If you're the type of person who buys and holds then leasing might not be for you. However if you're someone who likes or needs to have the latest and greatest leasing can make more sense.
Apples Upgrade program can even make sense for those who buy and hold as it gives you the ability to make 24 or 36 months worth of payments and then buy the system out at the end of the term. Given there's no money factor and the payments + buy out = original purchase price it's like having zero percent financing for a portion of the system and then a balloon payment at the end.
Take the base model Studio Ultra at $5,499.00. You can either:
- Pay $5,499.00 upfront and own it
- Lease it for $110.10 / month for 36 months and then exercise the buyout option of $1,535.40.
Either way you shell out $5.499. Note this is just for illustrative purposes, I got the $110.10/month from Apple's website and I assume the residual will be $1,535.40 based on what I know of the program.
