OK, just got done unboxing.

Pretty white thing.

First thing I did was toss in a 1,1 testing machine. BOOT SCREENS !!!

Box says requires 10.8.2 or....wait for it.......10.7.5. Has a drivers disc for OSX.

So while Nvidia gave up on 1,1 long ago, AMD still remembers us !!!

Going to try in the 4,1 and post screenies, etc.

Who wants to know if it works in 10.7.5?

Thanks much as always MacVidCards for providing such valuable info!

Reread all the posts and couldn't answer this for myself, but did you get the 4 screens running (post #7) on a 1,1 using 10.8.3? The screenshot notes a Link Speed of 5.0 GT/s which I believe is impossible in a 1,1 (PCIe v1 -> 2.5GT/s)

Just curious if you used a workaround to install 10.8.3 on a 1,1 and had the 7950 work, or if you only tried the 7950 in a 1,1 running 10.7.5 and faced the KP issues you mentioned in post #17.

To recap: have you or anyone else tried a 7950 (mac version) in a 1,1 or 2,1 running 10.8.2 or 10.8.3? (Using one of the workaround to force install 10.8.x on an "unsupported" 1,1 or 2,1.)

Thanks much in advance!

7950 10.7.5 drivers working !!!

I decided to try a 4th 10.7.5 install I found in my desk drawer. It was a 5400 rpm drive I pulled from my MBP and it had 10.7.2 on it.

The best part is that it was never fiddled with in a desktop for any reason so no kext tweaks of any sort.

I freshly downloaded 10.7.5 and updated the drive with it while running an Nvidia card.

I repaired permissions.

Then I slapped the driver disc in and ran it.

Then I repaired permissions again. The installer had left many components with bad permissions.

Finally I installed 7950 and rebooted. And for first time it worked. This makes it quite likely that AMD 7xxx series are going to be new 1,1 and 2,1 darlings. I will know for sure when I move the drive over to the 1,1. It is currently in use for a marathon of "League of Legends" and the user would be rather unhappy to shut down just so I could get the answer to this.

But 7950 is working A-OK in 4,1 running 10.7.5

It has EBC firmware that gives boot screens in a 1,1 or 2,1. (it works in ANY MAC PRO, something not true of Nvidia cards)

It runs 4 displays at once. (* if you do the stuff specified in small print somewhere)

It's available at Newegg or TigerDirect or other places.

I will post screenies from 1,1 as soon as Legendary League dismounts.

Hi, did you do anything special to get 7850 working?

I would swear that there was a guy saying it didn't work.

And Alex-IN, you should update to newer Ocean Waves, you are using old one.

(Little disappointing, my PC Radeon 7870 is faster)

I'm trying to run the heaven benchmark but, as soon as I enable anti-aliasing, I see graphics corruption, as in the background here. I'm running an Apple 5870 in an upgraded Mac Pro 4,1.

Any ideas?

Change ID 6818 ->6819 . Works fine .

Bad news...figured out why I was having trouble with 10.7.5

The new 7950 drivers for 10.7.5 require 64 bit !!!!

This took some time to figure out, mostly because I'm otnay ootay ightbray.

I will just say in my defense that I have my Lion installs set to 32 bit mode because the OSX version of nvflash is 32 bit only. I like to work on Nvidia roms and fine tune them, reflash in OSX and reboot. Much less tedious than crossbooting into Windows just to flash and then back to OSX to test.

Anyhow, by using the HD from a MBP I was able to get 10.7.5 drivers working on 3,1. I expected to plop the drive in the 1,1 and grab some screenies of it working there.

Imagine my surprise when it booted to locked grey screen on 1,1 just like previous failed attempts. I then connected the dots, i never set MBP drive to boot 32 bit by default since I don't need to reflash anything in it. So the 10.7.5 drivers can be made to work in 3,1 by just holding "6" and "4" at boot. (or by assigning boot to be 64 bit)

I can replicate my previous failures by allowing 32 bit mode.

So, for 7xxx to work on 1,1 and 2,1 they will need to boot 64 bit kernel. This would explain the confusing messages from Sapphire about supported Mac Pros.

I can not understand why they would include an EBC EFI that allows glorious boot screens in 1,1 and 2,1 but drivers that WON'T work there.

I'm going to try to force 64 bit kernel in 1,1.

Oddly, this is similar to issue that many have had with 69xx and 7xxx on Hacks. I am curious if connected.

This is also getting close to some ML and 1,1 and 2,1 issues.

I will update as I figure more out.

Looks like the kext's are 32/64 but something called "com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily 1.4" is last item in every Panic Log

I have posted the drivers at Netkas'

http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/topic,5607.0.html

If you have a 1,1 or 2,1 and a 7xxx card I would very much be interested if these work.

They seem to choke on 32 bit.

Good luck !
