Hi,
I Have weird issues with my Mac Pro 5.1.
I have installed high sierra first (after using El Capitan) but after few days I have changed it to Sierra. High Sierra was a bit sluggish probably due to APFS or maybe K5000.
Anyhow.. since few days I am having issues with my system. First cMP went off and I had question mark folder issue. Actually all my drive have disappeared. For some time I could not even boot with USB. I had some verbose mode and restarts. After some time computer switched on (randomly) and I could login into system normally but my mouse started to be super laggy, cursor was jumping, circle of death was spinning, my Wi-fi started to disconnect. Also I remember few weeks ago my Mac did not want to turn on for few times.
I don’t know why I can’t run AHT anymore (I have it on usb).
So, I really want to fix it because I am happy with it but I am not sure how to diagnose where is the issue.
Logic board, memory ( test results with Rember are ok) cpu, drives or maybe GPU?

Please let me know what do you think guys.

Mac Pro 5.1 mid 2010, 2x 3,06 (replaced 2,66 long time ago) 64gb ram (4x16gb ram), k5000 ssd 850 pro, ssd 830 pro, hdd WD.

I can also post ***panic report*** if it can help.

Thank you!

Kernel panic reports can certainly help determine the issue, so guesswork is out of the equation.

From what I'm gathering, it can be a few things, the last KeXT's I see being loaded and unloaded were in regards to the keyboard and file system. It's possible they are corrupt, need updating, or even possibly memory issues. I'd run some memory tests however since you said you had issues even USB booting.

So my money is on maybe a RAM issue. Since you can't run AHT, you can probably run memtest86 through CSM/Bootcamp.

Thanks, didn’t catch that earlier.
Hi guys,

I can't run AHT but I can now log in into Sierra. Everything works almost ok. Right now only wi-fi is getting disconnected. Also I had a chance to test RAM and all 4 modules are ok. Do you guys have an idea how I can test the hardware in another way?

You can only run AHT/ASD with GPUs that have pre-boot configuration support and only an Apple OEM GPU will run all the tests. Try with an Apple GPU and use this instructions to make the AHT USB key: https://github.com/upekkha/AppleHardwareTest

Thank you for your suggestion. I could run AHT yesterday but I can’t run it anymore. I did not wait until the end because with all my memory it was taking too long. 2h and rly small progress. Wanted to shut down and restart with less ram but didn’t work :)

Yea you also said you had verbose booting at one point, therefore your card has UGA, so I doubt that's the case.
[doublepost=1567806575][/doublepost]So here's something weird to try. Use a different keyboard. You said you couldn't get into AHT, and that one time it went into some verbose mode. The last loaded KeXT before the panic was the keyboard driver.

I mean, I'm just taking a shot in the dark here, but try a different keyboard. As weird as it sounds, I have seen HID devices cause kernel panics before, so give it a shot.

Thank you Inx64 for helping me.
I have tried different keyboard but still I can't access AHT. With D pressed it takes much longer to boot (white screen)
but I am getting apple logo instead of AHT computer icon.

Verbose mode was twice when I was trying to boot with USB installer but without any success. Now all of it is back to normal. I am just sure that anytime I might still getting those issues again.

The keyboard kernel panic maybe was because I am using USB switch like this https://www.iogear.com/product_images/web/org/GUS404_0.jpg

DOn't you think maybe there is something wrong with my logic board?

It's hard to say but it could be. I'd just honestly start swapping out hardware, even going as barebones to test.

I'm in the hospital ER right now but will try to follow further when discharged.

When the MP was failing to power on, did you look inside the case to see if any diagnostic LEDs were going off? Might provide a further clue. Something to keep in mind if that particular problem recurs.

Otherwise I agree with others here that you should remove drives, memory, expansion cards, etc. to get down to a bare bones setup and see if the problem persists. It is not fun to be switching parts in and out but is the only way to systematically eliminate variables.

Inx64 I hope you get well soon!
Flehman thank you too. I will try it. Anyhow I have some updates.

USB with AHT was corrupted so I could fix it and run AHT.

First try- some pink glitches (squares) and then freeze. I had to restart

Second try - quick test and success. No errors.

3rd try - extended test and error
4HDD/11/40000004:SATA(3,0)

I’ve seen it might be false error.
Anyhow I have removed 2nd and 3rd drive (ssd and hdd) I have also used aid
On main Ssd.
Btw does (3,0) mean it’s third bay?

4th try- extended test with one SSD.
All good, no errors.

5th try - all drives back and extended test. Hang in the middle of the test.

6th try only 1ssd - graphic glitches and freeze before test.

I started to think it might be gpu.

Still no clue what it can be it is very random.

You should run AHT with the stock hardware only. Any 3rd party hardware (including your K5000) may cause erroneous result.

Yea at this point, revert back to my earlier statement, pull everything and go barebones. It's the old fasion way, but the best way.

And thanks, turns out I might have early stages of lung cancer apparently, wasn't what I was even in for, so I'm just going to try and hold my head up high. Can't control my body now, now it's in the hands of medicine.

No more of a third party than any other card made specifically for a mac, I would think he is good with this model. But the graphic glitches he seems to have indicate a card starting to fail. An easy way to test is throw in a PC card just for testing and see if the problems come back.

Like I said earlier, AHT/ASD requires an Apple OEM to GPU run all tests. 3rd party GPUs like K5000 fails the GPU test.

I also expect that's GPU issue at this moment due to that pick square.

However......

Graphics: NVIDIA Quadro K5000, NVIDIA Quadro K5000, PCIe, 3584 MB
Memory Module: DIMM 1, 16 GB, DDR3 ECC, 1333 MHz, 0x80CE, 0x4D33393342324737304248302D5948392020

Memory Module: DIMM 5, 16 GB, DDR3 ECC, 1333 MHz, 0x80CE, 0x4D33393342324737304248302D5948392020

Serial ATA Device: SAMSUNG SSD 830 Series, 256,06 GB
Serial ATA Device: WDC WD10EZRX-22A3KB0, 1 TB

All these are the 3rd party hardware.

And the AHT NEVER decided to handle K5000 regardless if that's Mac Edition or not. AHT won't able to understand / decode the parameters from the K5000 correctly. AHT won't even know what K5000 is.

AHT is very very very very very hardware specific. Even 4,1 / 5,1 has different version of AHT, cannot be mixed use.

If OP want to know the cMP is working correctly. He should revert the cMP back to the original factory config, including DIMM, HDD, GPU. Any deviation from the factory hardware may cause erroneous result in AHT.

And if AHT shows OK at that config. Then he may assume all original hardware is fine, then test the 3rd party hardware one by one (by other method, e.g. MemTest for DIMM) .

Yes, but at least you can run a MP5,1 or MP4,1>5,1 with a GT120 or HD 4870 and fully complete the tests using AHT for MP5,1 (022-4831-A.dmg) and Apple Service Diagnostics 3S149, no need to downgrade to MP4,1 firmware and use MP4,1 AHT/ASD versions for it.

Hello tsialex,
I still have the ASD CD (of two) that came with my map pro mid 2010 5,1
But I understand that the AHT is a more complete test.
I am on Mojave's boot ROM, but I do boot to High Sierra as well and also have the original Radeon 5770.
How do I get the AHT test for MP 5,1? ...if at all possible.
I did some research here, but your post is the closest I got to this.
Please be kind to show me where else to research.
Best,
Alex
