.Mac is it really worth it?

I'm looking at purchasing .Mac in the near future. Is it really worth it or is there another alternative that is comparable?

What aspects are you thinking of getting it for? I lie it because it keeps my two Macs synchronised. There are cheaper alternatives that will give you more online space but .Mac is quite nicely integrated into OSX IMO.

Keeps all my info the same on all three machines.

Nice for posting calendars, pics and other stuff, too.

$8 is a cheap price to pay for me to keep everything synced.

One thing I noticed the other day is the new .mac alias's... So in theory we can get more email addresses that are automatically forwarded onto our main .mac account.

It is also useful for the smooth Backup software program they offer; I use that every day to keep my machine backed up.

I just got my powerbook and i was hoping there was a way to share the computers physically ie. firewire cable syncing the two machines..

just bought a new license on ebay for $45. i've been doing this the last couple of years...$99/year is a bit steep, i feel better with about 1/2 that. still, it's getting better.

I don't know why I didn't think of that. I never would've thought you could buy .Mac on eBay. I love it. I'm bidding now. What a great concept. I could pay half for it. I've gone back and forth on getting one, but now will try to do it through eBay.

do a search in the fourms for .Mac and you will find dozens of similar threads. Basically if you want cheap and have extra time and are willing to learn (or already know) quite a bit about technology you can do most of the same for cheaper, but if you want easy, somewhat cheap, and integrated then go .Mac. I have three macs synced through iCal, use backup, have home pages and use it for many email aliases so I love it. But really, do a search if you need more reasons- there are many others. Unfortunately they have stopped most of the freebe perks they used to do like free prints, software, etc. They have some but not as much.

But I am still hooked on it as it is simple to use everything!

Question is. It seems unclear about how much space there is to host a web page. Anyone know how much there is?

You can set it at what you want between email/iDisk i think. Then just use how much you have on your iDisk

Once I have my .mac account the url will looks somehting like 'web.mac.com/whatever name I choose' correct? If I went and bought one of those $1.99 domain names from godaddy or some similar service could I use my .mac to host and have it linked to a 'www.whatever name I choose.com'?

I think it's going to be your .mac account name. At least that's the way it is with my iWeb site that I started putting together a couple of days ago.

Depends on how experienced you are... I personally have all my important data in CVS, and all my mail on GMail. For $8/month you can get a full virtual linux host with root access, and way more storage.

But you'd have to do all the integration yourself, while .mac just simply works out of the box.

I'm thinking about getting a .mac membership but can't find an answer to this question on their web site. Is one membership per family sufficient. If I buy a membership, can both my wife and I use it? We want to be able to communicate with each other via our isight cameras when one of us is out of town. Will that work with one account?

You do not need a paid .mac account to use ichat. Just a .mac or .aol address I think. Just both sing up for trails or something.

It is nice to have for backups and especially for use with Iweb. i really like Iweb and it is easy to publish to .MAC
Some day I hope to get a domain and try to use Iweb and even branch out into other web development programs.
But for now it suits my needs perfectly.

Not to mention that at work my mac mail is the only email program that can be accessed for our work computers. All of the other email clients are blocked. Our IT adminstrator is obviously not a Mac guy or he would have blocked that too.
