Buying a licence for Windows makes it one heck of an expensive game!

Not really, you can get a copy of Windows XP on eBay for around 60 bucks. Sure it would be preferable to get Windows 7, but, every game still runs on XP still as far as I know.

port them yourself using Wineskin :)

This is very easy to do.

Ya know I've never gotten Wineskin to get my games working properly.

I guess you get what you pay for though.

How dare you!

yep, its definitely for the more advanced level... I plan to try to make more user friendly methods, but there just so much I can do by myself. If I had a team dedicated to making wrappers for specific games that were well done and supported, it would be great, as people could just click the game they wanted to play and have it done for them instead of having to figure it all out themselves. Portingteam.com works in the way somewhat, since people who have a lot of experience putting together wrappers make and share wrappers that are ready to go, but its a pretty loose community, and not really super focused on anything.

Hey, don't contradict me!

depending on the user... it is very easy to very complicated. I cannot say its "easy" as some people have trouble just pointing and clicking... to some people it is very complicated.

I think that it would be hard to make the process any easier given the function of Wineskin. Porting games is not inherently easy. Wineskin make the process relatively easy.

Games that use Punkbuster don't work. It would be nice to get Punkbuster working with Wineskin. VAC works fine.

The Windows of version Steam runs really well. Many of the PC games in Steam work well too. I mostly play CS 1.6 just for nostalgia. CS 1.6 works great.

Maybe it would be easier if many of the commonly used Winetricks packages were preinstalled?

Any tips on getting America's Army 3 working?

Wineskin is for the more advanced Mac and Wine users. Just because it's easy for you, doesn't mean it is for everybody.

Even though I've had a lot of experience with Wine (used to be a full time Mandriva user) I found Wineskin to be very unintuitive, and sadly, I've only gotten one or two games to work. They only worked okay compared to Crossover as well.

Wineskin is a great idea. In fact, its probably the best idea for getting Windows games on the Mac, but fact is it doesn't work that great right now for most games.

While the same could be said of Crossover, at least Crossover has a huge amount of support and a large list of applications that just plain work. Install and done. Thats what I want, I don't want to spend 2 weeks figuring out why my game wont run with nothing but poor community support.

Sorry?

My post was mostly directed toward doh123 as a joke given that he is a developer for Wineskin which is supplied to the Mac community for FREE.

It was a subtle way of saying thank you.

How to play Smokin' Guns

1) Download the following:

http://download.hugelaser.com/download.php/smokin-guns.net/mac_version/Smokin_Guns_1.0.dmg

http://www.smokinguns.fr/download/SmokinGuns-1.1b4-update.zip

2) Find "smokinguns-mac-release-bin-app-ub.zip" in the "SmokinGuns-1.1b4-update" folder and unarchive the zip file to extract the app bundle for Macs. Move the app bundle to your Applications folder.

3) Show package contents of the "Smokin' Guns" app bundle located in the Smokin_Guns_1.0.dmg and navigate to "/Contents/MacOS/smokinguns." Copy all files located in that folder.

4) Show package contents of the "Smokin' Guns" app bundle located in your Applications folder and navigate to "/Contents/MacOS/smokinguns." Paste the previously copied contents into this "smokinguns" folder.

5) Open the "SmokinGuns-1.1b4-update" folder, navigate into the "smokinguns" folder, and copy all files located in that folder.

6) Repeat step 4. Select "replace all" when prompted after pasting the contents. Make sure to do steps 3-6 in order or problems may occur.

7) Launch the game by clicking the app bundle located in the "Smokin' Guns" folder.

You recover all that money and actually make less loss if you buy +15 games actually. Plus performance gain in Windows is priceless. Because Feral and Aspyr are selling their games for ripoff price, three games (e.g. Bioshock + Borderlands + Rome: Total War) already equal a Windows OEM licence, at least here in the UK. And you know what? You can probably get all three games on Windows for less price than a botched mac port.

To add to this revived thread may I recommend Nuclear Dawn through Steam.

While the play population is kinda small at the moment the deveopelers are still actively working on and improving the game. If you're chompping at the bit for Battlefield 3 but don't want to dual boot this is good replacement that tickles very similar play style. It doesn't have vehicles but the combination between RTS and FPS makes for very interesting (sometimes frustrating) games.

Nice list of games here. I have been downloading some of the free open source games and must say i'm very impressed. Been playing 2 of them in particular the last couple days. Urban Terror and Red Eclipse are both top notch online fps games. Are there any other really good one's i'm missing out on?
