I actually have the MBA M2 16GB/1TB/10CoreGPU Model and with many Browser and Apps open an average of View attachment 2233275 37 Celsius View attachment 2233274 with Hot App when having 30 Celsius Room Temps.

As your MBA is New it may perform some more Tasks in the Background cause you have an average of 80% Unused CPU. The Temps look OK for 80% unused CPU/GPU.

I have also the MBA M2 in Clamshell mode and a Casing:

Oh nice.Mine is sorry that even with app and safari closed in the background it reaches and feels higher temperatures.
Thank you for comment.

Spain, Europe
While talking about TDPs, Watts and specs it’s cool -see what I did there?-, I think most are not taking into account an important factor, especially on a passive cooled device like the MBA. Ambient temperature.

Op, I don’t know where you live, but right now in many countries we are suffering high temperatures. Here in Spain we’re between 35°C and 40°C depending on the region. In some places of southern Spain they are reaching even 45°C during the day.

If you live in a place where it’s summer right now, and you don’t have air conditioning on your room, it’s not weird to have such temperatures.

Anyways, like I said previously, if you’re not happy with the device you should return it before the return window closes.

Yes you are right.

44-46C is nothing to be concerned about. Most systems can run between 80-90C without significant slowdowns, so there's more than enough thermal headroom left for you. Here's my temps running the M2 Max:

CPUs don’t run at 7 degrees unless you freeze your MacBook.
The app your using must have some bugs or the developer did a bad job.

my m2 air is about 45ºC average temp, with CPU usage around 15% in a room that is around 30ºC. It's fine imo. You should not be concerned until the CPU reaches above 100ºC and battery above 40ºC. Above those, it could damage/reduce the lifespan of the laptop. Under it's fine. Of course, the colder the better.

If you have a look at my Post #52 you can see that there are also 2 Sensors ( there are 4 but the List is not complete: Ta0D / Ta09 / TVM2 / TVM3 ) with a 7 Degree Celsius measuring.
The App @dmccloud is using either selects the Wrong Sensors or there are always some failing ones randomly.
Anyway the Programmer did a bad Job
I am using the free App Hot.

This is from my 15" MBA. The temporature hovers around 37C with bunch of apps running (Apple News, Chrome, Firefox, Outlook, MS teams, etc.). It's quite efficient. Even when playing 4K Youtube videos in Chrome, the CPU power consumption never went over 6w.

How many degrees should the m2 air be when it is running?
Is 44-46 degrees normal with everything turned off in the background?
Launch Activity Monitor
Then select Activity Monitor > Services > System Trace from the top menu
Record your activity for 10 seconds. Your Mac will then tell you whether it thinks your temperature is within Normal Range. If it is then crack on I guess. If not then take it back.

I like to run Coconut Battery on my laptops, displaying the power draw up on the menu bar next to the battery remaining time. It tends to put things in context and lets me know when something's amiss. I can also see the run time drop when the consumption goes up, and vice versa. Here's a pretty light load at ~50% screen brightness that yields me an estimated 11h on a 100% charge:

Screenshot 2023-07-17 at 4.34.15 PM.png

In general my M1 Air pulls 3-5 watts when doing easy office-y stuff with the screen brightness somewhere in the middle, gets up to 5-10 watts if I've got a lot going on. My 2020 Intel i5 Air would pull 10-15 watts, fans spinning, doing almost nothing (hence the rotten battery life it had).

Every other user has a different workflow, ambient temps, airflow, etc. than you do, and many have different MBAs (RAM, SSD).
Yup. My M1 MBP runs ~150 most of the time (real degrees :) ). I don't worry about it. My wife's air is roughly 50 cooler, but she's not driving an external monitor (let alone 3).

Apple names them notebooks not laptops for a reason - they all get hot under load.

37-40c is normal, but I'm also not getting 20% usage like you. If I saw a constant 20% use, I'd be searching for what's causing that.

Casual use for me is 5-10%. When it goes above 20%, 44 is not unusual. When I use 50%, I'll see 70º.

If it's uncomfortable to the touch, I'd suggest a plastic shell. I don't put it on my lap.

I’ve had the M1 Air and the M2 Air. The M2 is noticeably hotter. It’s my only complaint about the machine. Still, I like it overall better than the M1.

I understand that 44-46 degrees is normal for m2 air. It does not harm the laptop. But the temperature increase is a bad experience for the user.
M1 35 degrees.
M2 is an evolution of M1 with higher clock speeds & features, subsequently this results in a greater power draw by the SOC. Therefore by default the M2's will run hotter for the same loads. M3 will hopefully boost performance & lower operating temperature due to reduced lithography.

I still have an average of 33 degrees when having 25 degrees Room Temps......

MBA M2 16GB/1TB/10Core GPU......

As your MBA is New it may perform some more Tasks in the Background cause you have an average of 80% Unused CPU. The Temps look OK for 80% unused CPU/GPU.

I have also the MBA M2 in Clamshell mode and a Casing:

That's really impressive for such a thin/powerful and fanless laptop
remember that review about using a macbook in the freezer? Or that macbook crashing when plugged-in to an external monitor? (GPU overheat)
I am glad those days are over
