for her Graphic Design business. I upgraded it to 32GB of Crucial RAM for her.

When I wipe the drive do I need to reinstall the OS or will Best Buy do that before they resell it ?
