Mac games are rubbish

I'd have trouble naming 10 games that are any good......Age of Empires 3, Call of Duty 2 and X3 stand out but these games are years behind the PC market.......and yes I could spend a lot of money buying the upgrades I would need to run Bootcamp, but then why buy a Mac in the first place?

Mac users are in denial - I keep hearing words like 'fun and cool stuff' being used in conjunction with Apple, but the elephant in the room is gaming, and I wish more people would come out and admit it!

a) Not everyone plays games

b) Not everyone enjoys PC gamings seeming requirement to update your graphics card every 18 months, and uses a console instead.

c) With regards to native OS X gaming, not everyone enjoys stating the obvious over and over :p.

Usually I try to be nice, here i will not be.

Mac Games don't have to be crap, but when you get Cider ports, it's worthless.

At least with some MacSoft or Aspyr games they can run half decent.
 
Well, that's a given, no one claimed games on a Mac were good. That's like saying an Aston Martin DB9 is a crap off road vehicle.

I find PC gaming irritating and fustrating. My PC was never quite up to it, however much I spent on it. Playing games was always laggy and irritating. I stopped PC gaming about 7 years ago as a result. Consoles are the way to go if you don't want to be buying £2-300 graphics cards every 6 months.

Which makes a Mac and a Wii/xbox/PS3 a perfect combination for me.

There's more to life than video games.

I personally enjoy playing games, but I don't like Windows (even though I run it to play a lot of games). When a game comes out for the Mac, if it's one I like I'll buy it. I don't need blistering-edge performance to enjoy something.

Also, the only thing you need to run with Boot Camp is a copy of Windows. That's it. No other upgrades required.
 
Why are you people bothering with this troll? It is quite obvious he doesn't want an intelligent discussion but wants to start a flame war.

Just ignore these people like this and move on.
 
I'm not trying to start any flame war - I am a genuine Mac owner, love my Mac in many ways but am frustrated by the lack of decent games. I know this is an old bugbear but you'd think after god knows how many years of complaining, something real would be done to address it.

As for Bootcamp......well, to run it I would need a copy of Leopard (£70), a copy of Windows SP2 (£60) , 2 GB of RAM (£40) as my system only has 512 Mb, plus installation costs.....so about £200.
 
PC for games Mac for everythig else

I agree with Maximus about the games but I would never give up my Mac. I run bootcamp and Vista for games and do everything else with OSX. As good as PCs are for games they don't come close to Mac in terms of stress free, pleasurable computing. In terms of money, I decided not to spend the money on an Xbox or PS3 and spent less on Vista.

Couldn't have said it better. I haven't gamed on a "PC" since the original Xbox came out. I now game on a Wii, PS3 and a 360. (Recently sold the 360 though). Heck, all 3 of these consoles cost me less than two graphics card updates.

If you say so, the first post just sounded awfully troll-like to me. Guess I've seen too many threads by anti-Mac folk.


Anyway, I'm not one of those Mac users that will deny there is a problem with Mac gaming, or the lack there-of. However, there are way more than 10 good games for the Mac. I know it is subjective to opinion, but there are more than that.

I think the simple truth is that Steve Jobs just really doesn't care about pushing games on the Mac itself. I know he has "claimed" it in keynotes and stuff, but I don't buy it. If anything, bootcamp was his "solution".

There is a problem with Mac gaming from both Apple and developers side, and I'm not holding my breath for a solution.


Anyway, gaming isn't the only reason to own a Mac and anyone would be insane to make that the reason. The operating system, support, reliability and lack of headaches is why I own Macs.

Warcraft
Warcraft II (and expansion pack)
Warcraft III (and expansion pack)
Starcraft (and expansion pack)
Diablo
Diablo II (and expansion pack)
World of Warcraft (and expansion pack)
Escape Velocity series (especially EV: Nova)
Marathon
Marathon: Durandel
Marathon: Infinity

And I could even go on.

Now, that's 11 games, none of which were released after PC versions

And I'm not counting the expansion packs as separate games.
And we could always talk about vintage games like Crystal Quest lol.

You do realize that the first intel macs (all capable of running boot camp) were released OVER TOO YEARS AGO. If you bought a PC more than 2 years ago you'd certainly have trouble playing many of today's games anyway.

Now, I would certainly love for more games to come to Mac... but i have answered your question... and you lose :p

Redsteven......I never intended this to be a competition, however you have just proved my point with this list! Most of those games are years old, I don't doubt there are some very good ones, but (with the exception of WoW) they are up to 10 years old! The point is that there are very few modern games ported for the Mac.....where is Bioshock, Oblivion, Call of Duty 4, Assassin's Creed, Gears of War, HL2.....?

These are all games I was looking forward to playing.....although there are rumours of Gears of War getting a port?

I downloaded Roller Coaster tycoon 3 for OS X... it sucked. I bought it for PC, it kicked butt. even when there is a mac port, gaming on the mac sucks.

If you are so worried about the financial aspect of gaming on PC/Mac then you clearly have no right to complain about the lack of gaming on the Mac. You think the choices are sparse? Try gaming on the PC with a just-released game when your graphics card is only 2 years old. Yeah, it will run, but it's the not how the game was intended to be.

Gaming on the PC sucks unless you are willing to spend (and invest) every single year in upgrades. That's why I left it and got a 360. Personally, I have more important things to think about than the next great video card.

And if money isn't an issue...get yourself a PC!

I never played Crystal Quest, but I played the re-make Crystal Crazy. I never beat it, but I got to the last level. Then we replaced our computer and I never played it again. But I still remember playing it sometimes, it was an awesome game.

As for gaming...I keep the first person shooters and strategy games on the computer usually, and racing games on the consoles. Though I did just get colin mcrae rally mac, and must say it is pretty good, even though racing with a keyboard sucks. I will agree with Maximus that there are not alot of breaking edge mac games out there, and I am pretty disappointed in Epic after announcing that UT3 and GOW would come to mac, and we still haven't seen anything. As well as EA who announced last summer all new games would be simultaneous releases, which we also haven't seen.
But Blizzard has always simultaneous releases, and they make alot of good games. I will probably get Tomb Raider: Anniversary from Feral too, as I played the demo and it is awesome, and Colin Mcrae from them runs so well. Then we have Spore coming out this fall, and probably Starcraft 2, maybe we will see GOW and UT3 finally this fall as well, and of course Quake Territories.
I just ordered a couple days ago Drop Point Alaska. I have been thinking of getting NFS Carbon or GH3, or maybe Battlefield 2142, and maybe even Sims 2. I will probably get COD4 when it comes out in a couple months, and I might look into NWN2. Also there are those games that have been out for a while that I should get someday, like UT2004, Prey, Doom 3, Quake 4, Civ4, Lego Star Wars 2, any of the old Blizzard games, currently I just have Starcraft and Warcraft3.

Oh wait. I guess there are some good games for the mac after all, and nothing but many many more to come from here on out.:apple:
 
Hi, yeah...clearly you didn't get the memo...We all accepted a long time ago that Mac games lag behind their PC brethren. I'd wager that Mac users who game do so through boot camp, a pc, or a console. We've known for ages that apple isn't interested in the gaming segment aside from very mainstream products. The biggest thing to happen in terms of apple promoting games in the last few years was Jobs running WoW during a keynote while talking about Spaces (WoW crashed during the demo btw).

Many of the other MR members and I feel that it makes far more financial sense to game on a console. The 360 or PS3 brings the latest and greatest titles for years with little or no need to upgrade hardware along with solid online multiplayer options.

PS: Your lack of RAM, Leopard, and a copy of XP is hardly Apple's problem. Your rig is your investment and responsibility. If you don't want to pay the cash to upgrade your RAM and other system components to levels that would be required to current play games on a Mac or even a PC then why are you complaining about a lack of software that you wouldn't even be able to run?

I admit that there aren't the latest and greatest games on it but we are getting UTIII and gears within a couple months. Also you said call of duty 2 was one of the games that stand out and I completely agree and call of duty 4 is coming out in may so you may be interested in that.

I can list a few Mac games that are fun:

1. SimCity 4
2. The Sims 2
3. Civilization IV (even more fun with Warlords expansion)
4. Star Wars: Empire at War
5. The Movies
6. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
7. Star Wars: Jedi Academy

All those games run on Intel Macs out of the box or with a small update. And these are only the games that I've played.

I'd also add Tomb Raider: Anniversary to the list, but I haven't played the full game yet, only the demo.

Edit:

And how could I forget the non-mainstream titles such as;
8. Escape Velocity: Nova
9. Wingnuts 2
10. Tiki Magic Mini Golf


There, 10 fun games for the Mac.
 
OK guys I appreciate some of your comments - and yes I am aware the 512 Mb is a big problem, I am going to upgrade to 2Gb as soon as possible. And thanks too for some of the lists of games - I will try some of them out.

Obviously if money was no object I would have bought a PS3 and/or Xbox 360 a long time ago, along wth a 40 inch + flatscreen HD TV to play the games on......however for the next couple of years I am going to be on a tight budget!

I know this isn't Apple's fault, and I have been at pains to point out that I love my Mac in many other ways.......but given that so many people are switching to Macs, I thought games designers at least would realise the potential of creating Mac versions of the best games.
